How to Adjust and replace Brake Shoes on Kia Sportage?

Adjustment



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4. Apply the parking brake.
  5. Remove the 4 attaching nuts.
  6. Release the parking brake and remove the brake drum.
  7. Using a brake caliper, measure the brake shoe diameter at the widest point.
  8. Using a brake caliper, measure the brake drum diameter at the widest point.
  9. Calculate the clearance by subtracting the shoe diameter from the drum diameter. The shoe-to-drum clearance should be 0.020 - 0.040 inch
  10. Adjust the shoe-to-drum clearance by turning the star wheel on the adjusting assembly until proper clearance is achieved.
  11. Install the brake drum.
  12. Apply the parking brake and install the four drum retaining nuts.
  13. Release the parking brake.
  14. Install the rear wheels.
  15. Lower the vehicle.

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the rear wheels.
  3. Apply the parking brake.
  4. Remove the 4 attaching nuts.
  5. Release the parking brake and remove the brake drum.
  6. Remove the spring from the secondary shoe to the adjusting lever.
  7. Remove the adjusting lever.
  8. Remove the return spring above the star adjusting wheel.
  9. Turn the starwheel clockwise to relieve tension on the brake shoes.
  10. Remove the starwheel.
  11. Remove the hold-down pin clips.
  12. Remove the primary shoe.
  13. Disconnect the C-clip and pin attaching the parking brake lever to the secondary brake shoe.
To install:
  1. Lubricate the backing plate contact points.
  2. Connect the parking brake lever to the secondary brake shoe.
  3. Attach the primary and secondary brake shoes to the backing plate.
  4. Install the starwheel.
  5. Install the return spring above the starwheel.
  6. Install the adjusting lever.
  7. Install the spring from the secondary shoe to the adjusting lever. Be sure the lever contacts the starwheel.
  8. Install the brake drum and retaining nuts.
  9. Adjust the rear brakes through the slot in the rear of the backing plate.
  10. Install the wheels. Tighten the wheel lugs to 77 ft. lbs. (99 Nm).
  11. Lower the vehicle.

Sportage
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the rear wheels.
  3. Apply the parking brake.
  4. Remove the 4 attaching nuts.
  5. Release the parking brake and remove the brake drum.
  6. Remove the spring from the secondary shoe to the adjusting lever.
  7. Remove the adjusting lever.
  8. Remove the return spring above the star adjusting wheel.
  9. Turn the starwheel clockwise to relieve tension on the brake shoes.
  10. Remove the starwheel.
  11. Remove the hold-down pin clips.
  12. Remove the primary shoe.
  13. Disconnect the C-clip and pin attaching the parking brake lever to the secondary brake shoe.
To install:

  2. Connect the parking brake lever to the secondary brake shoe.
