BUZZING NOISE FROM FRONT OF VEHICLE, UNDER HOOD, WHICH IS PROGRESSIVELY GETTING LOUDER. THE BUZZING SOUNDS LIKE AN EXHAUST LEAK.Most likely just a Exhaust heat shield that came loose. This could have easily happened when working on the transmission.
Your symptoms do sound consistent with a bearing noise.. either a wheel bearing or the axle support bearing. I've run into these before that with the wheels off of the ground was impossible to find the culprit and that it needed the weight of the car on the wheels in order to make the noise.
It may come down to just replacing parts and hoping for the best. Have some new bearings pressed into the front knuckles and see what happens!
The only other solution I can offer is to find a repair shop that has a "Chassis-Ears" diagnostic tool. This tool uses a pair of headphones and several wireless 'clip on' microphones. They can clip the mics at various points of the car and then switch between them while driving the vehicle to determine where the noise is coming from.
The drawback is that this equipment is costly, and the shop will charge you up to a couple hundred dollars in diagnostic time for this procedure can be time consuming due to its trial-and-error nature.
Another option may be to find someone with a rolling dyno that will allow the car to be operated on its wheels while sitting still, but again this may be cost prohibitive.
