Timing Chain Cover, Seal, Chain and Sprockets

Removal & Installation



M54 & S54 Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The timing case cover can be removed without removing the water pump.


    NOTE
    The reversing roller can only be replaced complete with bearings.



    Negative battery cable
    Radiator and fan assembly
    Drive belts and any accessories that block access to the timing cover
    Engine splash shield
    Vibration damper using a suitable tool, then remove the central bolt and remove the vibration damper hub
    Timing case cover bolts and timing cover



    Upper chain guide and top bolt on the right chain guide
    Timing chain sprockets and the lift out the chain
    Timing chain guide
    Tensioning rail, if necessary.
    Crankshaft sprocket with a suitable tool and lift out the Woodruff key
    Reversing roller, if needed


To install:

  1. Install the Woodruff key into the channel in the crankshaft. Slide the crankshaft sprocket over the end of the crankshaft with the Woodruff key aligning with the channel in the crankshaft. Use the central mounting bolt to draw the sprocket entirely into position.
  2. Apply sealant at the intersections of the timing cover and the oil pan.
  3. The remaining components are installed in the reverse order from which they were removed.
  4. Tighten the remaining fasteners as follows:

    Camshaft sprocket bolts: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
    Timing cover M6 bolts: 78-96 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm)
    Timing cover M8 bolts: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
    Vibration damper central bolt: M44 engines: 243 ft. lbs. (330 Nm)
    Vibration damper central bolt: M52 and S52 engines: 302 ft. lbs. (410 Nm)
    Vibration damper pulley bolts: 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm)

  5. Connect the negative battery cable.

M62 Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Accessory drive belt
    front engine splash shield
    Left cylinder head cover
    Alternator
    Oil filter housing
    Left upper timing cover
    Right cylinder head cover
    Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
    Timing chain tensioner and mount
    Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor
    Oil dipstick tube
    Right timing cover
    Engine cooling fan
    Water pump pulley
    Crankshaft damper pulley and hub
    Front crankshaft seal using tool No. 11-2-380 and 11-2-383
    Lower timing cover

  3. Turn the engine in the direction of rotation and set cylinder number 1 to TDC firing. The arrows on the sprockets should face up in the cylinder axis. Use a crankshaft holder to keep the TDC position.
  4. Loosen and remove the camshaft sprocket bolts from both banks of cylinders. Compress the hydraulic tensioning element to loosen the timing chain. Lock the element with tool No. 11-3-420, or equivalent and remove the sprockets with the chain. Do not rotate the engine with the timing chain removed.
  5. Guide the chain out of the tensioner rails and off the lower sprocket.
  6. To remove the guide rail:
    1. On the left side (cylinder bank 1-4), remove the lower mounting bolt and remove the tensioning rail. Remove the spacer for the tensioning rail.
    2. On the left side, remove the 2 mounting bolts for the guide rail. Do not mix the 2 bolts, it is important to install the same bolt in the same hole. Remove the sliding rail.
    3. On the right side (cylinder bank 5-8), remove the 2 mounting bolts on the tensioning rail, and the 2 bolts on the guide rail. Remove the rails.


To install:

  1. On the right cylinder bank, position the guide rail and install the mounting bolts. Position the tensioning rail, and install the mounting bolts.
  2. On the left cylinder bank, check the seal for the spacer. Position the guide rail, and install the mounting bolts in the correct holes. Install the spacer. Position the tensioning rail, and install the lower mounting bolt.
  3. Inspect the sprockets for wear and replace if necessary.
  4. Install the chain in position.
  5. Be sure No. 1 piston remains at the TDC on the firing stroke and the key on the crankshaft is in the 12 o'clock position.
  6. Position the chain on the guide rail and swing the chain inward and to the left.
  7. Engage the chain on the crankshaft gear and install the camshaft sprockets into the chain.
  8. The sprocket, on the intake camshaft for cylinder bank 1-4, has a sender pin. With the arrow pointing up, align the pin in the middle of the slots, then install the camshaft sprockets. Remove tool No. 11-3-420 and remove the crankshaft holder.
  9. Install the chain tensioner piston, spring and cap plug, but do not tighten.
  10. To bleed the chain tensioner, fill the oil pocket located on the upper timing housing cover with engine oil and move the tensioner back and forth with a suitable pry tool until oil is expelled at the cap plug, then tighten the cap plug securely.
  11. Check for the correct seating of the dowel sleeves. Clean the sealing surfaces thoroughly, then place a new gasket on the lower cover.
  12. Trim the protruding ends of the gasket, making sure the cutting tool is level. Do not allow the pieces to fall into the engine.
  13. Position the lower cover and install the mounting bolts with an even distribution of pressure. Tighten the 6mm bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm), 8mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) and 10mm bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
  14. Install the oil seal in the timing case cover using tool No. 11 1 220 or an equivalent seal driver. Make sure the seal is flush with the cover.
  15. Install the vibration damper hub and install the mounting bolt. Tighten the hub bolt as follows:
    1. Step 1: 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
    2. Step 2: Plus 60 degrees.
    3. Step 3: Plus 60 degrees.
    4. Step 4: Plus 30 degrees.

  16. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Install the cooling air guide for the alternator, located on the engine carrier. Install the front engine splash shield and lower the vehicle.
  17. Position the vibration damper pulleys and install the mounting bolts for the damper.
  18. Install the pulley on the water pump.
  19. Install the drive belt and the cooling fan. Rotate the fan counterclockwise to install.
  20. Install the intake hose between the throttle body and the air volume meter, then install the manifold cover.
  21. Replace the hydraulic tensioner oil seal in the timing case cover.
  22. Check for the correct seating of the dowel sleeves. Clean the sealing surfaces to remove any oil or old gasket material and install a new gasket.
  23. Mount the timing case cover. Screw in the vertically mounted bolts until the cover contacts the cylinder head. Do not fully tighten the bolts.
  24. Install the horizontally mounted bolts, then tighten the vertically mounted bolts in 2 steps. After the vertically mounted bolts have been tightened, torque the horizontally mounted bolts in 2 steps to a final torque as follows:

    M6 bolts: 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
    M8 bolts: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
    M10 bolts: 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)

  25. Install the oil dipstick guide tube, making sure to replace and lubricate the O-ring.
  26. Install the camshaft sender fastener and the chain tensioner.
  27. Install the air cleaner upper section along with the MAF sensor.
  28. Install the right cylinder head cover.
  29. Check for the correct seating of the dowel sleeves. Clean the sealing surfaces to remove any oil or old gasket material and install a new gasket.
  30. Mount the timing case cover together with the inserted bolt. This bolt cannot be installed with the cover in place. Install the rest of the mounting bolts and fasten the vertically mounted bolts until the cover just contacts the cylinder head. Do not fully tighten the bolts.
  31. Install the horizontally mounted bolts, then tighten the vertically mounted bolts in 2 steps. After the vertically mounted bolts have been tightened, torque the horizontally mounted bolts in 2 steps to a final torque as follows: M6 bolts: 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm), M8 bolts: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm), M10 bolts: 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
  32. Install or connect the following:

    Battery positive cable for the alternator and install the protective tube mounting fasteners and connect the remaining wires to the alternator
    Oil filter housing and the return pipe and replace the housing cover
    Alternator and cylinder head cover
    Negative battery cable
