Oldsmobile aurora power steering rack and pinion?

Basicly the system is set up something like this :

There is a pump,,the purpose of the pump is to move power steering fluid from a resevoir to the rack and pinion steering system under pressure.

The power steering fluid returns from the rack and pinion and drains back into the resevoir,,getting ready for its return trip to the power steering pump and then to the rack and pinion once again.
There are 2 main parts in a rack and pinion system,,,,the rack and the pinion.
The rack is like a piece of pipe with notches cut into it from one end to the other and the pinion is like a gear with teeth,,now the teeth of the pinion fit into the notches of the rack and when you turn the steering wheel the pinion turns and the rack can move from one end to the other.
Now in the rack and pinion system there are valves,,seals,,washers,,clips, bearings and other mechanical things.
There is quite a number of parts,,,and even though a rack and pinion system can be rebuilt by a general mechanic in a shop.-----------------

Removal & Installation


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
    CAUTION
    Make sure the wheels of the vehicle are straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the coil assembly in the steering column to become uncentered which will cause damage to the coil assembly.

  2. Lock the steering column by installing the Steering Column Anti Rotation Pin tool J 42640 into the underside of the steering column.
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Intermediate shaft lower coupling
    Outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle
    Pressure and return pipes from the rack and pinion gear
    Electrical connector, if equipped
    Stabilizer shaft links at lower control arms

  5. Rotate the stabilizer shaft to access steering gear bolts.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Rack and pinion assembly and tighten the bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)
    Electrical connector, if equipped
    Pressure and return lines to the steering gear and tighten the fittings to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm)
    Heat shield and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 N)

  2. Align stabilizer shaft.

    Links to lower control arms
    Tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Torque the castle nuts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
    Intermediate shaft to the steering gear and tighten the pinch bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)

  3. Remove the steering column anti rotation pin from the steering column.
  4. Fill and bleed the power steering system.

Bleeding


  1. Use clean, new power steering fluid type only.
  2. Hoses touching the frame, body or engine may cause system noise. Verify that the hoses do not touch any other part of the vehicle.
  3. Loose connections may not leak, but could allow air into the steering system. Verify that all hose connections are tight.
    NOTE
    Power steering fluid level must be maintained throughout bleed procedure.

  4. Fill pump reservoir with fluid to minimum system level, FULL COLD level, or middle of hash mark on cap stick fluid level indicator.
    NOTE
    With hydro-boost only, the oil level will appear falsely high if the hydro-boost accumulator is not fully charged. Do not apply the brake pedal with the engine OFF. This will discharge the hydro-boost accumulator.

  5. If equipped with hydro-boost, fully charge the hydro-boost accumulator using the following procedure:
    1. Start the engine.
    2. Firmly apply the brake pedal 10-15 times.
    3. Turn the engine OFF.

  6. Raise the vehicle until the front wheels are off the ground.
  7. Key on engine OFF, turn the steering wheel from stop to stop 12 times. Vehicles equipped with hydro-boost systems or longer length power steering hoses may require turns up to 15 to 20 stop to stops.
  8. Verify power steering fluid level per operating specification.
  9. Start the engine. Rotate steering wheel from left to right. Check for sign of cavitation or fluid aeration (pump noise/whining).
  10. Verify the fluid level. Repeat the bleed procedure if necessary.

Removal & Installation


3.5L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
    NOTE
    Always turn the ignition OFF when connecting or disconnecting battery cables, battery chargers, or jumper cables. Failing to do so may damage the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or other electronic components.


    NOTE
    The battery is located beneath the rear seat cushion.

  3. Place a drain pan under the vehicle.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Fuel injector site shield
    Power steering pump pulley from the power steering pump
    Power steering pump pressure hose from the power steering pump
    Power steering pump return hose from the power steering pump
    Power steering pump mounting bolts
    Power steering pump
    Power steering pump reservoir from the power steering pump

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering pump reservoir to the power steering pump
    Power steering pump to the vehicle and tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
    Power steering pump return hose to the power steering pump
    Power steering pump pressure hose to the power steering pump and tighten the hose to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
    Power steering pump pulley to the power steering pump
    Fuel injector site shield

  2. Bleed the power steering system.
  3. Inspect the power steering system for leaks.

4.0L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
    NOTE
    Always turn the ignition OFF when connecting or disconnecting battery cables, battery chargers, or jumper cables. Failing to do so may damage the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or other electronic components.


    NOTE
    The battery is located beneath the rear seat cushion.

  3. Place a drain pan under the vehicle.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Accessory drive belt
    Power steering pressure line from the power steering pump
    Power steering return hose from the power steering pump
    Power steering pump bracket mounting bolt
    Power steering pump assembly
    Power steering pulley from the power steering pump
    Power steering pump reservoir from the power steering pump

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering pump reservoir to the power steering pump
    Power steering pulley to the power steering pump
    Power steering pump to the vehicle and tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
    Power steering return hose to the power steering pump and tighten the hose to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
    Power steering pump pulley to the power steering pump
    Accessory drive belt to the pump

  2. Bleed the power steering system.
  3. Inspect the power steering system for leaks.
  4. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle.
  5. Reconnect the negative battery cable and reinstall the rear seat cushion.

Removal & Installation


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
    NOTE
    Always turn the ignition OFF when connecting or disconnecting battery cables, battery chargers, or jumper cables. Failing to do so may damage the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or other electronic components.


    NOTE
    The battery is located beneath the rear seat cushion.

  3. Disable the SRS system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Note the mark on the steering shaft and the steering wheel in order to ensure proper alignment during installation.



    Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module
    Steering wheel mass damper retaining screws
    Mass damper from the steering wheel
    Steering wheel retaining nut

  5. Remove the steering wheel using special tools J 42578 and the J 1859-A or a suitable steering wheel press.

To install:

  1. Route the wiring through the steering wheel.
  2. Align the mark on the steering wheel with the mark on the shaft.
  3. Install the steering wheel and tighten the nut to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm)
  4. Install the mass damper and tighten the screws to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm)
  5. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module.
  6. Enable the SIR system.
