Timing Belt and Sprockets
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
1C-LTC and 2CL-TC Engines
See Figures 1 and 2
- Remove the right hand front wheel.
- Remove the fender apron seal.
- Remove the windshield washer and radiator reservoir tanks.
- Disconnect and label all vacuum hoses, cables, electrical wiring and remove the cruise control actuator and bracket.
- Remove the power steering pump with bracket.
- Remove the alternator and alternator bracket.
- Undo the three clips, remove the five bolts and remove the upper (No. 2) timing belt cover and gasket.
- Align the line mark of the camshaft pulley with the top end of the cylinder head by turning the crankshaft pulley bolt CLOCKWISE.
- Using a spanner wrench to hold the crankshaft pulley stationary, remove the pulley set bolt and plate washer.
- Remove the five bolts and remove the No. 1 timing belt cover and gasket.
- Using a small prybar or similar tool, remove the tension spring. The use of any tool that will pinch the spring is not recommended.
- Loosen the No. 1 idler pulley mounting bolt.
If the timing belt is to be reused, draw a directional arrow on the belt in the direction of normal engine rotation and place match marks on the belt and the camshaft, crankshaft and injection pump pulleys.
- Remove the timing belt.
- Using a spanner wrench to hold the camshaft pulley, remove the setbolt.
- Install a two-armed pulled and remove the camshaft pulley. Be careful, the pulley may spring off so don't drop it!
- Remove the No. 1 idler pulley.
- Using a spanner wrench to hold the injection pump drive pulley, remove the setbolt. Install a two-armed pulled and remove the drive pulley. Be careful, the pulley may spring off so don't drop it!
- Remove the No. 2 idler pulley.
- Using a gear pulled, remove the crankshaft timing pulley.
- Using a driver and hammer, carefully drive the crankshaft timing pulley into position.
- Install the No. 2 idler pulley, tighten the bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
- Slide the injection pump drive pulley over the pump key and tighten the bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm). Do not use an impact wrench.
- Install the No. 1 idler pulley and finger tighten the mount bolt to the extent that the idler pulley is free. Install the pulley guide bolt, then tighten the bolt to 65 inch lbs. (7 Nm). Be sure the idler pulley bracket can move left to right by hand.
- Align the camshaft knockpin with the camshaft timing pulley and slide the pulley onto the shaft. Install the setbolt and plate washer and tighten it to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
The engine should be completely cold prior to timing belt installation.
- Align the mark of the camshaft pulley with the top end of the cylinder head. DO NOT align the cylinder head cover with the boss.
- Align the grooves of the crankshaft timing pulley and the oil pump.
- Align the cavity of the injection pump drive pulley with the line mark on the water pump.
Hold the injection pump drive pulley in place until the timing belt is completely installed.
- Install the timing belt onto the camshaft pulley.
If the OLD timing belt is being installed make sure the direction arrow is facing in the direction of engine rotation an that the match marks made on the belt and timing pulleys are properly aligned. If a NEW belt is being installed, install the belt so that the numbers and letters can be read from the rear end of the engine.
- Hold the injection pump pulley still with a wrench and install the timing belt onto the pulley. The timing belt should be evenly meshed with the pulley and should not be loose.
- Install the timing belt onto the water pump and crankshaft pulleys. The timing belt should be evenly meshed with the pulley and should not be loose.
- Install the timing belt onto the No. 2 idler and oil pump pulleys. The timing belt should be evenly meshed with the pulley and should not be loose. Be sure the belt is not twisted or too tight.
- Install the tension spring. Do not pinch the tension spring with pliers.
- Turn the crankshaft CLOCKWISE two complete revolutions from TDC to TDC.
- Visually check that each pulley is aligned with its timing mark. If the marks do not align, remove the belt and reinstall it.
- Tighten the No. 1 idler pulley set bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm). DO NOT move the idler pulley bracket while tightening the set bolt.
- Install the right hand engine mounting bracket with the retaining bolts. Tighten the 10mm bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm) and the 12mm bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm). If the vehicle is equipped with power steering and/or air conditioning, do not install the 12mm bolts.
- Install the right hand mounting insulator.
- Lower the engine.
- Install the timing belt guide. Make sure that the cup is facing outward.
- Install the upper (No. 1) timing belt cover with the new gasket. Install and tighten the five bolts.
- Drive the crankshaft pulley onto the crankshaft.
- Hold the crankshaft pulley stationary with the same tool used during removal and install the set bolt and plate washer. Tighten the set bolt to 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm).
- Install the lower timing belt cover and new gasket with the three clips and five bolts.
- Install the alternator and alternator bracket. Adjust the belt tension.
- Install the power steering pump and adjust the drive belt tension.
- Install the cruise control actuator and bracket. Connect the harness, cables and vacuum hoses.
- Check and adjust the injection timing.
- Install the fender apron seal.
- Install the right front wheel.
- Check and adjust the engine idle and maximum speeds.
- Remove the timing belt covers as previously detailed.
- Raise the engine just enough to remove the weight from the engine mount on the right side.
- Remove the thru-bolt, two nuts, and right hand mounting insulator.
- Remove the retaining bolts and remove the right hand mounting bracket (from the side the alternator was removed from).
- Remove the timing belt and timing belt guide. If the timing belt is to be reused, draw a directional arrow on the timing belt in the direction of engine rotation (clockwise) and place matchmarks on the timing belt and crankshaft gear.
- Remove the bolt retaining the No. 1 idler pulley and tension spring.
- Remove the No. 2 idler pulley.
- Remove the crankshaft timing gear , if it can not be removed by hand, use two flat bladed tools to pry it off. Make sure to position shop rags to prevent damages to the components.
- Remove the nut retaining the oil pump pulley.
- Align the cutouts of the oil pump pulley and shaft, and slide the pulley on. Retain the pulley while tightening the nut to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
- Align the crankshaft timing pulley set key with the key groove of the crankshaft pulley, then slide the pulley on.
- Install the No. 2 idler pulley with the bolt and tighten to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm). Be sure the pulley moves smoothly.
Remove any oil or water on the idler pulley and keep it clean.
- Temporarily install the No. 1 idler pulley with the retaining bolt. Hint: use a 1.65 inch (42mm) bolt in length. Do not tighten the bolt yet. Install the tension spring. Pry the pulley toward the left as far as it will go, then tighten the bolt.
- Turn the crankshaft until the key groove in the crankshaft timing pulley is facing upward. Install the timing belt on the crankshaft timing, oil pump, No. 2 idler and water pump pulleys.
If the old timing belt is being reinstalled, make sure the directional arrow is facing in the original direction and that the belt and crankshaft gear matchmarks are properly aligned.
- Install the lower (No. 1) timing belt cover and new gasket with the four bolts.
- Align the crankshaft pulley set key with the pulley key groove. Install the pulley. Tighten the pulley bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
- On 2S-ELC engines, turn the crankshaft pulley and align the 0 mark on the lower (No. 1) timing belt cover.
- Align the camshaft knock pin with the matchmarks on the oil seal retainer.
- On 2S-ELC/USA engines, align the knock pin with the pin hole on the timing pulley E mark side. On 2S-ELC/Canadian engines, align the knock pin with the pin hole on the timing pulley. On 3S-FE and 5S-FE engines, align the knock pin with the groove of the pulley, and slide the pulley onto the camshaft with the plate washer and set bolt.
On 2S-ELC engines, make sure that the Matchmark on the oil seal retainer and center hole of the small hole on the camshaft timing pulley are aligned.
- Using the removal tool to hold the pulley stationary, install and tighten the pulley set bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) on the 2S-ELC and the 3S-FE. On the 5S-FE, tighten the set bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
- On 3S-FE and 5S-FE engines, turn the crankshaft pulley and align the 0mark on the lower (No. 1) timing belt cover.
- Install the timing belt and check the valve timing as follows:
- Align the matchmarks that you made previously, and install the timing belt onto the camshaft pulley.
- Loosen the No. 1 idler pulley set bolt 1 / 2 turn.
- Turn the crankshaft pulley two complete revolutions TDC to TDC. ALWAYS turn the crankshaft CLOCKWISE. Check that the pulleys are still in alignment with the timing marks.
- Tighten the No. 1 idler pulley set bolt to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
- Make sure there is belt tension between the crankshaft and camshaft timing pulleys.
- Install the upper (No. 2) timing cover with a new gasket(s). On the 5S-FE, align the two clamps for the engine wiring harness with the cover mounting bolts.
- Install the spark plugs.
- Install the right mounting insulator with bracket. Tighten the bracket bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm), insulator nuts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm) and thru-bolt to 52 ft. lbs. (71 Nm). On the 5S-FE, install the No. 2 engine mount bracket and tighten to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm); install the control rod and tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
- Lower the engine.
- On 3S-FE and 5S-FE engines, install the alternator and alternator bracket. On 2S-ELC engines, install the power steering reservoir tank.
- Install the drive belt and adjust the tension.
- Install the cruise control actuator with bracket.
- Install the fender apron seal and right engine under cover.
- Install the right front wheel.

- Remove the upper and lower timing belt covers as previously detailed.
- Remove the timing belt guide.
- Remove the timing belt.
If the timing belt is to be reused, draw a directional arrow on the timing belt in the direction of engine rotation (clockwise) and place matchmarks on the timing belt and crankshaft gear to match the drilled mark on the pulley.
- With a 10mm hex wrench, remove the setbolt, plate washer and the No. 1 idler pulley.
- Remove the crankshaft timing pulley, if it can not be removed by hand, use two flat bladed tools. Position shop rags on the components to prevent damage.
- Turn the crankshaft until the key groove in the crankshaft timing pulley is facing upward. Slide the timing pulley on so that the flange side faces inward.
- Apply bolt adhesive to the first few threads of the No. 1 idler pulley setbolt, install the plate washer and pulley and then tighten the bolt to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
- Install the timing belt on the crankshaft timing, No. 1 idler and water pump pulleys.
If the old timing belt is being reinstalled, make sure the directional arrow is facing in the original direction and that the belt and crankshaft gear matchmarks are properly aligned.
- Install the lower (No. 1) timing cover and tighten the bolts.
- Align the crankshaft pulley set key with the key groove on the pulley and slide the pulley on. Tighten the bolt to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm).
- Install the No. 2 idler pulley and tighten the bolt to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm). Check that the pulley moves smoothly.
- Slide the left pulley, facing the flange side outward. Align the knock pin hole of the camshaft with the knockpin of the timing pulley, then install the knock pin. Tighten the left camshaft timing pulley bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
- Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC again. Turn the right camshaft until the knock pin hole is aligned with the timing mark on the No. 3 belt cover. Turn the left pulley until the marks on the pulley are aligned with the mark on the No. 3 timing cover.
- Check that the mark on the belt matches with the edge of the lower cover. If not, shift it on the crank pulley until it does. Turn the left pulley clockwise a bit and align the mark on the timing belt with the timing mark on the pulley. Slide the belt over the left pulley. Now move the pulley until the marks on it align with the one on the No. 3 cover. There should be tension on the belt between the crankshaft pulley and the left camshaft pulley.
- Align the installation mark on the timing belt with the mark on the right side camshaft pulley. Hang the belt over the pulley with the flange facing inward. Align the timing marks on the right pulley with the one on the No. 3 cover and slide the pulley onto the end of the camshaft. Move the pulley until the camshaft knock pin hole is aligned with the groove in the pulley and then install the knock pin. Tighten the bolt to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
- Position a plate washer between the timing belt tensioner and the a block and then press in the pushrod until the holes are aligned between it and the housing. Slide a 1.27mm (3VZ-FE 1.5mm) Allen wrench through the hole to keep the push rod set. Install the dust boot and then install the tensioner. Tighten the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (26 Nm). Don't forget to pull out the Allen wrench!
- Turn the crankshaft clockwise two complete revolutions and check that all marks are still in alignment. If they aren't, remove the timing belt and start over again.
- Install the right engine mount bracket and tighten it to 30 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
- Position a new gasket and then install the upper (No. 2) timing cover. refer to the illustration for bolt positioning.
- Install the spark plugs.
- On the 2VZ-FE, install the right engine mount insulator. Tighten the bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm), the bracket nut to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm) and the body nut to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm). Install the No. 1 stay and tighten it to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm). Install the No. 2 stay and tighten the bolt to 48 ft. lbs. (66 Nm) and the nut to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
- On the 3VZ-FE, install the control rod and tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm). Install the right stay and tighten it to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).
- Install and adjust the drive belts.
- Install the fender apron seal and the wheel.
- On the 3VZ-FE, install the No. 2 stay and tighten the bolt to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm), the nut to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm). Install the No. 3 stay and tighten it to 54 ft. lbs. (73 Nm).
- Install the coolant overflow tank and the washer tank.
- Install the power steering reservoir tank and the cruise control actuator.
- Connect the battery cable, start the car and check for any leaks.

- Remove the timing belt covers as described earlier in this section.
- Remove the right engine mounting bracket by removing the nut and two bolts.
- Remove the crankshaft timing belt guide.
- Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley bolt.
- Turn the crankshaft and align the crankshaft timing pulley groove with the oil pump alignment mark. Always turn the engine clockwise.
- Ensure the timing mark of the camshaft timing pulleys and rear timing belt cover are aligned. If not, turn the engine over an additional 360 °.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
If the belt is to be reused, align the installation marks on the belt to the marks on the pulleys. If the marks have worn off, make new ones.
- Alternately loosen the two timing belt tensioner bolts. Remove the tensioner and dust boot.
- Remove the timing belt.
- Using a spanner wrench, remove the right side camshaft timing pulley. Do the same for the left side.
Make sure the left and right side camshaft pulleys are arranged on the table correctly. Do not mix them up! It is recommended to mark them with an L and R.
- Remove the bolt retaining the No. 2 idler pulley, the slide the pulley off.
- Using a 10mm hexagon wrench, remove the bolt and No. 1 idler pulley with plate washer.
- Remove the crankshaft bolt and timing belt plate. Using a gear puller, separate the crankshaft pulley from the engine.
Do not scratch the sensor portion of the crankshaft timing pulley.
- Inspect the seal for leakage and replace if necessary.
To install:
- When installing the crankshaft timing pulley, along the pulley set key with the key groove of the pulley, then slide the pulley on. Install the crankshaft timing pulley, with the sensor side facing inward. Install the timing belt plate and tighten the bolt to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
- Install the No. 1 idler pulley using a 10mm hexagon wrench, install the plate washer and idler pulley with the pivot bolt. tighten the pivot bolt to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm). Check that the pulley moves freely.
- Install the No. 2 idler pulley and tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm). Check that the pulley moves smoothly.
- Install the right side camshaft timing pulley, face the flange side of the pulley outward. Align the knock pin on the camshaft with the knock pin groove of the timing pulley, then slide the right hand camshaft pulley on. Install the pulley bolt and tighten to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 13.39 inch (340mm).
- Install the left side camshaft timing pulley, face the flange side of the pulley outward. Align the knock pin on the camshaft with the knock pin groove of the timing pulley, then slide the left side camshaft pulley on. Install the pulley bolt and tighten to 94 ft. lbs. (125 Nm).
- Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley bolt of the crankshaft. Turn the crankshaft, and align the timing marks of the crankshaft timing pulley and oil pump body.
- Using a spanner wrench, turn the camshaft pulley, align the timing marks of the timing pulley and the No. 3 timing belt cover.
- Remove any dirt or oil from the pulleys and keep them clean. Only wipe the pulleys. Face the front mark of the timing belt forward. align the installation mark on the belt with the timing mark of the crankshaft timing pulley. Align the installation marks on the timing belt with the timing marks on the camshaft timing pulleys.
- Install the timing belt in the following order:
- Crankshaft pulley
- Water pump pulley
- Left camshaft pulley
- No. 2 idler pulley
- Right camshaft pulley
- No. 1 idler pulley
- Inspect the tensioner prior to installation of the old one as follows:
- Visually check for any oil leakage. If there is only the faintest trace of oil on the seal on the push rod side, the tensioner is still useable.
- Using force against an sturdy object facing upwards only, press the rod to see if there is no movement. If the rod moves, replace the tensioner.
- Using a press, slowly press the timing belt tensioner until the holes of the pushrod and housing align. Insert a 1.27mm hexagon Allen wrench through the holes to preserve the setting position.
- Install the dust boot to the tensioner.
- Install the tensioner with the two bolts. Alternately tighten and then tighten the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). Remove the Allen wrench.
- Turn the crankshaft clockwise and align the crankshaft timing pulley groove with the oil pump alignment mark.
- Ensure the camshaft timing marks align with the timing marks on the rear timing belt cover.
- Install the timing belt guide.
- Install the right engine mounting bracket and tighten the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
- Install the No. 2 timing belt cover with the five bolts. Tighten the bolts to 74 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
- Install the engine wire protector clamp to the No. 3 timing belt cover.
- Install the engine wire protector to the No. 3 timing belt cover with the bolt.
- Install the No. 1 timing belt cover by installing the four bolts. Tighten the bolts to 74 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
- Install the crankshaft pulley. Tighten the bolt to 159 ft. lbs. (215 Nm).
- Install the No. 2 alternator bracket. Tighten the nut to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm). Do not tighten the pivot bolt at this time.
- Install the No. 2 right engine mounting bracket and the moving control rod.
- Install the right engine mounting stay.
- Connect the two ground wire connectors.
- Install and adjust the drive belts.
- Install the coolant reservoir.
- Install the right front splash shield and wheel assembly.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Start the vehicle and check for any leaks.
- Recheck the ignition timing.
Rocker Arm (Valve) Cover
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
1C-LTC and 2CL-TC Engines
See Figures 1 and 2
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove and label all electrical wiring, connectors and vacuum hoses necessary to gain removal clearance.
- Disconnect the PCV hose.
- Remove the six nuts and seal washers from the cylinder head cover. Loosen them in a crisscross pattern.
- Remove the cylinder head cover and the cover gasket from the cylinder head. Discard the gasket and replace with a new one.
- With a wire brush or gasket scraper, remove all the old gasket material from the cylinder head and the cylinder head cover gasket surfaces.
- When the cylinder head surfaces are free and clean, apply beads of sealant to the cylinder head in the locations shown in the accompanying illustration.
- Install the new gasket in the cover. Make sure that the gasket seats evenly.
- Place the cover with the gasket onto the cylinder head.
- Install the six nuts and seal washers. Tighten the nuts to 65 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
- Connect the PCV hose. Connect all removed vacuum hoses, connectors and electrical wiring. Connect the negative battery cable.
- Start the engine and inspect for oil leaks. Repair any leaks as necessary.

It is recommended when replacing the valve cover gasket you replace the seal nuts also. They may be reused only if they do not seem to be damaged.
- Remove and label all electrical wiring, connectors and vacuum hoses necessary to gain removal clearance.
- Remove the spark plug wires. Disconnect the PCV hose.
- Remove the four nuts and grommets located on top of the cylinder head cover.
On 3S-FE engines, label or arrange the grommets so that they may be reinstalled in the same order. This will minimize the possibility of oil leakage when the cylinder head cover is reinstalled.
- Remove the cylinder head cover and the cover gasket from the cylinder head. Discard the gasket and replace with a new one.
- With a wire brush or gasket scraper, remove all the old gasket material from the cylinder head and the cylinder head cover gasket surfaces.
- When the cylinder head surfaces are free and clean, apply beads of sealant to the cylinder head in the locations shown in the accompanying illustrations.
- Install the new cylinder head gasket in the cover. Make sure that the gasket seats evenly.
- Place the cylinder head cover with the gasket onto the cylinder head.
- Install the four grommets and nuts. Uniformly tighten the nuts in several passes to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm) on the 2S-ELC; 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm) on the 3S-FE and 5S-FE.
On 3S-FE engines, align the grommets as shown in the accompanying illustration to ensure proper sealing of the cylinder head cover.
- Connect the PCV hose. Connect all removed vacuum hoses, connectors and electrical wiring. Connect the negative battery cable.
- Start the engine and inspect for oil leaks. Repair any leaks as necessary.

It is recommended when replacing the valve cover gasket you replace the seal nuts also. They may be reused only if they do not seem to be damaged.
- Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds from the time the negative battery was disconnected to start work.
- Remove and label all electrical wiring, connectors and vacuum hoses necessary to gain removal clearance.
- On the 3VZ-FE, remove the V-bank cover.
- Remove the spark plug wires. Disconnect the PCV hose.
- Remove the six (2VZ-FE) or eight (3VZ-FE) nuts and seal washers located on top of the cylinder head cover.
- Remove the cylinder head cover and the cover gasket from the cylinder head. Discard the gasket and replace with a new one.
- With a wire brush or gasket scraper, remove all the old gasket material from the cylinder head and the cylinder head cover gasket surfaces.
- When the cylinder head surfaces are free and clean, apply beads of sealant to the cylinder head in the locations shown in the accompanying illustrations.
- Install the new cylinder head gasket in the cover. Make sure that the gasket seats evenly.
- Place the cylinder head cover with the gasket onto the cylinder head.
- Install the six/eight nuts and seal washers. Uniformly tighten the nuts in several passes to 52 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
- Install the spark plug wires. On the 3VZ-FE, install the V-bank cover.
- Connect the PCV hose. Attach all removed vacuum hoses, connectors and electrical wiring. Connect the negative battery cable.
- Start the engine and inspect for oil leaks. Repair any leaks as necessary.
- Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
- Disconnect the radiator inlet hose.
- Disconnect the throttle and accelerator cables.
- Remove the air cleaner cap assembly.
- Remove the V-bank cover. Use a 5mm hexagon wrench to loosen the nuts.
- Label and remove all emission control valve hoses. Disconnect any wiring interfering with the valve cover removal.
- Remove the air intake chamber. This will gain you access to the back valve cover.
- Dsiconnect the engine wire from the left hand side, No. 3 timing belt cover, rear side and right hand side. Most of the wiring is secured by nuts and or bolts to the body of the vehicle.
- Remove the ignition coils, make sure the place them in order on a table so not to mix them up.
- Remove the 8 bolts retaining the valve covers and gasket.

To install:
- Clean the mating area of the valve cover and cylinder heads well. If necessary, scrape any left gasket from either surface.
- Apply seal packing to the cylinder heads and place new gaskets into position.
- Attach the valve covers. Uniformly tighten the bolts in several passes to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
- Install the spark plugs in their proper locations, then place the ignition coils into place and secure.
- Attach all engine wiring be sure to secure each harness properly.
- Install the air intake chamber.
- Attach all emission hoses and wiring.
- Attach the V-bank cover.
