#PIT4305B: The Sunroof Will Only Vent Or Only Slide Open - keywords control inoperative module motor roof switch timing - (Apr 18, 2007)

Subject:The Sunroof Will Only Vent Or Only Slide Open

Models:2005-2007 Chevrolet Equinox

This PI was superseded to update models. Please discard PIT4305A.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

The sunroof will only go to the vent position or only slide open. This concern can happen if the sunroof control module and sunroof motor are not timed correctly.

Recommendation/Instructions:

To time the sunroof motor and control module, follow the instructions below.

  1. Using the vehicle switches, move the sunroof glass panel as near to the closed position as possible.
  2. Without removing any wiring connections, unbolt the motorfrom the sunroof beam. Note: Once the motor is removed, the sunroof mechanism will be free to move.
  3. Remove the glass and manually push the right and left drive cable plate until the closed position is reached (Closed position = 46mm between rear of locator and front of drive cable plate). See picture below.
    Object Number:(NNN) NNN-NNNN Size: SH

  4. With the sunroof electronics still connected the sunroof wire harness, but disconnected from the sunroof beam, press and hold the closed button until the motor stops.
  5. Release and again press the close button and verify that the motor and electronics think that the sunroof is in the closed position.
  6. Bolt the retimed motor / electronics into the mechanically retimed sunroof.
  7. Verify correct sunroof operation.

Note: It is very important to understand the sunroof switch operation. If the sunroof module and motor were not timed correctly, the sunroof switch may operate the glass differently then it was designed to. This switch will slide forward and rearward, and this switch can also be pulled down or pushed up. Below is the instruction on how the sunroof switch operates.

To express-open the sunroof glass panel and sunshade, press/slide the switch rearward and release it. To stop the sunroof before it is completely open, press/slide the switch rearward again.

To close the sunroof, press/slide forward and hold the switch until the sunroof stops, lifts and seals at the back of the sunroof glass. Press/slide forward on the switch again to make sure the sunroof is fully closed.

To put the sunroof in the vent position, pull down on the front of the switch. Push up on the front of the switch to close it.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

#05-08-67-010A: Sunroof will not Close from Vent, Partly Opened, or Fully Opened Position (Replace Sunroof Control Module) - (Oct 18, 2005)

Subject:Sunroof Will Not Close from Vent, Partly Opened, or Fully Opened Position (Replace Sunroof Control Module)

Models:2005 Chevrolet Equinox

with Sunroof (RPO CF5)

Attention:Fixed Operations Manager and Technician

Condition

Some customers may comment that the sunroof will no longer respond to the control switch while in a vented, partially opened, or fully opened position.

Cause

A software issue with the sunroof control module may cause the sunroof control module to incorrectly indicate a "closed" position, which may result in no power to the sunroof motor.

Correction

Verify the customers concern . If a condition is present, replace the sunroof control module with a new sunroof control module, P/N 15847643. Refer to the Service Procedure in this bulletin.

Service Procedure

  1. Verify the customer concern by opening and closing the sunroof.
If the sunroof will not open , check the power windows.
-If the power windows are also inoperative, check the fuse. If the fuse has opened, refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 05-08-64-004 to install 30A circuit breaker.
-If the power windows are fully functional, refer to "Power Sunroof Inoperative" diagnostics (SI Document ID#(NNN) NNN-NNNN in the Body section of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox or Saturn VUE Service Manual.
If the sunroof will open (or is already open), but will not close , proceed to Step 2.
  2. Replace the sunroof control module. Refer to "Sunroof Control Module Replacement" procedure in the Body section of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox Service Manual (SI Document ID#(NNN) NNN-NNNN or Saturn VUE Service Manual (SI Document ID#(NNN) NNN-NNNN.
  3. Open and close the sunroof in order to confirm that the customer concern has been resolved.

Diagnosis & Testing
  1. Inspect the sunroof fuses. Inspect for a short circuit and replace the fuses if necessary.
  2. If the sunroof glass is fully closed:
    1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
    2. Attempt to slide the sunroof glass towards the open position, by connecting a jumper wire between the sunroof switch low reference circuit and the sunroof switch open signal circuit of the sunroof switch harness connector, for 3 seconds.
    3. If it does, repair or replace the switch as required.

  3. If the sunroof glass is not fully closed:
    1. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF. At the sunroof switch harness connector, using 2 jumper wires, connect 1 jumper wire to the sunroof switch open signal circuit and sunroof switch open vent signal circuit .
    2. Attempt to slide the sunroof glass towards the closed position, by connecting the other ends of the jumper wires, at the same time, for 3 seconds to the sunroof switch low reference circuit of the sunroof switch harness connector.
    3. If the sunroof closes, repair or replace the switch as required.

  4. If the sunroof does not close:
    1. Remove the jumper wires. Measure the voltage of the sunroof switch open signal circuit at the sunroof switch harness connector to ground. Voltage should be between 4.6-5.2 volts.
    2. Measure the voltage of the sunroof switch open vent signal circuit at the sunroof switch harness connector to ground. Voltage should be between 4.6-5.2 volts.
    3. Measure the voltage between the sunroof switch express signal circuit at the sunroof switch harness connector to ground. Voltage should be between 4.6-5.2 volts.
    4. Measure the voltage between the sunroof switch express signal circuit and the sunroof switch low reference circuit at the sunroof switch harness connector. Voltage should be between 4.6-5.2 volts.
    5. If voltage is at the required specification, repair any open circuits as required.

  5. Disconnect the sunroof module harness connector that contains the sunroof switch signal circuits. Test for shorts between the sunroof switch signal circuits.
  6. Using a test lamp:
    1. Reconnect the sunroof switch to the harness connector.
    2. Reconnect the sunroof module harness connector that contains the sunroof switch signal circuit to the sunroof module.
    3. Disconnect the sunroof motor connector.
    4. Connect a test lamp between the sunroof motor open control and motor close control circuits at the harness connector, module side.
    5. If the test lamp illuminates, Connect a test lamp between the sunroof motor open control circuit at the harness connector, module side, and ground.
    6. Operate the sunroof switch to the Open, Non Express, position. If the test lamp illuminates again, test the sunroof motor open control circuit for a short to voltage.
    7. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the sunroof motor close control circuit for a short to voltage.

  7. Continuing to use the test lamp:
    1. Leave the test lamp between the sunroof motor open control and motor close control circuits at the harness connector, module side.
    2. While observing the test lamp, press the sunroof switch for 3 seconds to the close position then 3 seconds to the open position.
    3. If the test lamp illuminates, check for poor connections at the sunroof motor.

  8. If all wiring checks out ok, the sunroof motor or sunroof module may need to be replaced.
