how to change the brake drum on Chevy Lumina?

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION




CAUTION
Older brake pads or shoes may contain asbestos, which has been determined to be a cancer causing agent. Never clean the brake surfaces with compressed air! Avoid inhaling any dust from any brake surface! When cleaning the brake surfaces, use a commercially available brake cleaning fluid.

  1. Mark the relationship of the wheel to the axle flange to help maintain wheel balance after assembly.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  3. Mark the relationship of the brake drum to the axle flange.

Do not pry against the splash shield that surrounds the backing plate in an attempt to free the drum. This will bend the splash shield.

  1. If difficulty is encountered in removing the brake drum, the following steps may be of assistance.
    1. Make sure the parking brake is released.
    2. Back off the parking brake cable adjustment.
    3. Remove the access hole plug from the backing plate.
    4. Using a screwdriver, back off the adjusting screw.

    1. Reinstall the access hole plug to prevent dirt or contamination from entering the drum brake assembly.
    2. Use a small amount of penetrating oil applied around the brake drum pilot hole.
    3. Carefully remove the brake drum from the vehicle.


  1. After removing the brake drum it should be checked for the following:
    1. Inspecting for cracks and deep grooves.
    2. Inspect for out of round and taper.
    3. Inspecting for hot spots (black in color).

To install:
  1. Install the brake drum onto the vehicle aligning the reference marks on the axle flange.
  2. Install the tire and wheel assembly and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  3. Carefully lower the vehicle, then tighten the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  4. Road test the vehicle for proper brake operation.

INSPECTION



  1. After removing the brake drum, wipe out the accumulated dust with a damp cloth.


WARNING
Do not blow the brake dust out of the drums with compressed air or lung-power. Brake linings contain asbestos, a known cancer causing substance. Dispose of the cloth used to clean the parts after use.

  1. Inspect the drums for cracks, deep grooves, roughness, scoring, or out-of-roundness. Replace any drum which is cracked; do not try to weld it up.
  2. Smooth any slight scores by polishing the friction surface with fine emery cloth. Heavy or extensive scoring will cause excessive lining wear and should be removed from the drum through resurfacing, a job to be referred to your local machine shop or garage. The maximum refinished diameter of the drums is 8.880 in. (225.5mm). The drum must be replaced if the diameter is 8.909 in. (226.30mm).
