how to change parking brake cable on Chevy Lumina?

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION



Front
  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2. Loosen the adjuster nut and disconnect the front cable from the connector.
  3. Disconnect the cable from the clip at the frame and the hanger.
  4. Lower the vehicle. Unfasten the retaining screws and nut, then lower the driver's side sound insulator panel to gain access to the parking brake pedal assembly.
  5. Remove the carpet finish molding and lift the carpet.
  6. Remove the cable retaining clip at the lever assembly.

  1. Disconnect the cable from the parking brake pedal by compressing the retainer fingers. Remove the cable from the vehicle.

To install:
  1. Insert the cable through the floor pan and grommet and seat the grommet.
  2. Install the grommet retainer to the floor pan.
  3. Install the cable in the retaining clips.
  4. Connect the cable and casing to the control assembly and seat the retaining tangs.
  5. Install the cable retaining clip at the lever assembly.
  6. Place the carpet in position and install the carpet finish molding.
  7. Install the driver's side insulator panel screws and nuts.
  8. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  9. Install the cable to the hanger and clip at the frame.
  10. Connect the cable to the equalizer and connector.
  11. Adjust the parking brake cable and lower the vehicle.

Rear

There is a special tool available which is designed to compress the rear parking brake cable retaining tangs for removal from the brake backing plate; however, another method is illustrated in the accompanying figures.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2. Loosen the equalizer nut.
  3. Disconnect the cable at the equalizer and connector.
  4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  5. Remove the brake drum.
  6. Disconnect the cable from the parking brake lever.
  7. Disconnect the cable and spring from the bracket at the caliper.
  8. Use the proper tool, or follow the procedure shown in the accompanying figure to depress the retaining tangs and remove the cable and casing from the backing plate.

To install:
  1. Install the cable and casing to the backing plate and seat the retaining tangs.
  2. Connect the cable and spring to the bracket at the caliper.
  3. Connect the cable at the parking brake lever.
  4. Install the brake drum and the tire and wheel assembly.
  5. Connect the cable at the equalizer and connector.
  6. Adjust the parking brake cable and lower the vehicle.

ADJUSTMENT



  1. Set the parking brake pedal three clicks.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  3. Lubricate the threaded adjusting rod on both sides of the nut.
  4. Tighten the equalizer nut until the right rear wheel can just be turned rearward with 2 hands but cannot be turned forward.
  5. Release the parking brake.
  6. Rotate the rear wheels in the forward motion. There should be no brake drag.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
