How to wire alternator on buick 1984 regal?

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the serpentine drive belt, as outlined in Routine Maintenanceof this repair guide.
  3. Unfasten the rear bracket/heat shield nuts from the exhaust manifold.
  4. Remove the rear bracket/heat shield bolts from the block, near the water pump.
  5. Unfasten the rear bracket/heat shield retaining nuts at the alternator, then remove the bracket/heat shield.

To install:
  1. Position the alternator in the vehicle, then secure using the retaining bolts. Tighten the long bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) and the short bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2. Fasten the battery positive lead and nut to the alternator output terminal and tighten to 70 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  3. Attach the electrical connector to the alternator.
  4. Position the rear bracket/heat shield, then install the retaining bolt at the alternator. Tighten the bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  5. Fasten the rear bracket/heat shield bolts to the block, near the water pump. Tighten to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm). Install the bracket/shield-to-exhaust manifold nuts and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  6. Install the serpentine drive belt.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.

See Figure 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the electrical center fuse block shield.
  3. Remove the serpentine belt.
  4. Label and detach the alternator electrical connector(s). Unfasten the nut and the battery positive connector from the alternator.
  5. Unfasten the alternator brace bolt and the rear and front retaining bolts.

WARNING
Be very careful not to damage the A/C compressor and condenser hose when removing the alternator.

  1. Lift the alternator out between the engine lifting eyelet and the A/C compressor and condenser hose, to the passenger side, then up and out.

To install:
  1. Position the alternator in the vehicle, then install the front attaching bolt, but do not tighten at this time. Install rear and brace retaining bolts.
  2. Tighten the long bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm), the short bolt to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm) and the brace bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  3. Fasten the battery positive connector and nut to the alternator.
  4. Attach the alternator electrical connector, then install the serpentine belt and fuse block shield.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable and check for proper operation.

See Figure 4

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the serpentine belt.
  3. Detach the electrical connector(s) from the back of the alternator.
  4. Unfasten the nut and the battery positive lead from the alternator output (BAT) terminal.
  5. Remove the rear then the front attaching bolts and remove the heat shield.
  6. Carefully remove the alternator assembly, making sure all wires are disconnected.

To install:
  1. Position the alternator into the mounting bracket and install the front mounting bolts but do not tighten at this time.
  2. Install the heat shield and the rear the rear mounting bolt.
  3. Tighten the long bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) and the short bolt and heat shield bolt to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  4. Attach the electrical connector(s).
  5. Install the serpentine belt.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.

--------------

To prevent damage to the on-board computer, alternator, and regulator, the following precautions must be taken when working with the electrical system.
If the battery is removed for any reason, make sure it is reconnected with the correct polarity. Reversing the battery connections may result in damage to the one-way rectifiers. Always check the battery polarity visually. This is to be done before any connections are made to be sure that all of the connections correspond to the battery ground polarity.
When utilizing a booster battery as a starting aid, always connect the positive-to-positive terminals and the negative terminals from the booster battery to a good engine ground on the vehicle being started.
Never use a fast charger as a booster to start vehicles.
Disconnect the battery cables when charging the battery with a fast charger; the charger has a tendency to force current through the diodes in the opposite direction for which they were designed. This burns out the diodes.
Make sure the ignition switch if OFF when connecting or disconnecting any electrical component, especially on cars with any on-board computer system.
Never attempt to polarize the alternator.
Do not use test lights of more than 12 volts when checking diode continuity.
Do not short across or ground any of the alternator terminals.
The polarity of the battery, alternator and regulator must be matched and considered before making any electrical connections within the system.
Never separate the alternator on an open circuit. Make sure all connections within the circuit are clean and tight.
Disconnect the battery ground terminal when performing any service on electrical components.
Disconnect the battery if arc welding is to be done on the vehicle.
