2001 Mazda tribute water pump disassembly and replacement:---

2.0L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Right front wheel
    Splash shield
    Drive belt
    Water pump pulley
    Water pump


To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    Water pump pulley. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    Drive belt
    Splash shield
    Right front wheel
    Negative battery cable

  2. Refill the cooling system.
  3. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Right front wheel
    Splash shield
    Drive belt
    Water pump pulley
    Water pump


To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    Water pump pulley. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    Drive belt
    Splash shield
    Right front wheel
    Negative battery cable

  2. Refill the cooling system.
  3. Start the engine and check for leaks, repair if necessary.

2.3L Engine

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  4. Remove the coolant pump pulley bolts.
  5. Remove the coolant pump pulley.
  6. Remove the coolant pump bolts.
  7. Remove the coolant pump.
  8. Remove the coolant pump O-ring seal.
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Torque the water pump bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Torque the pulley bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  10. Fill and bleed the cooling system.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE
    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies, if equipped.

  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  7. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  8. Remove the water pump pulley.
  9. Remove the water pump bolts.
  10. Remove the water pump.
  11. Remove the water pump O-ring seal.
  12. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Torque the water pump bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Torque the pulley bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  13. Fill and bleed the cooling system.

3.0L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Air cleaner outlet tube
    Water pump belt tensioner
    Coolant hoses
    Water pump
    Water pump from the housing

To install:



Water pump to the housing. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
Water pump. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
Coolant hoses
Water pump belt tensioner
Air cleaner outlet tube
Negative battery cable

  1. Refill the cooling system.
  2. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.

Except 2006 Late Build Engines

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE

Water pump. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
Coolant hoses
Water pump belt tensioner
Air cleaner outlet tube
Negative battery cable

  1. Refill the cooling system. Bleed the cooling system.
  2. Start the engine and check for leaks, repair if necessary.

Late Build

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE
    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies, if equipped.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4. Drain the cooling system.
  5. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube and position it to the side.
  6. Remove the water pump drive belt.
  7. Using a water pump pulley removal tool, remove the water pump drive pulley.
  8. Disconnect the heater hose from the water pump. Disconnect the water pump to engine hose and position it to the side.
  9. Remove the three bolts from the water pump. Reposition the water pump to thermostat housing clamp. Remove the water pump and hose, as an assembly.

To install:

  1. Position the water and install the retaining bolts. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) and than an additional 90 degrees.
  2. Connect the hoses.
  3. Install the water pump drive pulley flush with the end of the camshaft.
  4. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  5. Fill the cooling system with the proper grade and type coolant. Bleed the cooling system.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
