CAUTION
During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.


CAUTION
The crankshaft, the crankshaft sprocket and the pulley are fitted together by friction, using diamond washers between the flange faces on each part. For that reason, the crankshaft sprocket is also unfastened if you loosen the pulley. Therefore, the engine must be retimed each time the damper is removed. Otherwise severe engine damage can occur.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE
    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies, if equipped.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4. Remove the accessory drive belt and idler pulleys.
  5. Remove the engine mount.
  6. Remove the valve cover.
    CAUTION
    Failure to position the No. 1 piston at top dead center (TDC) can result in damage to the engine. Turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation only.

  7. Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the crankshaft clockwise to position the No. 1 piston at TDC.
    CAUTION
    The special tool 303-465 is for camshaft alignment only. Using this tool to prevent engine rotation can result in engine damage.


    NOTE
    The camshaft timing slots are offset. If the special tool cannot be installed, rotate the crankshaft one complete revolution clockwise to correctly position the camshafts.

  8. Install special tool 303-465 in the slots on the rear of both camshafts.
  9. Remove the engine plug bolt.
    NOTE
    Only turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation.


    NOTE
    Installing the special tool in this step will prevent the engine from being rotated in the clockwise direction.

  10. Install special tool 303-507.
  11. Install the special tools 205-126 and 205-072-02.
    CAUTION
    Failure to hold the crankshaft pulley in place while loosening the bolt can result in damage to the engine.

  12. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer.
  13. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  14. Remove the crankshaft front seal.
  15. Remove the coolant pump pulley.
  16. Remove the power steering pump and position it aside.
    NOTE
    The bolt under the power steering pressure tube will remain with the power steering pump.

  17. Remove the CKP sensor.
    NOTE
    Whenever the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor is removed, a new one must be installed, using the alignment jig supplied with the new part.

  18. Remove the engine front cover bolts (there are 22).
  19. Remove the engine front cover.
  20. Remove the timing chain tensioner. Compress the timing chain tensioner, and insert a paper clip into the hole to retain the tensioner.

  21. Remove the RH timing chain guide.
  22. Remove the timing chain.
  23. Remove the LH timing chain guide.
  24. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts.
  25. Remove the camshaft sprockets.
    CAUTION
    Do not rely on the Camshaft Alignment Plate to prevent camshaft rotation. Damage to the tool or the camshaft can occur. Use the flats on the camshaft to prevent camshaft rotation.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the following:
    CAUTION
    Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive disks or other abrasive means to clean sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.

  2. Clean and inspect the mounting surfaces of the engine and the front cover.
    NOTE
    The engine front cover must be installed and the bolts tightened within four minutes of applying the silicone gasket and sealant.

  3. Apply a 2.5 mm bead of silicone gasket and sealant to the cylinder head and oil pan joint areas. Apply a 2.5 mm bead of silicone gasket and sealant to the front cover.

  4. Install the engine front cover. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown, to the following specifications:
    1. Tighten the 8 mm bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
    2. Tighten the 13 mm bolts to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).

  5. Position the power steering pump and install the bolts.
    NOTE
    Remove the through-bolt from the special tool.


    NOTE
    Lubricate the oil seal with clean engine oil.

  6. Using a seal driver, install the crankshaft front oil seal.
    NOTE
    Do not reuse the crankshaft damper bolt.


    NOTE
    Apply clean engine oil on the seal area before installing.

  7. Install the crankshaft pulley and hand-tighten the bolt.
    CAUTION
    Only hand-tighten the bolt or damage to the front cover can occur.


    NOTE
    This step will correctly align the crankshaft pulley to the crankshaft.

  8. Install a standard 6 mm x 18 mm bolt through the crankshaft pulley and thread it into the front cover. Rotate the pulley as necessary to align the bolt holes.
    CAUTION
    Failure to hold the crankshaft pulley in place while tightening the bolt can cause damage to the engine front cover.

  9. Using the special tools to hold the crankshaft pulley in place, tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt in two stages:
    1. Stage 1: Tighten to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.).
    2. Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees ( 1 / 4 turn).

  10. Remove the 6 mm x 18 mm bolt.
  11. Remove special tool 303-507.
  12. Remove special tool 303-465.
    NOTE
    Only turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation.

  13. Turn the engine two complete revolutions.
    NOTE
    Only turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation.

  14. Turn the crankshaft until the No. 1 piston is at TDC.
  15. Install special tool 303-507.
    CAUTION
    Only hand-tighten the bolt or damage to the front cover can occur.

  16. Using the 6 mm x 18 mm bolt, check the position of the crankshaft pulley. If it is not possible to install the bolt, correct the engine timing.
  17. Using special tool 303-465, check the position of the camshafts. If it is not possible to install the special tool, correct the engine timing.
  18. Install the CKP sensor. Do not tighten the bolts at this time.
  19. Adjust the CKP sensor alignment jig and tighten the bolts.
  20. Remove the 6 mm x 18 mm bolt.
  21. Install the engine plug bolt.

3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Engine front cover
    Ignition pulse wheel and install a damper bolt
    Spark plugs

  3. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to position the keyway at the 11 o-clock position and the camshafts in the correct positions. The No. 1 cylinder will be at Top Dead Center (TDC).
  4. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise 120 degrees to the 3 o-clock position to locate the right side camshafts in the neutral position.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Right side timing chain and tensioner
    Tensioner arm and timing chain guide

  6. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise 2 times to position the keyway at the 11 o-clock position. This will position the left side camshafts in the neutral position.
  7. Verify that the left side crankshafts are in the neutral position and mark the link position on the crankshaft sprocket.
  8. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Left side timing chain and tensioner
    Tensioner arm and timing chain guide
    Damper bolt and crankshaft sprockets


To install:

  1. Install the crankshaft sprockets.
  2. Position the timing chain tensioner in a soft jaw vise. Hold the ratchet lock mechanism away from the ratchet stem and slowly compress the timing chain tensioner
  3. If the timing marks on the chain are not visible, use a permanent marker to mark the left and right side timing chains. Mark the timing chains in the following sequence:
    1. Mark any link to use as the crankshaft timing mark.
    2. Count 29 links from the crankshaft timing mark and mark the link as the exhaust cam sprocket timing mark.
    3. Continue counting to 42 and mark the link as the intake sprocket timing mark

  4. Install the guide. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  5. Install the left side timing chain and align the chain in the following sequence:
    1. Mark any link to use as the crankshaft timing mark.
    2. Count 29 links from the crankshaft timing mark and mark the link as the exhaust cam sprocket timing mark.
    3. Continue counting to 42 and mark the link as the intake sprocket timing mark

  6. Install or connect the following:

    Left side timing chain and tensioner arm. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    Crankshaft damper bolt and rotate the keyway to the 3 o-clock position

  7. Verify that the right side camshafts are properly positioned and install the right side timing chain and guide. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8. Make certain that the timing chain aligns with the marks on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets

CAUTION
Install the pulse wheel with the keyway in the slot stamped 20-25-34Y-30M (Color Blur).

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Right side timing chain tensioner and arm. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and remove the damper bolt
    Ignition pulse wheel
    Spark plugs
    Engine front cover
    Negative battery cable



CAUTION

NOTE
Failure to verify correct timing drive component alignment will result in severe engine damage.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE
    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies, if equipped.

  5. Remove the crankshaft front oil seal.
  6. Remove the front cover.
    NOTE
    Install the pulse wheel with the keyway in the slot stamped 20-25-34Y-30M (Color Blue) on 2001-2004 engines. On 2005-2006 engines, install the pulse wheel with the keyway in the slot stamped "30" or "30RFF" (orange in color).

  7. Remove the ignition pulse wheel. Install the damper bolt. Remove the spark plugs.

  8. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to position the keyway at the 11 o-clock position and the camshafts in the correct positions. The No. 1 cylinder will be at Top Dead Center (TDC).
    NOTE
    Verify that the camshafts are correctly located, if not rotate the crankshaft one additional turn and recheck.

  9. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise 120 degrees to the 3 o-clock position to locate the right side camshafts in the neutral position. Verify that the right camshafts are in the neutral position.

  10. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Right side timing chain and tensioner
    Tensioner arm and timing chain guide

  11. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise 1 2 / 3 times to position the keyway at the 11 o-clock position. This will position the left side camshafts in the neutral position.

  12. Verify that the left side camshafts are in the neutral position and mark the link position on the crankshaft sprocket.
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Left side timing chain and tensioner
    Tensioner arm and timing chain guide
    Damper bolt and crankshaft sprockets


To install:

  1. Install the crankshaft sprockets.

  2. Position the timing chain tensioner in a soft jaw vise. Hold the ratchet lock mechanism away from the ratchet stem and slowly compress the timing chain tensioner. Retain the piston with a 1.5mm wire or paper clip.
  3. If the timing marks on the chain are not visible, use a permanent marker to mark the left and right side timing chains. Mark the timing chains in the following sequence:
    1. Mark any link to use as the crankshaft timing mark.
    2. Count 29 links (including the starting link) in the counterclockwise direction from the crankshaft timing mark and mark the link as the left hand chain exhaust/right hand chain intake cam sprocket timing mark.
    3. Continue counting to 42 and mark the link as the left hand chain exhaust/right hand chain intake sprocket timing mark.

  4. Install the guide. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  5. Install the left side timing chain and align the chain in the following sequence:
    1. Mark any link to use as the crankshaft timing mark.
    2. Count 29 links from the crankshaft timing mark and mark the link as the exhaust cam sprocket timing mark.
    3. Continue counting to 42 and mark the link as the intake sprocket timing mark

  6. Install or connect the following:

    Left side timing chain and tensioner arm. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    Crankshaft damper bolt and rotate the keyway to the 3 o-clock position.

  7. Verify that the right side camshafts are properly positioned and install the right side timing chain and guide. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8. Make certain that the timing chain aligns with the marks on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Right side timing chain tensioner and arm. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and remove the damper bolt
    LH and RH chain tensioner position retaining wires

  10. Remove the crankshaft damper bolt.

  11. Verify valve timing, there should be 12 chain links between the front camshaft timing marks. There should be 27 chain links between the camshaft and crankshaft timing marks. There should be 30 chain links between the camshaft and crankshaft timing marks.
    NOTE
    Failure to verify correct timing drive component alignment will result in severe engine damage.

  12. Install the ignition pulse wheel.
    NOTE
    Install the pulse wheel with the keyway in the slot stamped 20-25-34Y-30M (Color Blue) on 2001-2004 engines. On 2005-2006 engines, install the pulse wheel with the keyway in the slot stamped "30" or "30RFF" (orange in color).



    Spark plugs
    Engine front cover
    Negative battery cable
