how to remove tailgate strut on Cadillac SRX

This procedure also helps in removing third brake light and tail gate/lift gate strut:----

Remove the liftgate interior trim applique and locate two additional fasteners that hold the bottom edge of the brake light bezel down. The third brake light also has three locating clips that lift off easily.

Remove the liftgate.

Remove the fasteners securing the high mounted stop lamp to the liftgate.

Separate the rear edge weatherstrip of the bezel from the liftgate. Use a plastic flat-bladed tool to release the adhesive strip from the liftgate.

Disconnect the high mounted stop lamp electrical connector from the wiring harness.

Separate the front edge weatherstrip from the bezel. Use a plastic flat-bladed tool to release the adhesive strip from the bezel.

Remove the fasteners securing the high mounted stop lamp to the bezel.

Remove the high mounted stop lamp from the bezel.

Remove the rear wiper arm.

Open the liftgate.

Remove the liftgate struts.

Remove the liftgate interior trim panel. Remove the liftgate applique.

Remove the liftgate wiring harness.

Remove the rear washer hose from the wiper motor assembly.

Remove the wiper motor.

With a grease pencil, mark the location of the liftgate hinge to the liftgate.

With an assistant, remove the bolts from the liftgate hinge.

With an assistant, remove the liftgate from the vehicle.

  • Raise the lift gate. Use a broom handle propped under the lift gate to keep it open enough so that you can comfortably access the struts.

  • Use a flat blade screw driver and carefully pry off the clips at the top and bottom of the strut. Set the clips aside.

  • Remove the strut by pulling the strut socket away from the ball mounting on the lift gate and the door jamb. Discard the strut.

  • Place the new strut into position by pushing the sockets at the top and bottom of the strut onto the ball mountings on the lift gate and the door jamb.

  • Replace the strut holding clips by pushing them into position until they snap into place. Repeat these steps if your lift gate has a strut on both the right and left side.

  • Remove the broom handle and close the lift gate.
