LEXUS LS 430 steering parts removal details:---

  1. The steering shaft removal for LEXUS LS 430:---
  2. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Steering wheel
    Front wheels
    Brake calipers
    Outer tie rod ends
    Engine under cover
    Intermediate shaft
    Front subframe brace
    Pressure and return lines
    Steering gear


To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values:

    Steering gear mounting bracket bolts: 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm)
    Fluid return line: 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
    Fluid pressure line: 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm)
    Front subframe brace large bolts: 88 ft. lbs. (119 Nm)
    Front subframe brace small bolts: 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm)
    Tie rod end nuts: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
    Steering wheel nut: 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel(s)
    Engine undercover by removing the 8 bolts and 5 screws
    Cotter pin and nut holding each tie rod to the steering knuckle
    Tie rod end from the steering knuckle with a tie rod end puller

  3. Place matchmarks on the sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
  4. Loosen the top bolt holding the sliding yoke to the intermediate shaft. Remove the bottom bolt holding the sliding yoke to the steering rack.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Pressure feed and return lines to the rack and pinion
    Power steering connector
    4 mount bolts and nuts to the power steering rack
    2 brackets and grommets
    Power steering rack from the vehicle


To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering rack to the vehicle.
    2 brackets and grommets to the power steering rack.
    4 bolts and tighten the bolts to 56 ft. lbs. (76 Nm).
    Power steering solenoid connector
    Pressure feed and return tubes. Tighten the union bolt to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).

  2. Align the matchmarks on the sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
  3. Tighten the bolt holding the sliding yoke to the steering rack to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  4. Tighten the bolt holding the sliding yoke to the intermediate shaft to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
    Engine undercover
    Wheel(s)

  6. Bleed the power steering system and check the front end alignment.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any work.
    Front wheels
    Steering wheel switch & volume case
    Steering wheel pad
    Steering wheel column lower cover
    Horn button
    Steering wheel
    Brake caliper
    Tie rods from lower ball joint
    Engine under cover
    Front suspension member braces
    Steering slide yoke. Match-mark with control valve shaft before removal
    Oil feed tubes

  4. Remove Rack & Pinion Assembly
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Tube clamps on rack assembly
    Connector assembly
    4 gear assembly set bolts
    Steering gear
    Steering rack housing bracket

  6. Match-mark and remove tie rod assemblies

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Tie rod assemblies. Align match marks
    Oil feed tubes
    Rack & Pinion gear assembly with 4 set bolts; torque to 48 ft. lbs (65 Nm)
    Steering sliding yoke assembly
    Pressure and return tubes
    Tie rod assemblies to lower ball joint; torque to 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm)
    Brake calipers
    Front suspension member braces
    Engine under cover
    Center spiral cable
    Temporarily tighten steering wheel assembly
    Center steering wheel and fully tighten set nut
    Horn button
    Steering wheel covers
    Steering pad modulator switch
    Negative battery cable
    Bleed power steering system
    Front wheels

  2. Inspect toe in and adjust as necessary
  3. Test drive



Steering Wheel

Removal & Installation


  1. Disable and remove the drivers side airbag.
  2. Disconnect all the electrical connectors.
  3. Partially remove the steering wheel bolt and leave the bolt in the column.
  4. Install puller or equivalent using the top of the bolt to push on.
    NOTE
    Ensure the bolts are threaded firmly into the steering wheel.

  5. Remove the steering wheel.

To install:

  1. Install steering wheel to the column
    NOTE
    Do not reuse the old steering wheel bolt - a new bolt must be used each time the steering wheel is removed.


    NOTE
    Be certain that the steering wheel mounting bolt is tightened to the proper torque specification to ensure proper clockspring operation.

  2. Install the new steering wheel bolt . Tighten the bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  3. Reconnect all the electrical connectors.
  4. Install the drivers side air bag.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any work.
  4. Remove the lower steering wheel cover.
  5. Remove connector cover.
  6. Disconnect the connector and remove the steering pad switch.
  7. Remove the horn button assembly.
  8. Remove the steering wheel assembly as follows:


    1. Remove the steering wheel assy set nut.
    2. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel assy and steering main shaft assy.
    3. Using SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021), remove the steering wheel assy.


To install:

  1. Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel assy and steering main shaft assy.
  2. Install the steering wheel assy set nut and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  3. Install the horn button assembly.
  4. Connect the connector, then install the steering pad switch with the 2 screws.
  5. Install the connector cover.
  6. Install the lower steering wheel cover.
  7. Inspect operation of the SRS warning light.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any work.
    Front wheels
    Steering wheel switch & volume case
    Steering wheel pad
    Steering wheel column lower cover
    Horn button
    Steering wheel
    Brake caliper
    Tie rods from lower ball joint
    Engine under cover
    Front suspension member braces
    Steering slide yoke. Match-mark with control valve shaft before removal
    Oil feed tubes

  4. Remove Rack & Pinion Assembly
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Tube clamps on rack assembly
    Connector assembly
    4 gear assembly set bolts
    Steering gear
    Steering rack housing bracket

  6. Match-mark and remove tie rod assemblies

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Tie rod assemblies. Align match marks
    Oil feed tubes
    Rack & Pinion gear assembly with 4 set bolts; torque to 48 ft. lbs (65 Nm)
    Steering sliding yoke assembly
    Pressure and return tubes
    Tie rod assemblies to lower ball joint; torque to 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm)
    Brake calipers
    Front suspension member braces
    Engine under cover
    Center spiral cable
    Temporarily tighten steering wheel assembly
    Center steering wheel and fully tighten set nut
    Horn button
    Steering wheel covers
    Steering pad modulator switch
    Negative battery cable
    Bleed power steering system
    Front wheels

  2. Inspect toe in and adjust as necessary
  3. Test drive

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds before working on the vehicle to disarm the air bag.
    Front wheels
    Left and right front fender apron seals
    Cotter pin and nut holding the steering knuckle to the tie rod end. Using a tie rod puller, disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.

  3. Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and the control valve shaft.
  4. Loosen the upper bolt and remove the lower bolt holding the control valve shaft to the intermediate shaft. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from steering rack housing.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Tube clamp
    Return line and the pressure line from the control valve housing
    4 stabilizer bar bolts and 2 nuts. Position the stabilizer bar out of the way. Do not remove the sway bar from the vehicle.
    Heated Oxygen (HO 2 ) sensor (bank 1 sensor 1).
    2 steering gear mounting bolts and nuts. Remove the steering gear through the left side of the vehicle.


To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear on the vehicle and install the 2 mounting bolts and nuts. Tighten the nuts and bolts to 134 ft. lbs. (181 Nm).
    HO 2 sensor. Tighten the sensor to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
    Stabilizer bar bolts and nuts and tighten as follows: Bolts: 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm); Nuts: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
    Pressure and return lines and tighten the connectors to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    Tube clamp and tighten the nut to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    Intermediate shaft to the steering rack and tighten the retaining bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    Tie rods to the steering knuckles with the castellated nuts. Tighten the nut to 36 ft. lbs. and install a new cotter pin. The prongs of the cotter pin should be firmly wrapped around the flats of the nut.
    Front fender apron seals by installing the 2 bolts
    Front wheels and lower the vehicle
    Power steering fluid
    Negative battery cable

  2. Release the steering wheel
  3. Bleed the system
  4. Check for leaks, adjust the toe-in and check the steering wheel center point

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel(s)
    Engine undercover by removing the 8 bolts and 5 screws.
    Cotter pin and nut holding each tie rod to the steering knuckle.
    Tie rod end from the steering knuckle with a tie rod end puller.

  3. Place matchmarks on the sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
  4. Loosen the top bolt holding the sliding yoke to the intermediate shaft. Remove the bottom bolt holding the sliding yoke to the steering rack.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Pressure feed and return lines to the rack and pinion
    Power steering connector
    4 mount bolts and nuts to the power steering rack
    2 brackets and grommets
    Power steering rack from the vehicle


To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering rack to the vehicle.
    2 brackets and grommets to the power steering rack.
    4 bolts and tighten the bolts to 56 ft. lbs. (76 Nm).
    Power steering solenoid connector
    Pressure feed and return tubes. Tighten the union bolt to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).

  2. Align the matchmarks on the sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
  3. Tighten the bolt holding the sliding yoke to the steering rack to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  4. Tighten the bolt holding the sliding yoke to the intermediate shaft to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
    Engine undercover
    Wheel(s)

  6. Bleed the power steering system and check the front end alignment.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds before working on the vehicle to disarm the air bag.
    Front wheels
    Engine under cover
    No. 2 engine under cover
    Front lower suspension member protector

  3. Separate the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly as follows:
    1. To prevent steering wheel rotation and possible damage to the spiral cable, fix the steering wheel with the seat belt.
    2. Loosen the bolts and slide, but do not separate the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly.
    3. Matchmark the power steering gear assembly and the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly.
    4. Separate the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the power steering gear assembly.

  4. Remove the bolts and remove the power steering gear assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the steering gear assembly to its mounting position. Install the 2 bolts, washers and 2 nuts and torque to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm).
  2. Reconnect the ground wire and other wiring connectors.
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Tie rods to the steering knuckles and the nuts. Tighten the nut to 50 ft. lbs. (65 Nm) and install a new cotter pin. The prongs of the cotter pin should be firmly wrapped around the flats of the nut.
    Steering sliding yoke sub-assembly to the power steering gear assembly by aligning the matchmarks. Torque the 2 bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    Front lower suspension member protector
    No. 2 engine under cover
    Engine under cover
    Front wheels
    Negative battery cable

  4. Inspect and adjust front wheel alignment.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds before working on the vehicle to disarm the air bag.
    Front wheels
    Left and right front fender apron seals
    Cotter pin and nut holding the steering knuckle to the tie rod end. Using a tie rod puller, disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.

  3. Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and the control valve shaft.
  4. Loosen the upper bolt and remove the lower bolt holding the control valve shaft to the intermediate shaft. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from steering rack housing.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Tube clamp
    Return line and the pressure line from the control valve housing
    4 stabilizer bar bolts and 2 nuts. Position the stabilizer bar out of the way. Do NOT remove the sway bar from the vehicle.
    Heated Oxygen (HO 2 ) sensor (bank 1 sensor 1)
    2 steering gear mounting bolts and nuts. Remove the steering gear through the left side of the vehicle.


To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear on the vehicle and install the 2 mounting bolts and nuts. Tighten the nuts and bolts to 134 ft. lbs. (181 Nm).
    HO 2 sensor. Tighten the sensor to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
    Stabilizer bar bolts and nuts and tighten as follows: Bolts: 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm); Nuts: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
    Pressure and return lines and tighten the connectors to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
    Tube clamp and tighten the nut to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
    Intermediate shaft to the steering rack and tighten the retaining bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
    Tie rods to the steering knuckles with the castellated nuts. Tighten the nut to 36 ft. lbs. and install a new cotter pin. The prongs of the cotter pin should be firmly wrapped around the flats of the nut.
    Front fender apron seals by installing the 2 bolts
    Front wheels and lower the vehicle
    Power steering fluid
    Negative battery cable

  2. Release the steering wheel
  3. Bleed the system
  4. Check for leaks, adjust the toe-in and check the steering wheel center point

  6. Match-mark and remove tie rod assemblies

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Tie rod assemblies. Align match marks
    Oil feed tubes
    Rack & Pinion gear assembly with 4 set bolts; torque to 48 ft. lbs (65 Nm)
    Steering sliding yoke assembly
    Pressure and return tubes
    Tie rod assemblies to lower ball joint; torque to 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm)
    Brake calipers
    Front suspension member braces
    Engine under cover
    Center spiral cable
    Temporarily tighten steering wheel assembly
    Center steering wheel and fully tighten set nut
    Horn button
    Steering wheel covers
    Steering pad modulator switch
    Negative battery cable
    Bleed power steering system
    Front wheels

  2. Inspect toe in and adjust as necessary
  3. Test drive

  4. Remove Rack & Pinion Assembly
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Tube clamps on rack assembly
    Connector assembly
    2 bolts and 2 nuts
    Steering gear

  6. Power steering rack housing heat insulator
  7. Right & Left turn pressure tubes from the rack assembly
  8. Match-mark and remove tie rod assemblies

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Tie rod assemblies. Align match marks
    Oil feed tubes
    Steering rack heat insulator
    Rack and pinion gear assembly with 2 bolts and 2 nuts; torque to 52 ft. lbs (70 Nm)
    Pressure and return tubes
    Front stabilizer brackets
    Front stabilizer link assembly
    Steering intermediate shaft
    Tie rod assemblies to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm)
    Center spiral cable
    Temporarily tighten steering wheel assembly
    Center steering wheel and fully tighten set nut
    Horn button
    Steering wheel covers
    Steering pad modulator switch
    Negative battery cable
    Bleed power steering system
    Front wheels

  2. Inspect toe in and adjust as necessary
  3. Test drive
