How to Remove the Fuel Filter on 1999 Chevy Malibu?

The Chevrolet Malibu uses an inline fuel filter located by the front driver's side door. The fuel filter is responsible for separating any debris and sediment from the gasoline before it reaches the engine.

  • Open the hood to access the engine compartment. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery with a crescent wrench to isolate the electric fuel pump.

  • Open the fuel bay door. Unscrew the gas cap to remove any pressure in the fuel system.

  • Locate the fuel tank underneath the back of the car. Trace the fuel line to the filter located along the path of the fuel line. The fuel filter will be located under the driver's door.

  • Disconnect the inlet line by separating the tabs on the quick-disconnect fitting then pulling away from the fuel filter.

  • Unbolt the outlet end of the fuel filter with a crescent wrench. Pull the line away from the filter when it is detached.

  • Unbolt the mounting bracket with a socket wrench. Pull the filter away from the car.
