How to test reverse light switch on car?

PLEASE HELP.
REVERSE LIGHT ON MY CAR IS WORKING INTERMITTENTLY.
MY FRIEND WHO IS SOMEWHAT MECHANIC,TOLD ME ITS PROBLEM WITH REVERSE LIGHT SWITCH.
IS THERE ANY PROCEDURE TO CONFIRM THE PROBLEM.
CAN I TEST THE SWITCH?

YES,you can test the switch.


The procedure is as follows :---


1) Remove the electrical connector of the switch, and using a jumper wire or paper clip.
2) Then connect the two terminals on the connector. 
3) now turn your ignition switch on and check your reverse lights. 
4) If they light up, then the problem is with your switch or internal to the transmission. 
5) If the reverse lights do NOT come on, you have a different problem (power supply problem, ground problem, etc).
