Dodge Stratus Transmission Shifting Issues

Transmission Shifting Problems

It just bumps when shifting sometimes at various speeds. No check engine light. Had trans serviced at 45,000 ago. Doesn't do it all the time. Is it ok to drive or is trans fixing to quit on me?

The Problem occurs mostly when slowing down, it was serviced at the Dodge dealership.. nothing has been added.. it has been happening for maybe 5,000 miles.. but now just about does it every time I drive it.

Expert's Reply:

If it's happening when slowing down then it is most likely a clutch volume index that is too high.

Have you recently checked the fluid level, with the engine running and trans in park? The root cause is often low fluid level.

As per the problem described, it sounds like the bumping is harsh downshifting due to a clutch volume index (CVI) being too high.
The transmission control module (TCM) controls shift firmness through manipulation of the CVI's.
If a CVI is higher then more fluid is being applied and the shift will be firmer, a lower CVI uses less fluid and the shift is smoother.

Is This Common Problem?

It's not uncommon for the under drive CVI to climb too high because of lack of prime from sitting, an internal leak in the trans, or low fluid. If the car sat for a longer period of time that could be contributing to the problem.

Any Other Possibility For Such Problem To Occur?

It's also possible for clutch seal leakage to cause a CVI to climb too high but that would often come with harsh or chattering upshifts, which you haven't mentioned.

Any Important Suggestion From Where To Start The Troubleshooting?

At this point the first thing I would recommend is having it quick learned  This is done with a scan tool and only takes a few minutes. A quick learn sets the CVI's back to a baseline and let's them adapt correctly again.

Any Important Note Regarding Part Replacement?

You will also want to consider having the fluid changed again. The TCM software relies on specific frictional properties of the fluid to be able to correctly apply the clutches. Worn or incorrect fluid will cause problems with shift feel and could cause the CVI's to climb.
The maximum interval for trans fluid replacement on your car is 60,000 miles with 30,000 miles being recommended, so with it being 45,000 miles since the last replacement and the fact that you're having problems I would recommend doing it again along with the quicklearn.

From Where Should I Get This Job Done?

If you go to a dealer you shouldn't have to worry, but if it's done at another shop be sure that ATF+4 is the fluid used and no additives are put into the fluid.

Thanks.

How To Reset Oil Change Indicator?

The oil change reminder is easy to reset.

The Simple procedure Is As follows:---------

Turn the key on without starting the engine. Press the accelerator to the floor and release it three times within ten seconds and then turn the key off. This will reset the oil life monitor. Oil life is calculated based on driving conditions so this monitor will be more accurate than going by a sticker based on mileage.

Why This Oil Service Message Is Indicated? What's The Exact Reason for This message On Overhead Display?

The perform service message is displayed when routine maintenance is needed. On the 6.7 engine when the perform service message is displayed it is time to clean the EGR valve, EGR cooler, and replace the closed crankcase ventilation filter on top of the valve cover.

Ok,But How To Reset The Maintenance Monitor?

To reset the maintenance monitor you will need to turn the key on, press and release the brake pedal twice, then press and release the accelerator twice, and then turn the key off.

Ok,And What About Engine Light Flashing 10 Times On Dash?

I Will Say Its Not To Worry Issue. The flash code feature went away on Chrysler products after the 1996 model year so the flashing engine light you are seeing isn't anything to be concerned with. The status of the engine light is now used for emissions test readiness monitoring.

Suppose if you turn the key ON and

  • The light flashes that means all monitors have not ran and passed since the last memory reset.
  • If the light goes out that means monitors have ran and no codes are stored,
  • If the light stays on constantly then that means codes are stored.
Still i suggest to get your vehicle ECM scanned. If there is any other problem, the error code will show.
  • Since your engine light is staying off and nothing shows up with a scan tool you know no codes are stored.

OK,How To Deal With The EGR Cooler And The EGR Valve?
Should I clean Them Or Replace The Parts Directly?

  6. WIF Sensor
  7. CCV Drain Lines
  8. Fuel Pump
  9. EGR Airflow Control Valve
  10. EGR Valve
They need to be removed for the cleaning.

Ok,Where Are This Parts located?
The valve is over on the left side on the air intake. On the top, front of the engine you'll see the round metal tube going from one side of the engine to the other, this goes to the EGR valve over on the left side. The valve is held to the air intake with four 10mm bolts. To clean the valve it would need to be removed and then a solution of Mopar EGR cleaner and water mixed up is used to clean the inside of the valve.

Ok,And Where Is The EGR Cooler Unit Located?

The EGR cooler is the large unit mounted to the top of the exhaust manifold on the right side of the engine. It has a two bolt flange all the way in the back where the exhaust flows in, it flows through the cooler, through the cooler bypass valve, and then it connects to the EGR tube I mentioned. The cooler would need to be removed, one end of it sealed off and a mixture of the EGR cleaner is used to fill the cooler and let it sit, then it gets rinsed out with hot water to remove soot buildup.

Ok,and How To Replace Crankcase Filter?

To replace the crankcase filter you would need to remove the small cover on the top/front of the engine, the coil cap, and then the plastic cover on the top of the valve cover.
There are about eight 8mm bolts to remove, the cover comes off and the filter can be lifted out and replaced.

Expert's Reply:

Is It Faulty Gauge Or Its Oil Pressure Problem?

You've got a gauge issue rather than an actual oil pressure problem. Even if the pressure was truly at 80 when cold and accelerating, when the engine warms and especially at idle the pressure should drop much lower, to the lower end of the scale on the gauge. If the oil is full and you aren't hearing any abnormal noises from the engine then it clears that  actual oil pressure is ok.

Then What's The Actual Problem?

What you are experiencing are common symptoms of a failed oil pressure sending unit on a 4.0 engine. The oil sender threads into the right side of the engine block in the rear and receives pressurized oil from the engine, interprets that into an electrical signal and sends the information to the powertrain control module. It then sends that to the instrument cluster for gauge operation.

Is It Common Problem On These Model Vehicles?

When the sender on a 4.0 fails it usually does so in the way you have described, oil pressure will show about 80 PSI all the time no matter what. I believe you would find that if you turned the key on without even starting the engine it would still show the 80 PSI. If so then you could unplug the sender and see if the gauge drops. If so then you know the wiring is good and the sender itself is the problem.

Ok,How To Replace Oil Sender Unit?

Replacing it just involves unplugging the connector and threading the old one out of the engine block. It's best removed with a socket but you may be able to grab onto it with some good adjustable pliers.
For your information the original sender have a hex for a large socket (It is some what 1 3/16") and the replacement sender will likely have a standard oil sender hex which requires a special oil sender socket like the one shown here:

jeep Cherokee oil sender

The exact design of the replacement will depend on what brand it is and where you purchase it from. Again you might be able to use adjustable pliers if you have some that are large enough and will grip it tightly, but it is easiest to use a socket.

Expert's Reply:

A car radiator leaks because either the radiator hose is punctured or the radiator drain plug O-ring is damaged.

As per the problem mentioned it's definitely possible that the drain plug could be leaking. The plug is plastic and it should have two O rings on it. Design will vary a little bit if the van has had a replacement radiator at some point, but either way it should have at least one O ring, usually two.

Any other possibilities other then faulty drain plug?

It's not unlikely that the plug is leaking but there are other things in the area that can leak too. The upper radiator hose is on that side, and although it's higher, it could leak down to the drain plug area. If the radiator side tank seal or the radiator itself was leaking it could also be wet in the same area.

Why Coolant is Seen Leaking?
If the plug was leaking the coolant would be coming out from around it or from the small drain tube directly under it. If that's where it is coming from and the other areas look ok then go ahead and drain the coolant and remove the plug.

Any more Details About Drain Plug Replacement?

Please Note:

You should turn off the engine of your car and wait until the engine cools down completely before you can work on its cooling system.

The plug is plastic and sometimes the threads no longer hold it tight enough to seal. You may find the threads on it are damaged when it is removed.
If you take the plug to a parts store or dealer they'll be able to get you a replacement plug or replacement O rings. The most common thing to do would be to replace the entire plug, which is only a few dollars. I've tried to match up O rings in the past to just replace the rings and not the plugs, and the O rings are often slightly bigger or smaller than the ones you can buy in bulk.

This Details  Will Help.
Thanks.
