Jeep WJ Grand Cherokee: 2002 WJ Limited 4.7L. Sentry Key light

Grand Cherokee 2002 WJ Limited 4.7L. Sentry Key light comes on for lamp check. Turns off for about 2 seconds then comes on and stays on. WJ will not start. I do not hear the fuel pump prime.

Sentry key theft deterrent system :Sentry key immobilizer system.

Already tries Replacing battery and corroded cables. Neither key will work, original keys.

Also tried reprogram both original keys with proper scan tool and pin. SentryKey light would reset then once scantool was unplugged would come back on within 10 seconds.

What is the possibly PCM? SKIM? Keys?
Vehicle Details:

Experts Troubleshooting Details For This Problem:

Function Of Sentry Key:
The Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS) prevents unauthorized operation of the vehicle by disabling the engine. The system will shut the engine down after 2 seconds of running if an invalid key is used to start the vehicle.

Can Be Fault With Keys:
If the problem started happening with both keys at one time then it's unlikely to be a key issue. Both keys going faulty together at once is very rare.

To Start Troubleshooting:
The first thing that needs to be done is see what fault codes are setting in the PCM and SKIM module. It's possible that there could be a bus communication problem between the two preventing the SKIM from sending an OK to run message to the PCM. There have been some problems on these with wiring, grounds, internal module issues and such that will take down communication.

The immobilizer module is located on the steering column, close to the ignition, where the key goes in. Remove the 2 column covers (upper and lower) to access it. Has one screw on the bottom.

pin 1 should have battery power at all times
pin 2 should have ground at all times
pin 3 should have battery power when the key is ON
pin 5 is PCI bus....about 1 or 2 volts with the key on

Jeep Cherokee PCM:
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is located in the right-rear side of the engine compartment.

Either Module Or Communication Problem:
If communication is ok then it's either going to be a bad SKIM module or the PCM, most likely the SKIM. There are going to be fault codes set that will aid in diagnosis. If the SENTRY KEY LIGHT is staying on solid rather than flash then most likely it's either the module itself or a communication problem.

CUSTOMERS COMMENT:

"The Jeep dealer wants $100 to troubleshoot. There is no check engine light so I assume there are no codes to be read through ODBII. I know I can turn the key on and off 3 or 4 times to get the codes. I attempted this but nothing showed on the odometer, I did not get the "done" so not sure if I did it correctly."

Expert's Reply:

Please Note:
Just for your information, The check engine light never has to be on for fault codes to be set, and SKIM related codes won't turn on the light. The engine light will only come on for emissions related problems with codes set in the PCM and not any of the other 12-15 modules on the vehicle. Yes there are many other modules in your jeep vehicle.

Other issue:
Cycling the key will bring up most of the codes the PCM can set, but again nothing from any other modules. If you didn't see the odometer change when cycling the key then it wasn't done just right, you'd see the odometer change either way even if no codes were stored.

My Suggestion:
The dealer should be able to diagnose and repair it with no problems. Correctly repairing the problem is going to require a DRBIII scan tool so the dealer is most likely where it would have to end up if you wanted to repair it.Because local auto repair garages will not have this tool.

If In case its SKIM module issue then ..............
Defeating SKIM would take some custom programming in a few modules as well as disabling some components. If you've found a company that will do that and no longer want the SKIM option that's one way you could go. It's much more than just telling the PCM that SKIM isn't there.

Without required scan tool confirming the exact problem is very difficult.Getting it inspect at dealer is advisable.
