2005 pt cruiser Instrument panel and dome lights not working but after resetting battery they stay on for a few days

It sounds like the failure is most likely in the instrument cluster itself but it could be a wiring issue.
REASON FOR THE PROBLEM:
The dome lamps are controlled by the instrument cluster. They receive a ground and the instrument cluster supplies the power for them to operate. It's possible that the cluster could be seeing current draw on the dome lamp circuit going too high due to a short to ground somewhere in the circuit. If it sees current draw go too high it will set a fault code and disable the lamps to preserve itself from damage. Disconnecting the battery would clear the code and allow the lamps to work again until the short came back.
ANOTHER POSSIBILITY FOR INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FAILURE:
The cluster is also the source of the illumination when the lamps are turned on. It receives an input from the headlamp switch, turns it's own illumination on, and also powers the radio, a/c control head illumination, etc. Again the illumination not working until the battery is disconnected could be high current draw in the circuit setting a fault code or it could be the cluster itself. If the illumination and dome lamps act up at exactly the same time each time then it's very much possible that instrument cluster is faulty.
FROM WHERE TO START TROUBLESHOOTING:
The first get inspected what fault codes are setting in the cluster. Disconnecting the battery will clear the codes, so if you're going to have a shop diagnose the problem you'll want to leave the lights in an inoperative state and not disconnect the battery to erase the codes. A sure diagnosis would probably require some electrical testing to be done at the time the lights initially go out, but if both sets of lights go out and then come back at exactly the same time it sounds like the cluster is going to need to be replaced.
