Chrysler Town & Country OBD Codes P0700 and P0740

2001 Chrysler Town & Country has 163000 miles with no problems with the transmission shows OBD codes P0700 and a P0740

P0700 sets in the power-train control module (PCM) when there is a fault code stored in the transmission control module (TCM). Do you happen to know what trans codes are set?

HOW TO RETRIEVE OTHER CODES:

You wouldn't need a specialist or a trans shop to read the trans codes. They'll need to be read with a scan tool or code reader. I'm assuming that you found the P0700 by cycling the key on and off which will read codes from the engine controller but not from the trans controller.

If you don't have a scan tool or code reader of your own you can have the codes read for free at most large parts stores like Autozone.

P0740 sets when the torque converter clutch either doesn't lock up when commanded or slips excessively.

In the front of the converter there is a disc clutch that is turned on at times to give a mechanical lock between the engine and transmission, it drops engine RPM's about 200 in cruise situations and raises fuel mileage a little.

WHAT ARE POSSIBLE REPAIR OPTIONS:

Repair options are going to depend on how it has failed.

It's possible that incorrect or degraded fluid can cause this. The software requires a specific frictional property of the fluid to work correctly, if there is a fluid additive in it, a fluid other than ATF+4, or the fluid is very worn then flushing the trans with some fresh ATF+4 could take care of the issue.

ANY OTHER POSSIBILITY FOR THE PROBLEM:

It could also be a failure of the converter itself.

Sometimes when the converter clutch fails it will put clutch material debris into the pan and it circulates around the trans and can cause other problems. Dropping the pan and inspecting for this debris will tell if this has happened. If there is a large amount of debris in the pan and it has been circulating in the trans then there will deeper transmission issues down the road.

It's possible that the converter simply isn't locking up and hasn't produced debris, which does sometimes happen. If the pan doesn't show debris then just replacing the torque converter will be ok and the trans wouldn't have to be replaced or overhauled.

COST OF NEW TRANSMISSION IS TOO MUCH:
A used transmission would be another option that's cheaper than a remanufactured one or a rebuild, should it come to that.

If you aren't having any perceived symptoms then you could drive it as is and see what happens. If the converter isn't producing debris then the only thing that would happen is the engine light would stay on.

This details will help.
Thanks.
