Jeep grand cherokee 0 oil pressure

Oil Pressure Shows Zero On Gauges

Check gauges light. 0 oil pressure on gauge. No big oil leak, good oil level. cycled ignition few more times, then gauge starts to move. Goes up to 80 (max line) and stays there.

Vehicle Details:

Make (manufacturer): jeep
Model: grand Cherokee 6cyl 2001 Laredo
Year: 2001

Expert's Reply:

Is It Faulty Gauge Or Its Oil Pressure Problem?

You've got a gauge issue rather than an actual oil pressure problem. Even if the pressure was truly at 80 when cold and accelerating, when the engine warms and especially at idle the pressure should drop much lower, to the lower end of the scale on the gauge. If the oil is full and you aren't hearing any abnormal noises from the engine then it clears that  actual oil pressure is ok.

Then What's The Actual Problem?

What you are experiencing are common symptoms of a failed oil pressure sending unit on a 4.0 engine. The oil sender threads into the right side of the engine block in the rear and receives pressurized oil from the engine, interprets that into an electrical signal and sends the information to the powertrain control module. It then sends that to the instrument cluster for gauge operation.

Is It Common Problem On These Model Vehicles?

When the sender on a 4.0 fails it usually does so in the way you have described, oil pressure will show about 80 PSI all the time no matter what. I believe you would find that if you turned the key on without even starting the engine it would still show the 80 PSI. If so then you could unplug the sender and see if the gauge drops. If so then you know the wiring is good and the sender itself is the problem.

Ok,How To Replace Oil Sender Unit?

Replacing it just involves unplugging the connector and threading the old one out of the engine block. It's best removed with a socket but you may be able to grab onto it with some good adjustable pliers.
For your information the original sender have a hex for a large socket (It is some what 1 3/16") and the replacement sender will likely have a standard oil sender hex which requires a special oil sender socket like the one shown here:

The exact design of the replacement will depend on what brand it is and where you purchase it from. Again you might be able to use adjustable pliers if you have some that are large enough and will grip it tightly, but it is easiest to use a socket.

Oil light beeps when the engine is warm

Oil Light Issues And Engine Getting Warm

The Details About the Problem:

1997 Plymouth Grand Voyager  just bought with about 120K miles. The engine oil light beeps when the engine is warm.
The oil was recently replaced and it still happens.

Troubleshooting Details For The Problem

It's quite possible that there is actual low oil pressure due to an internal engine issue, but if you aren't hearing any abnormal engine noises that's probably not the case.

But as per your vehicle details, at our Auto Garage repair store one thing that often happens is a failed oil pressure sending unit. This is the sensor that is fed oil pressure and reports it to the powertrain control module. What often happens is the membrane inside the sensor will rupture and then it allows oil to leak through the sensor and into the electrical connector and it causes the oil light to come on at stops when hot, when oil pressure is naturally at it's lowest anyway.

To take care of these problem i suggest you to first  unplug the oil sender and see if there is oil in the connector. If there is then it will need to be cleaned out and the sender replaced.

If  you notice there is no leakage  then a manual oil pressure gauge can be used to check actual oil pressure. If pressure is ok when the engine is hot, idling in gear then the sender will need to be replaced.

If pressure is found to actually be low then you could have an oil pump or bearing issue in the engine.

Getting these possibilities inspected will help.
Thanks.

Is it possible for oil to leak due to faulty Knock Sensor

OIL LEAKING DUE TO KNOCK SENSOR

Its very rare for oil leaking due to knock sensor.

Common Causes of Car Oil Leaks?

Avenger Leaks oil while driving, mechanic suggested faulty Knock sensor ............

I doubt proper inspection is done, as per our garage repair experience, its very rare for such problem.

There's no way oil should be leaking from the knock sensor.

Why because?
The location of Knock sensor is under intake.
The knock sensor simply threads into a shallow hole in the engine block under the intake area.
And its a closed sensor. The end of the sensor isn't open, and there would never be any oil in the whole in the first place unless there was a problem with the engine block itself. If that was the case then the oil would be coming out from the sensor threads, not the sensor.
So first get the sensor threads inspected. If you notice oil getting accumulated there and then forming a leak, then its engine block issue, but not Knock sensor issue.Get help from another auto mechanic.

As per our car repair experience and dealing with such issues the problem in these case is the oil pressure sending unit.
Why oil pressure sending unit?

These has a reason!

  • The oil sender threads into the back of the engine block.
  • Like how knock sensor is close at its end the oil sender is open to a passage with pressurized oil to be able to monitor pressure.
  • Why will oil get into knock sensor with out any engine failure issue noticed, but Oil actually goes into the sensor and presses against a diaphragm to create the pressure signal.
  • As we at our auto repair garage have actually repaired and dealt with such issues. So on that basis i will say that, what actually  happens  is the diaphragm ruptures and allows oil to enter the sensor and then it will leak from the sensor's electrical connector. And these is what exactly happening in your case.
This isn't an uncommon issue.

Hope these details help you.

Thanks.
