- Remove or disconnect the following:
Negative battery cable
NOTE
Wait at least 90 seconds before working on the vehicle to allow the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) system to disarm.
Right and left side fender apron sealsRight and left tie rod ends
- Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Pinch bolt and the intermediate shaft out from under the vehiclePower steering line clampPressure and feed linesStabilizer bar, unbolt it but do not remove itHeated Oxygen (HO2) sensorBoth gear assembly set bolts and nuts, by lifting the stabilizer barGear assembly from the left side of the vehicle
To install:
- Install or connect the following:
Gear assembly to the left side of the vehicle
WARNING
Be careful not to damage the power steering lines.
Tighten the gear assembly set bolts and nuts to 134 ft. lbs. (181 Nm), by lifting the stabilizer barHO2 sensorStabilizer bar. Tighten the bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm) and the nut to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).Pressure and feed return lines. Tighten them to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).Line clamps. Tighten the nut to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).Intermediate shaft, by aligning the joint and main shaft matchmarks. Tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).Tie rod endsFender apron seals. Securely tighten the bolts.

- Remove or disconnect the following:
Steering wheel padSteering wheel - Position the front wheels facing straight-ahead. Do this with the front of the vehicle on jackstands.
- Center the spiral cable.
- Install the steering wheel at the straight-ahead position. Temporarily tighten the wheel set nut. Attach the wiring.
- Bleed the power steering system.
- Check the steering wheel center point. Tighten the steering nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
- Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.
- Place the wheels in a straight-ahead position.
- Remove the wheels.
- Matchmark and remove the intermediate shaft from the gear.
- Remove the steering column hole cover from the dash panel.
- Disconnect the tie rod ends.
- Disconnect the stabilizer bar.
- Disconnect the pressure and return lines.
- Remove the 2 gear mounting bolts.
- Matchmark the intermediate shaft extension and control valve shaft.
- Remove the intermediate shaft extension bolt and remove the gear.
To install:
- Place the gear in position. Align the matchmarks and connect the intermediate extension shaft. Torque to 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
- Install the column cover plate and clamp.
- Install the gear mounting bolts. Torque to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
- Connect the stabilizer bar. Torque to 12 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
- Connect the tie rods ends. Torque to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
- Connect the intermediate shaft. Torque to 26 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
- Check the alignment.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
