How to replace timing belt on 1991 ford probe?

Timing Belt

The timing belt should be replaced every 60,000 miles. Failure to replace the belt may result in damage to the engine.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

2.2L Engine
  1. Bring the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke for No. 1 piston. The notch on the crankshaft damper should align with the TDC mark on the front cover.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the drive belts, crankshaft pulley and the timing belt covers.
  4. Remove the timing belt tensioner spring and retaining bolt. Remove the idler pulley retaining bolt.
  5. If the timing belt is to be reused, mark the direction of rotation so it can be reinstalled in the same direction.
  6. Remove the timing belt.
To install:
  1. Align the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets with the marks on the cylinder head and the oil pump housing, as shown in Fig. 2.
  2. Install the timing belt. If reusing the old belt, observe the direction of rotation mark made during the removal procedure.
  3. Place the timing belt tensioner and spring in position. Temporarily secure the tensioner with the spring fully extended. Make sure the timing belt is installed so there is no looseness at the water pump pulley at the idler side.
  4. Loosen the idler bolt. Turn the crankshaft twice in the direction of rotation; align the timing marks.

WARNING
Always turn the crankshaft in the correct direction of rotation only. If the crankshaft is turned in the opposite direction, the timing belt may lose tension and correct belt timing may be lost.

  1. Check to see that the timing marks are correctly aligned. If they are not aligned, remove the timing belt and align the timing marks, then repeat Steps 8-11.
  2. Tighten the tensioner bolt to 27-38 ft. lbs. (37-52 Nm).
  3. Measure the belt deflection between the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys. The correct deflection should be 0.30-0.33 (7.5-8.5mm) at 22 ft. lbs. (98 Nm) of pressure. If the deflection is not correct, loosen the tensioner bolt and repeat Steps 10 and 11.
  4. Install the timing belt covers, crankshaft pulley and drive belts.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
