REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
E30 3 Series
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the lower dash trim from under the steering column.
- Pull out the ashtray from the rear of the console. Remove the screw underneath. Pull the console back and off the brake lever. Disconnect the wiring.
- Pull the manual transmission shift knob off the shift lever. Pull the shifter boot up and off. On automatic equipped vehicles unclip the trim on the right side of the shifter. Remove the screws exposed.
- Pull out and disconnect the window switches.
- Remove the screws from the forward ashtray console and lift out. Disconnect the wiring for the lighter.
- Remove the bolts below the heater controls. Rotate the retainers on the sides of the consoles to release. Pull the console out.
- Install in reverse order.
- Remove the ashtray, cover and the hazard switch.
- Remove the console and glove compartment.
- Remove the lower dash trim. Remove the gear shifter handle and the clock.
- Remove the center console.
- Install in reverse order.
- Remove the trim from under the steering column.
- Remove the rear trim plate and disconnect the wires. Remove the screws from underneath.
- Pull out the cassette holder, if equipped, and disconnect the wiring for the lights.
- Remove the brake lever boot and the screw in the compartment next to the lever.
- Remove the switches and disconnect the wiring. Remove the screw. Pull off the manual gear shift knob or remove the screw from the automatic transmission shifter and remove.
- Remove the center cover from the console horizontal section. Remove the radio and pull out the heater controls.
- Disconnect the clips and screws. Remove the console.
- Install in reverse order.
HOW to remove the instrument cluster?
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
E30 3 Series
- Remove the lower dash trim from under the steering column.
- Remove the trim from above the steering column.
- Remove the 2 screws from the top of the instrument panel hood and the 4 screws from below. Note the positions of the screws as they are different lengths.
- Remove the screws from the instrument cluster and pull forward. Pull the clip off the plug and disconnect from the cluster.
- Install in reverse order.
If the instrument cluster is disconnected from the harness, the cluster must be recoded using the BMW Diagnostic Tester or equivalent. Arrange to have the cluster recoded.
- Remove the steering wheel.
- Remove the screws from the instrument cluster at the top.
- Pull the instrument cluster forward. Push the levers up to disconnect the harness.
- Install in reverse order.
- Remove the steering wheel.
- Remove the screws from the instrument cluster at the top.
- Pull the instrument cluster forward. Push the levers up to disconnect the harness.
- Install in reverse order.

How to remove radio and its components:----
1) Radio power antenna removal:---
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
- Remove the trim panel at the antenna location. The rear light cover may need to be removed.
- Disconnect the antenna mounting bracket. Unplug the wiring.
- Loosen and remove the mounting nut at the body hole, if equipped. Pull the antenna out of the opening.
- Install the antenna and the mounting nut at the body hole. Install the mounting bracket and connect the wiring. Install the trim panel.
2) Power antenna mast removal:---
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
- Turn the radio ON to extend the mast as far as it will go.
- Remove the nut at the base of the mast. Pull the mast out of the antenna assembly. A firm pull may be necessary.
- Install the new mast cable end into the opening and turn the radio OFF to draw the mast into the housing. Guide the mast and cable into the housing.
- Install the nut and operate the antenna several times to check the operation.
3) Radio receiver unit removal:---
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Make note of the radio code supplied on a tag with the owners information. As an antitheft feature the code must be entered into the radio once power has been removed.
- Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
- Insert radio removal hooks into the holes at the sides of the radio chassis. Seat the hooks and pull the radio out. Disconnect the plugs.
- If not equipped with holes at the sides of the chassis, pull the knob off and insert the hooks at the holes at the cassette opening and pull out.
- If equipped with screws at the edges of the chassis mounted at an angle, remove the screws and pull the chassis out.
- Connect the plugs and place the radio in the opening. Snap into place or install the angled screws.
- Enter the radio code to activate the radio.
4) Radio speaker removal:---

Rear Speakers
- Remove the grills by removing the screws, if equipped, or pulling up.
- Remove the speaker mounting screws and the speakers. Disconnect the wires.
- On convertibles, pull the door handle release trim off and pull the speaker grill up and off.
- Connect the wires and install the speakers in the cutouts. Install the screws and grills.
- Remove the grills by removing the screws, if equipped, or pulling up and prying out.
- Remove the speaker mounting screws and the speakers. Disconnect the wires.
- Connect the wires and install the speakers in the cutouts. Install the screws and grills.
- Remove the hood release lever on the left side and remove the kick panel trim. On E34 5 Series, remove the door seal and turn the screws 90 degrees. Pull the panel out and to the rear to remove.
- Remove the screws and wires from the speakers and remove.
- Connect the wires and install the speakers in the cutouts. Install the screws and kick panels.
