how to install vinyl top on vw rabbit 1984 model and how to remove old convertible top?

FIRST HOW TO REMOVE ORIGINAL TOP:----

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1 and 2

Removing and installing the convertible top from the frame requires special tools and adhesives, and also requires cutting the top fabric. The job is best left to a well equipped body shop with convertible top experience. The procedure described here is for removing the top and frame together as an assembly. Installation requires two people.

  1. Open the top to release the tension, but don't fold it back yet.
  2. Bend open the metal tabs under the luggage compartment lining and pull the headliner off the tabs.

Fig. Fig. 1: The convertible top frame can be removed with the cover still attached

  1. Pull the rear window defogger wiring out of the window seal.
  2. Remove the window frame hinges and pull the cover off.
  3. Remove the trim pieces at the rear corner of the rear windows.
  4. On manual tops, remove the bolt to release the tension on the gas pressurized strut. Remove the clip at the other end and remove the strut.
  5. If equipped with a power top, disconnect the cylinder from the top frame.
  6. Disconnect the tensioning wire from its anchor on each side. A 4mm open end wrench can be used to prevent the wire from twisting.

  1. Peel the top cover and tensioning wire out of the channels on the sides, then out of the rear channel.
  2. Remove the headliner at the rear corners and remove the belt fastening bracket.
  3. Remove the trim pieces covering the main bearing hinge. Remove the three bolts on each side and remove the top as an assembly.

To install:
  1. Fit the top into place and start all the main bearing hinge bolts. When they are all started, tighten them.
  2. Attach the belt at the rear corners.
  3. Secure the tensioning wire to the anchors at each side and have a helper and top cover into the channel with a wooden drift.
  4. Carefully align the beading and drive that into place with the drift.
  5. Install the gas strut and try closing the top to make sure it fits properly and operates smoothly.
  6. Install the rear window frame.
  7. Attach the headliner and install the remaining trim pieces.

MOTOR REPLACEMENT

The top can be operated by hand, if necessary, by opening the valve on the pump. Turn the valve counterclockwise until it stops.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Unclip and remove the left side luggage trim panel.
  3. Disconnect the motor wiring.
  4. Loosen the filler plug to relieve the pressure. Have a rag handy to catch any fluid that may spill.
  5. Disconnect the hydraulic fittings that are accessible. Make sure the fittings are clean before disconnecting them and cover them with plastic or paper to keep dirt out. Do not use rags because the lint is enough to cause problems with the hydraulic system.
  6. Remove the mount bolts and remove the pump and disconnect the remaining hydraulic fittings.

To install:
  1. Connect any hydraulic fittings to the motor which will not be accessible when the pump is mounted.
  2. Connect the remaining hydraulic lines.
  3. Connect the motor wiring.
  4. Fill and bleed the hydraulic system.
  5. Install the luggage trim panel.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.

POWER TOP CYLINDERS

See Figures 3, 4 and 5

  1. Unclip and remove the left side luggage compartment trim.
  2. Bend the metal tabs and pull the top material up until the cylinders are visible.
  3. Remove the lockring and pin to disengage the pushrod from the frame.
  4. Unfasten the bracket nuts to remove the cylinder from the frame.

  1. Disconnect the hydraulic line and remove the cylinder. Make sure no dirt or lint gets into the hydraulic system. Use plastic or paper covers to protect the fittings.

To install:
  1. Secure the cylinder to the frame with the bracket nuts.
  2. Connect the hydraulic line to the cylinder.
  3. Engage the pushrod to the frame, then install the lockring and pin.
  4. Secure the top material.
  5. Fill and bleed the system.
  6. Install the luggage trim panel.

BLEEDING THE SYSTEM

See Figure 6

  1. Remove the left side luggage compartment trim panel.
  2. Turn the valve on the pump to the left (counterclockwise) until it stops.
  3. Open and close the top by hand twice, then open the top and leave it open.
  4. Close the valve (fully clockwise).
  5. Remove the filler plug and add hydraulic fluid as needed. Do not overfill.

The hydraulic fluid level must be checked with the top open. The level must be between the MIN and MAX marks.

the rear. Press down the entire seam with your hand to adhere the material to the roof.
