How to replace wheel bearings on Toyota Highlander
Disassembly
- Remove the inner seal from the hub.
- Remove the snap ring from the hub.
- Mount the knuckle in a vise and, using a slidehammer, remove the hub from the knuckle.
- Remove the outer seal.
- Using a press, the bearings and races can now be replaced.
- Replace the snap ring and seals.
- Press the knuckle onto the hub assembly.
Removal & Installation
- Remove the wheel.
- Remove the hub nut.
- Remove the caliper and suspend it out of the way.
- Remove the brake rotor.
- Disconnect the tie rod end from the knuckle.
- Disconnect the control arm from the ball joint.
- Remove the halfshaft from the knuckle.
- Remove the lower strut-to-knuckle bolts and remove the hub/knuckle assembly.
- Remove the ball joint.
To install:
- Install the ball joint. Torque to 91 ft. lbs. (123 Nm). Advance the nut as much as 60 degrees to align the cotter pin hole. Use a new cotter pin.
- Attach the knuckle assembly to the strut. Torque to 170 ft. lbs. (230 Nm).
- The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

- Remove the wheel.
- Remove the speed sensor from the axle carrier.
- Remove the axle shaft nut.
- Remove the caliper and support assembly and suspend it out of the way.
- Check the bearing backlash. It should not exceed 0.0020 in. (0.05mm). If it does, it must be replaced.
- Remove the 4 bolts and remove the hub/bearing assembly.
- Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

- Remove or disconnect the following:
- If the caliper is being replaced, disconnect the brake line and plug both openings.NOTEDepending on the brake type, there may be either 1 or 2 sealing washers.
- Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the slide pin to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm). If the brake hose was removed, torque the union bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
- Disconnect the brake line from the caliper and plug it.
- Remove the caliper mounting bolts.
- Lift off the caliper.
- Remove the pads and anti-squeal shims.
- Remove the wear indicators from each pad.
- Installation is the reverse of removal. Grease the caliper slides and bolts with lithium grease or equivalent. Apply disc brake grease to the anti-squeal shims. Torque the caliper bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm); the brake line union bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
- Disconnect the brake line from the caliper and plug it.
- Remove the caliper mounting bolts.
- Lift off the caliper.
- Remove the pads and anti-squeal shims.
- Remove the wear indicators from each pad.
- Installation is the reverse of removal. Grease the caliper slides and bolts with lithium grease or equivalent. Apply disc brake grease to the anti-squeal shims. Torque the caliper bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm); the brake line union bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).

- Raise and safely support the vehicle.
- Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly.
- Unbolt and remove the caliper, but do NOT disconnect the fluid line. Suspend the caliper from the suspension with a piece of wire.
- Remove the rotor.
- Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

You have to remove the tire first. Next, the caliper has to be slipped off the rotor then you can remove the rotor. Here is the steps for the caliper:
