Dodge Cummins 2500 Has Starting Issues

Dodge Cummins Hard To Start

98 Dodge cummins 24 valve, slow to start.

  • Batteries seemed weak.
  • Batteries on long cranks attempting to start.
  • When vehicle is jump start  heard clicking, then nothing.
Now, with charged batteries, no sound at all when I turn the key. Both batteries show 12.6 volts. When the key is turned the batteries drop to 11 and change while the grid heater and lift pump run, then pop back to 12+, but no drop when the key is turned to start.

Engine Cranks But Wont Start

For an engine to run, you require three factors to happen within the engine, compression, fuel and ignition, without any one of these factors the engine will not run.

What Is Compression - Engine compression triggered by crankshaft rotation and pistons moving up and down within the engine block. If the timing belt or timing chain fails it will cause the camshaft to become out of connection with the crankshaft or allow the camshaft to stop rotating. Either of these conditions will cause the engine to drop compression and sometimes cause inner engine damage.

Fuel Delivery System - The fuel system includes: fuel pump, fuel injectors, pressure regulator, fuel filter and pressure lines. This system is used to deliver fuel under pressure to the fuel injection system, the shortage of fuel pressure or volume will cause the fuel delivery system to fail and the engine to stall or not start.

Ignition Spark Delivery System - The ignition system components include: spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor (if applicable), crankshaft angle sensor, camshaft angle sensor, ignition coil, ignition module, knock sensor and PCM (powertrain control module). The engine is dependent on the ignition spark to be delivered to the combustion camber at the appropriate time. If the ignition spark quits or is supplied at the wrong time the engine will not run or run poorly.

Troubleshooting:

Check Starter Relay Fuse

It's very possible that the starter relay fuse blew. When the starters on these trucks started to fail and draw too much current it would cause the fuse to blow, sometimes intermittently at first.

Location Of Starter Relay Control Fuse:

The first thing you'll want to do is check fuse 2 in the power distribution center under the hood and hopefully it's blown. Swap in a known good fuse or check it with an ohm meter if possible if you can't see anything visibly wrong with it.

Confirm Wiring And Fuse Issue:

If it's blown then replace it, remove the small wire from the starter solenoid and turn the key to the crank position. If the fuse doesn't blow this way then you know there isn't a wiring issue, if it blows with the solenoid plugged in but not unplugged then the starter will need to be replaced.

This will help.
Thanks.
