How to Remove Timing Chain Cover and Seal on Toyota Previa?

The details and diagram below will guide you for this procedure.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds after the negative battery cable is disconnected before performing work on models equipped with an airbag.

Some models covered by this guide may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in Chassis Electrical .

  1. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
  2. Remove the cylinder head from the engine.
  3. Remove the crankshaft pulley and damper.
  4. Unbolt and remove the left engine mounting.
  5. Remove the oil pressure switch and engine ventilation case.
  6. Extract the engine oil dipstick. Remove the No. 2 engine hanger.
  7. If equipped, remove the crankshaft position sensor.
  8. Remove the 16 bolts and 2 nuts retaining the oil pan. To separate, insert a pry tool and carefully tap it with a brass bar.
  9. Remove the No. 2 oil dipstick guide and oil baffle plate.
  10. Remove the 3 bolts and oil filter bracket from the timing cover.
  11. Remove the 12 bolts, 2 nuts and timing cover.
There are 3 bolts located in back of the cover. Be careful not to damage the mating surfaces during removal.
To install:
  1. Before installing, clean all gasket surfaces and check for warpage.
  2. Install the timing chain cover using a new gasket. Tighten the following bolts:

    A-14 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
    B-21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
    C-32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm)
  3. Install the oil filter bracket and tighten to 14 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
  4. Install the crankcase baffle plate, oil pan, No. 1dipstick tube guide and ventilation case. Tighten the baffle plate to 43 inch lbs. (5 Nm), oil pan bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm), ventilation case to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm) and the No. 1 dipstick tube guide to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
  5. Attach the No. 2 engine hanger to the block and tighten to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  6. Ibnstall the engine oil dipstick and secure.
  7. Install the oil pressure switch, left engine mount and stay. Tighten the left engine mount bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm) and stay bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  8. Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolt to 192 ft. lbs. (260 Nm).
  9. Install the cylinder head and engine assembly into the vehicle.
  10. Install the remaining components and check for leaks.
Seal replacement
See Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4
There are two methods of replacing the oil seal depending on weather the oil pump cover is assembled to the engine or not.
If the oil pump is not installed to the timing chain case, use a flatbladed tool and rag to pry the old seal out. Apply multipurpose grease to the new oil seal lip. Using a seal installer, tap the seal into place.

If the oil pump is installed on the timing chain case, use a knife to cut off the lip of the seal and pry it out. Check the oil seal lip contact surface of the crankshaft for cracks or damage. Apply multi-purpose grease to the new oil seal lip. Using a seal installer, drive the new seal flush against the cover edge.
