Jeep Grand Cherokee Tailgate Window Will Not Open

TailGate Window Failure

Tailgate Works But Tailgate Window Will Not open

1998 Jeep grand Cherokee tsi: tailgate window button tested ok, tested plunger its good, the tailgate itself works fine auto and manual .
It seems there is no power to window switch. All other windows and doors work ok.

Troubleshooting:

First of all there is a separate fuse for this check that. The fuse for the liftgate glass solenoid is fuse 8 in the junction block, the fuse box inside. Let's start by checking the fuse.

If fuse is faulty blown, then replace the fuse with good one.
If fuse checked out ok then power to the solenoid has to be checked.

There are a couple things involved in powering the release solenoid.

First understand its theory.
Power leaves the fuse and travels to first to the liftgate latch. There is a limit switch in the liftgate latch that prevents the glass from opening while the liftgate is open. The limit switch has to be closed for power to flow to the switch.

So first check for power right at the release solenoid. You can either work from inside with the liftgate closed or you can open it and then use a screwdriver to close the latch pawl so it thinks that the gate is actually shut.

TESTING THE LIFTGATE WINDOW RELEASE SOLENOID:

To test you will need voltmeter or test light.
Either way, unplug the release solenoid and use a test light or voltmeter to check for power on the orange/brown wire. If you do find power is ok then make sure there is ground on the black wire. If you have tested the solenoid and it works then you're going to be missing power or ground, power is more likely.

TESTING THE LIFTGATE WINDOW RELEASE SWITCH:

If you find there is no power to the solenoid then next go to the release switch. Check for power on the orange/pink wire. If there is power  then check on the orange/brown wire. If there is power coming in on the orange/pink but not leaving on the orange/brown with the switch pressed then you know the switch is bad.

TESTING THE LIFTGATE LATCH:

If there is no power at the orange/pink wire then you'd next need to go to the liftgate latch and check for power on the pink/black wire. The pink/black wire is the one that comes from the fuse. If there is power on the pink/black but not on the orange/pink wire then the switch in the latch is bad.

CONCLUSIONS:

If there is no power on the pink/black wire at the latch then you've got a wiring problem in between the fuse and the latch.

How To Locate Wiring Breakage?

One of the most common places to find wiring breaks is in the boot between the liftgate and the body. This is where the wiring harness from the liftgate runs into the body to connect to the main harness. Each time you open and close the liftgate this wiring flexes and can eventually break. Many a times the wire get pinched and form a crack in between. Also sometimes there is dirt or dust layer got formed inside micro switches and latch assembly and this causes problem in connections and closing. So properly clean this dirty areas and that will definitely help to take care of such issues.

Thanks.

Tailgate will not open

Dodge Tailgate lock

  • How can I open a locked liftgate on a 2004 Dodge Durango Limited. All the other door lock actuators can be heard engaging. The is no engage/disengage sound coming from the liftgate. Liftgate is in the closed/locked position.

  • Rear hatch on  Dodge durango will not open.

Vehicle Details:

Make: Durango
Model: Dodge
Year: 2004

Already Tried:
pressing unlock a gillion times. kicking the door from inside and having some one pull the handle from the outside. Using the key but it won't turn in the lock.

THINGS YOU CAN TRY:

See the help diagram of tailgate assembly removal:

tailgate panel

MOST POSSIBLE REASONS FOR THIS:

This could be a wiring or instrument cluster problem but it's most likely a failed lock actuator, which is an integral part of the door latch.

THINGS YOU CAN TRY:

Gain access to the latch by removing the trim panel enough to work. Once there you can disconnect the latch and use a test light or voltmeter to check for power and ground to the lock actuator while pressing the lock and unlock button. If it has power and ground but won't unlock then you know the latch will need to be replaced. If it's missing power or ground then you've got a wiring or instrument cluster problem hat will need to be investigated.

Most likely it's going to be a latch issue. In that case what you'll need to do is dismantle the latch enough to get it to unlock and then pull the handle or lock rod. Most likely you're going to have to break the latch up go get it to unlock, so you'll probably want to have a replacement on hand before you start.

HOW TO REMOVE LIFTGATE TRIM PANEL:

The diagram at the top will help you

At this point you will need to remove the lift gate trim panel to gain access to the latch mechanism so you can release it manually at the latch. It is not easy to remove the panel when the hatch is closed, but can be done. Here is the procedure on how to remove the panel.

LIFTGATE TRIM PANEL

REMOVAL
Pull upper trim outward to disengage spring clips.
Separate upper trim from liftgate.
Remove screws attaching lower trim to liftgate Liftgate Trim Panel
Pull lower trim outward to disengage spring clips.
Disconnect liftgate lamp wire connector.
Separate lower trim from liftgate.

INSTALLATION
Position lower trim at liftgate.
Connect liftgate lamp wire connector.
Align lower trim on liftgate and press inward to engage spring clips.
Install screws attaching lower trim to liftgate Liftgate Trim Panel
Position upper trim on liftgate.
Align upper trim to liftgate and press inward to engage spring clips.

This will help.
Thanks.
