TRUCK SURGES WHILE RUNNING

2003 Dodge Ram Truck 4x4 surges while driving. And check engine light came ON.

Got the truck engine module scanned.

RECEIVED MULTIPLE OBD ERROR CODES

List of received error codes:---
P0633, P0837, P0839, P2121, P2122.

Its 5.9 Cummins Engine with Standard Transmission.

NOW FROM WHERE TO START THE TROUBLESHOOTING?

Its a multiple error code issue. There are few different parts in your vehicle that needs to be inspected.
First you need to know what this codes are telling and i want to know If you have replaced the ECM(engine control module) on your vehicle or not.

OK, ECM IS NOT REPLACED?

Why i asked about ECM got replaced because of error code P0633.

The error code P0633 sets when the SKIM information hasn't been properly transferred to the ECM after replacement. If  ECM replaced then  this code set because ECM is not programmed and just replaced. This code tells you to get the New ECM programmed.

But as you mentioned above that ECM is not replaced in your vehicle then the code is set erroneously or because of an aftermarket programmer being used. This code isn't related to the problem you are having.
Its nothing to worry, but other codes are.

OK,WHAT EXACTLY THESE ALL ERROR CODES MEAN?

The other codes which you noticed are real problems.
The Error code P0837 and P0839 are both for the transfer case position sensor. These could be wiring or the sensor itself.Mostly its the sensor problem.
But this both error codes are not related to your driveability problem.Yes its related to transfer case position sensor but not related to vehicle surges while driving.

And Error codes .
P2121 and 2122 are both for the accelerator pedal position sensor (APPS).
And this error codes are definitely related to drive ability issues which are noticing.

OK,WHERE IS APPS LOCATED?

The APPS (Accelerator pedal position sensor) is  mounted to the bracket under the black plastic cover at the left front corner of the cylinder head. Its exactly where the throttle cables enter. On the back of the bracket is the APPS. These sensor tells the ECM how far the throttle is open. But if the signal from this sensor is incorrect then ECM will not control the throttle and you notice such problems.
Vehicle surges, hesitates,stalling,jerks,stumbling etc.

SO SHOULD I REPLACE ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR

Before replacing this sensor i suggest to inspect the wiring.
Error codes P2121 and 2122 can be caused by a wiring problem between the sensor and ECM, or the sensor itself, or problem with the ECM.
Wiring or the ECM are possible but not common at all, although failures of the APPS is majorly noticed. What I would recommend is a visual inspection of the wiring and connection, try cleaning the Sensors plug terminals then re-insert and see if its helping. But if wiring checked ok and cleaning the Accelerator pedal position sensor connectors is not helping  then replace the APPS.That will solve the problem.

This details will help.
Thanks.

2004 Dodge town & country: Jerks and Hesitates During Acceleration?

Vehicle Jerks, stalls and hesitates during acceleration.
It also makes Loud sound while starting from Exhaust.

The Sound noticed from muffler while start up.

First of all i will say,get the error codes retrieved. Is there check engine light coming up on dash board.

If there is Check engine light coming up on dash, then it confirms that there is definite error code stored in cars computer system.
But in some rare cases, the check engine light will not come up on dash, but still there is error code stored in computer system, its called ECM or ECU.

To know what error code is stored in cars Computer system,a tool is required. Its called OBD II scan tool. But if you dont have this tool, then there is one more way.
ITS called manually way of getting the error codes retrieved.

The simple procedure is as follows:---

Cycle the key from off to on three times ending with it on and watch the digital odometer display. Please note,Don't crank the starter, just off to on. The codes start with a P and have four numbers, there may be more than one stored. When the error code is shown,it will show "DONE" on display.
If there are no error codes stored then it will directly shown DONE on display, after you try the procedure.

If there are any code stored and its retrieved, then this error codes will help you to confirm what the problem is,so you can continue troubleshooting in that way.

But if in case the ECM is clear and no code is set then on that basic, the problem which you are facing has few possibilities.

The details about that possibilities are as follows:----

PROBLEM NUMBER 1:------

  • VEHICLE HESITATES AND STALLS/JERKS WHILE ACCELERATION

On this issue with no error codes stored in cars computer system, there are a couple things that are most likely to be checked and inspected.

  1. One would be the EGR position sensor. On dodge town & country 2004 year model vehicle the position sensor is internal in the EGR valve and serviced with it. In most cases its seen that the sensor will fail and allow the valve to hang open when it should be actually closed and the engine controller still thinks it's closed. The engine can't tolerate EGR flow at idle or low speeds, so if the valve hangs open at these times then it will cause some hesitation and sometimes it can die at idle.Or you notice jerking and stalling issues. Replacement of the EGR valve would be necessary if the sensor has failed. In that case get the EGR valve and sensor checked.
  2. The other common problem that can cause this issue is faulty/dirty worn out  plug wires. The problem is noticed by others too.The plug wires on these vehicles had alot of problems with spark leakage to each other or anything they come in contact with. On this case There was also a service bulletin released by dealership service center for replacing the plugs, wires, and reprogramming the engine controller software for misfire concerns. I've routinely seen plug wires fail on these at 15,000 miles, but the replacement wires do last much longer.Always prefer to buy branded and reputable company parts.Aftermarket compatible parts are cheap but they dont last long.

PROBLEM NUMBER 2:---

  • LOUD NOISE FROM EXHAUST
There are a couple possible causes for exhaust being louder.

  1. It's possible that there is a leak somewhere, or the muffler issue. If the muffler is replaced previously and its a aftermarket product ,then this parts don't last long and this can be one sort of issue for such loud noise. The muffler is used to lower /lessen the noise from exhaust while start up.If its worn out/old then it can cause such problem. I would make sure the exhaust is checked out for any leaks. If there are no leaks but the muffler has been replaced with an aftermarket one then you could have a factory one installed if the noise is objectionable to you.
  2. If there are no leaks, then get the noise inspected at near by garage. If they tell you that the noise is normal then try to compare it to another like van to see if it's the same or not.If another van is not causing such noise, then exhaust system and muffler component needs to be checked by professional. This issue definitely lying somewhere in between there.

This details will help.
Thanks.

Why car stalls while driving?

PLEASE HELP.
I NOTICE STALLING,WHILE DRIVING MY CAR.
IS THIS COMMON PROBLEM OR ITS A SERIOUS PROBLEM.
WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF THIS STALLING?
-----------
OK.
There are many things that can cause a car to stall while driving it. An engine is made up of many parts.
IF ANY OF FUEL OR SPARK OR IGNITION RELATED PART STOPS FUNCTIONING CORECTLY THEN YOU WILL NOTICE SUCH STALLING.

If your car stalled while you were driving it, look for an obvious reason first. Check to make sure you have fuel in the tank (if your gas gauge is working).

The crank and cam sensors tell the engine where top dead center is. Though these sensors do not usually cause a no start, if they break, the computer will go into "limp home mode and the car will run badly, and may stall while driving.
If the spark plug wires, spark plugs or coils are bad and are causing the engine to misfire, the engine will run rough. This may also cause the car to stall when driving.

Bad injectors faulty fuel pump, clogged fuel filter can also cause stalling problem.
If the fuel pump go bad then engine will not feed with required fuel and you will notice stalling.
Bad injectors in a multi-port system will make the car run rough, which can cause a stalling situation, but generally, the car will restart.
If the timing belt breaks, the car will stall. If the computer itself stops working, the car will stall.

Getting this possibilities checked is advisable.
