Chrysler PT Cruiser Rear Hatch Will Not Open

Chrysler Rear Hatch Handel Stuck Up

2003 PT Cruiser and the rear hatch handle is got stuck in the pulled up position and it won't go back to its actual position and so can't open the hatch.

Is there a way to get the hatch open or gain access to the lock mechanism. If force is applied to the handle down it can break.

EXPERT'S REPLY:

How Is Outside Handel and Latch Connected To Each Other?
How exactly This rear door lift gate system works?

It sounds like you have a mechanical failure of the latch. A direct link goes between the outside handle and the latch. When you move the handle up it pushes the link down, the link is attached on the other end directly to the latch. This pushes the internal linkage in the latch and releases the pawl to open the liftgate.

Ok,what seems To Be The Problem here?

as per the problem described here.Since the handle is stuck and it won't release either it sounds like the problem is going to be the latch itself, assuming nothing was closed in the liftgate and it was closing properly before this (no body damage, adjusted properly, etc).

So What Are My Chances To Get The Liftgate Open?

What you're going to have to do is remove the liftgate trim panel so you can get to the latch from the inside. There really isn't a provision for getting to a latch when they fail like this and it can be tough. Cutting an access hole in the trim panel is a last resort option but you should be able to get the panel off and access the latch.

Ok,What Is The Next Step After I Get To The Latch?

Once you can get to the latch then you'll see the linkage going in between. You can remove it from the handle and try to move it by hand and see if it will release, this will rule out a handle problem.

But If It Will Not Open By Moving The Rod Manually Then?

If it still won't open when moving the link rod by hand then you know the latch will need to be replaced.

Is It Easy To Replace Latch?

Once you have the new latch on hand then you can dismantle the old one with whatever means necessary to get to the pawl and release the liftgate. Sometimes you can pry the latch apart, sometimes cutting is necessary to get to the internals enough to release it.

What are chances Of Latch Failing,Because till Now All Worked Ok?

Usually you can get a trim panel off with the liftgate closed, or at least get it removed enough to get to the latch without damaging it. I've never had to damage one or cut a hole in one to get to the latch, but it's sometimes necessary.

Please Note: The screws that hold the trim on are on the bottom of the hatch. The trim can be somewhat lifted off the hooks near the window and folded down enough to get to the latch mechanism.

The rest of the panel is held in with push in clips and you can usually disengage enough of them to partially remove the panel enough to get in to access the latch and inspect other parts inside.

Many a times, its just dust/dirt issue. This causes parts to get stuck up and cleaning the internal assembly helps to resolve the problem.
But this all can be done, once you get into the panel. This will let you know what the exact cause of problem.

Is it a broken part or just a basic internal cleaning and servicing issue.

This will help.
Thanks.
