2003 Chrysler Voyager Starting Issues

Chrysler Takes Time To start

Chrysler quits While Driving

2003 Chrysler Voyager 3.3L V6 OHV. Takes several turns to start. Will Quit while driving. Seems to be stuck in 3rd. Will start after several attempts once I hear the Fuel pump turn on. If I replace relays or switch relays around it usually starts.

Troubleshooting:

It Can Be The Issue With Power Distribution Center (PDC):

If the act of moving relays around has a definite effect on the problem then it's likely your problem is internal in the power distribution center.

Moisture And corrosion Issue:

There have been some problems with internal corrosion caused by moisture over time. Corrosion on the circuit boards inside will cause voltage drop or open circuits between fuses, relays, the front control module, and the connectors underneath.

Issue With ASD Relay And Fuel Pump Relay:

If power feeds for the ASD or fuel pump relay were going down or connection problems were happening between the relays, PCM, or connectors underneath then that would explain it not starting and the fact that the fuel pump doesn't run but it starts when the pump does come on.

Gear Stuck-up Issue:

The trans is also supplied battery voltage through a relay in the power distribution center, if it loses power from the relay then it will stay in second gear.

On Many Vehicles Such problem Occurs when It rains Heavily. The Electrical Components In the engine And Gear Box Get Wet and Such problem Is noticed.

Car Not Starting After Floods?

Try wetting down the wiring harness under the power distribution center (PDC) and see if the problem happens. If not, then wet the PDC and see if it then acts up. If it does act up when you wet it down then replace the PDC.

What Is ASD Relay?

ASD is the relay that powers the injectors and ignition coil. It's in the power distribution center among all the others.

Dodge Van Dies While Driving

Dodge Ram Van 3500: 96 Dodge Ram Van 3500 died while driving.

It seems to be a fuel problem because it will start for a moment if I pour a little gas into the motor.

Troubleshooting:

First Try This procedure:

If it will start off fuel put in through the throttle body then you know you have spark and must be lacking fuel pressure.

Confirm fuel Pressure problem:

Slide underneath at the fuel tank area and have a helper cycle the key a few times and see if you can hear the pump run each time. If not then you know for sure you don't have fuel pressure.

It's possible that the pump could be running and not developing enough pressure to start though.

Fuel Pump Not Running:

If you don't hear the pump then have a helper cycling the key or cranking the engine while you hit the bottom of the tank. This will often jar the pump and allow it to work again if it's the cause.

Next Step Is To Inspect The Wiring:

If that doesn't help then take a look at the wiring running from the tank up the left frame rail. This wiring is in an area somewhat prone to damage, a nick in a wire will allow moisture in and it will corrode internally. I've seen this prevent the fuel pump from running on these vans.

Inspect Fuses And Relay:

Make sure fuses are ok if you haven't already, and try swapping the fuel pump relay with another.

If all is ok and the pump isn't running then your next step would be to check for power and ground at the pump. If it has power and ground but won't run then it will need to be replaced.

If you're missing ground it will be a wiring issue.

If you are missing power it could be a wiring issue, power distribution center, or possibly the powertrain control module (unlikely). The next step would be to move to testing at the relay.

Chrysler Sebring Touring: 2007 4dr Sebring 2.4 engine dies at idle

Chrysler Sebring 2.4 engine dies at idle

Engine dies at idle intermittently while at stop light or when engine gets warm

Question:

There is no check engine light, still scanned the engine module with no error code stored, the vehicle starts and runs fine with no problems but suddenly dies at idle without any indication.

Is it faulty PCM or any other know issue causing these problem?

Please Help !!!!!!!!1

Answer by expert:-

Thanks for asking your question here.

There are a few things I will mention below to troubleshoot these issue noticed on your vehicle:-----

  • Primary will be software. We have seen a good number of software changes to the PCM, often with a TSB but just as often there are updates released with no TSB's or certification. The first thing to start is make sure the PCM software is up to date.If not then get the PCM software updated from nearest Chrysler dealer.

  • Other then this i suggest you to get the crank sensor connector checked and inspected. If the connector seems faulty then i suggest to replace the crank sensor connector. Why i am suggesting to inspect and replace crank sensor because at our auto repair garage we have seen many such connector getting faulty causing same types of problem. And as per your vehicle model mentioned these early World engines had problems with terminal grip at the crank sensor connector and it will cause driveability issues and sometimes crank sensor codes to set. Replacement of the connector may take care of the issue.

  • But if the crank sensor looks fine then other thing to be checked is burning of the fuel pump connector. A poor connection in between the pump connector and pump will result in the connector getting melt, which definitely will aggravate the poor connection. I've come across this cause intermittent driveability problems exactly like you are having, and won't set a code in the PCM since it's not monitored or controlled by the PCM. Replacement of the pump and connector together is usually necessary to repair this. The pump has an access panel under the left rear seat and you could check this fairly quickly.

  • As per my vehicle repair experience its not the  PCM locking up. If the PCM was locking up somehow then it wouldn't restart the way it does. Usually when a module locks up it needs a power cycle (battery disconnect) to unlock, if it does unlock. If it's starting right back up I wouldn't suspect a PCM issue. And in your case the vehicle dies at idle but it will again restart normally and run.So PCM getting lock up is not possible.

These details will help.
Thanks.

Jeep Grand Cherokee will cut out, engine dies

Customer:---
Hello Garage Expert Team

Jeep Grand Cherokee, 1997, six cyl, two wheel drive.
Car will cut out, engine dies, at 65mph on freeway or turning corner on side streets.
Car returned from mechanic yesterday, and today the "check engine" light just came back on.
Mechanic says Its Faulty computer?
Should i replace ECM or its anything else?

GARAGE EXPERT TEAM:---
Please provide more vehicle details and what else is tried till yet on these jeep.

Customer:---

VEHICLE DETAILS
Its a  1997 year jeep grand Cherokee model

Engine : 6 cyl
Till yet i have visited to 2 mechanics.Bot suggested faulty ignition coil and i replace ignition coil and now after check engine light came ON,one mech says its due to faulty ECM,should i replace it?

GARAGE EXPERT TEAM:---

I need to know what fault codes you received, due to which mechanic told to replace the computer.
Do you have the codes with you.

Customer:---
The codes are not with me.

GARAGE EXPERT TEAM:--
OK.Do you have scan tool.

Customer :---
No,i dont have scan tool.

GARAGE EXPERT TEAM:---

Ok,try these manual procedure to retrieve the Error codes,so we can continue further.

Cycle the key from off to on three times ending with it on and watch for the check engine light to flash codes. Don't crank the starter, just off to on. After the last time you turn the key on the light will come on and then go off. After a pause it will come back and start flashing. It will flash up to 9 times and then pause. Count the flashes between the pauses - this is a code digit. Write down all digits that you see and post them here in order.

Customer:---
I am not able to understand the codes.

tried turning the key on to off three times twice but the check engine light stayed solid the entire time...ended with key on and waited 20 sec Plus

GARAGE EXPERT TEAM:---

This feature was hit and miss on the 1997 model year so it may not work, but it can be tricky if it does work. Here is a short video I made showing the process that may help. If you were doing it just right but it won't work then we can assume it's not going to work on yours.

These is direct link for the video:---
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEjDEr47MNQ&feature=plcp

Please confirm which year model jeep Cherokee you have,

Open the glove box and check the registration

Please note:--- The flash code feature went away with the 1998 model year.
If the code procedure is not working on your vehicle, may be its of year 1998 or its manufactured at near the end of year 1997.

Customer:----
I think may be car if of year 1998 and so these procedure is not working. One thing i would like to share with you experts. When the technician was replacing the ignition coil.

"One of the mechanics I took it to bumped the connection to the computer while installing the coils and the car would consistently stop..
So then he ordered an aftermarket computer and when he went to install it he noticed some of the "prongs" on the connector  were pushed back ...he pulled them forward and seemed like they snapped back in...the bumping of the connector would no longer cause the engine to quit... and the car drove last night and this morning without the check engine light coming on until about 1 hour of driving. But now the check engine light is coming on right.
So can it be issue with loose wiring or problem with PCM or ECM.

GARAGE EXPERT TEAM:---

Try to locate the PCM in your vehicle and visually view its connectors condition.

Locate the powertrain control module (PCM), which is on the right side of the firewall behind the coolant reservoir, and then wiggle test the connectors with the engine running to see if it will miss or die.

The PCM is the silver rectangular module mounted all the way on the right side of the firewall and it will have three 32-way electrical connectors. What we want to do is start it up and wiggle each one up and down and see if the engine misses or dies. These will let us know either is loose wiring issue oir faulty PCM/ECM itself.

Customer:---
Ok,i got it.
These are my results about the wiggle test.

On the left side of the fire wall there is a flat rectangular approx 10"x8" maybe 1"thick type pan with three connectors into it...
I wiggled the connector wires which were loose and it sputters...I wiggle that one and the one to its left and it stops immediately.
So there is some effect showing by wiggling the connectors.

And one more thing,i asked the first mechanic who inspected my car and he told that error code was P)351.

Garage Expert Team:----

Yes, it sounds like you're in the right spot. You've described the PCM well, but it's actually on the right side of the firewall, which will be on your left side when facing the vehicle from the front.

The problem is internal in the PCM. Without a doubt, the code P0351, which  you mentioned is for the ignition coil primary circuit. The coil receives voltage from the ASD relay and is controlled using a ground driver from the PCM, a single wire leaves the PCM and goes to the coil to produce spark.

I think these all is relkated to each other.
I will give you more explanation about the problem:----

Coil driver failures in the PCM's on these that come and go with moving PCM connectors is fairly common.

There is a confirm poor joint on the circuit board inside the PCM  and that is definitely causing an open circuit on the coil driver in the PCM, that's what is setting the coil code and also causing the engine to die. This is a fairly common problem on these vehicles and is what I figured you had going on. While loose terminals in one of the PCM connectors definitely could have caused the problem and definitely needed to be fixed, the PCM is going to need to be replaced to repair this concern.

The mechanics which you dealt with for these problem, have diagnosed the issue right.

But still before replacing the PCM,i suggest ask the mechanic to look at the loose connector joints of PCM and make be re-soldering these connector joints helps you to take care of the issue without replacing whole PCM,but if that is not helping then replacing the PCMis best possible option to solve these issue.

These details will help.
Thanks.

Ford F350 Suddenly quit running while driving?

This sudden quit of ford vehicle is seen many a times.
But there are many possibilities, that can cause this problems,.
Like faulty spark plugs, problem with injectors.
Also check if the fuel tank is full,if its low on fuel/gas the engine will surge/stumble for few second and die,due to low gas in the tank.
If you have good fuel pressure (32 to 45 psi) as well as good spark to the spark plugs as well as injector pulse then the next step would be to run a compression test and if it check low (below 100 PSI) then line #1 cylinder up on TDC on the compression stroke and have a look at the distributor rotor to see if its pointed at #1 on the cap. If the compression low and the rotor dosnt line up, suspect the timing chain has jumped.

This details will help you to confirm the problem.
Thanks.
