Engine Compatibility for Jeep
Need To use 1997 jeep cherokee 4.0 motor on 1991 jeep yj with a manual trans. Is it Possible?
EXPERTS REPLY:
Actually its not possible.About fitting it will fit,but you will notice gring and draging noise issues.
The engine should fit physically but isn't a direct replacement due to all the changes made in the electronics, etc. It could be made to work though.
The most issues noticed by others who already tried such modifications is grinding on front of crank shaft. It was about 1/4 inch to long. We have switched most through from one motor to the other.
But its not 100% success.
Still you can try is
If you ground on the face of the crankshaft that wouldn't be a big deal as long as the crank damper still seated correctly and spun true while the engine is running.
But these types f engine modifications cost goes much.
The reason is none of the electronics will be compatible between the old engine and replacement. The fuel injectors, all sensors, distributor, etc will all need to be retained from the old engine and swapped over to the replacement.
If you think of doing these, then i suggest getting proper help and support from on site profession mech with you.
Also wok out about the approx cost to be spend to complete these task.
Thanks.
