Caster and Camber Alignment?

How to Adjust caster and camber Alignment on 2001 jeep grand Cherokee.

Both the Above mentioned issues will be discussed below.
As its already mentioned that problem is noticed on 2001 jeep grand Cherokee model. This model is similar to other year jeep models from year 2001 to 2005.

CAN THE CASTER AND CAMBER SETTING BE ALIGNED?

Yes of course it can be aligned. All vehicles can be aligned.Caster and camber weren't originally adjustable.
From the factory the only adjustable alignment angle on your Jeep is toe. By Toe it  refers to the left and right angle of the front wheels along with their fitting to the steering wheel.

WHAT IS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CASTER AND CAMBER?

Both this caster and camber aligns vehicle on different regions.
Caster is the angle of the wheels front to back, camber is the amount of inward or outward lean of the wheels at the top.

OK,WHAT TOOL IS REQUIRED AND HOW TO ALIGN?

Any special tool is not required. You will require offset ball joint to start this adjusting procedure.
The steering knuckle attaches to the axle tube by a ball joint and they pivot when you turn the steering to any left/right direction. These Offset ball joints have a stud that is offset in relation to it's base, which presses into the end of the axle tube. Turning the direction of the ball joint and pressing it in at the right direction allows you to adjust caster and camber settings.

If caster or camber is out of its specification then aligning it is required. To align install an offset ball joint to correct the issue. After that is installed you will have to set toe to complete the alignment.

PROFESSIONAL GARAGE SHOP INSPECTED AND SUGGESTED NEW BALL JOINT,BECAUSE BOOT WAS MISSING?

If a ball joint is required because a boot was missing then this issue is not related to the offset ball joint that I previously mentioned, unless garage professional specifically said that they would be replacing it with an offset one. It sounds like maybe they were recommending a ball joint just because of the boot torn and not to fix the alignment.
But i suggest get the alignment issue fixed first. They are just pointing to replace ball joints but not fixing the alignment.

Also get the issue inspected by another garage store and ask them they look into installing the offset ball joints to fix the alignment issue. Also get the axle inspected it may be bent

HINT:-- If you notice  abnormally fast wear on the inside edges of the front tires? That would be a sign of a camber problem.

OK,AND WHAT ABOUT LOOSE TIE ROD END?

If a tie rod end is loose that means the steering is loose and toe cannot be correctly set.
So first get the  tie rod end replaced or repaired that should be a priority, without that done dont set toe.As it will not get aligned properly.
It is also a safety hazard and I would recommend having it repaired as soon as you can.

This details will help.
Thanks.

TIE ROD ARM DISASSEMBLY

2001 Dodge Stratus Tie rod Arm removal from Steering rod/knuckle.

How to remove Tie rod end which is connected to Steering rod?

The most of cases which we have noticed at our garage in removing  the tie rod arm from the steering arm. The the ball part on the linkage arm on the wheel is very easy to take apart, but major issue is noticed breaking the threads loose on the tie rod arm that connects to the steering rod.

Its the Nut that gets jammed. And removing this jam nut becomes frustrating. But if you have all basic tools, then its not very difficult.
Its a proper do-it-yourself procedure.

If in your case the Nut is very tight and not easy to remove.
Then the first thing is to break the jam nut loose.
For your info the jam nut is the nut threaded on to the tie rod just behind the tie rod end. You can easily see it.

Most of  new self doers first remove tie rod end from steering knuckle then remove the nut.But actually its not needed. It's much easier to break the jam nut loose if you still have the tie rod end installed in the steering knuckle.
So if you have separated the tie-rod end from knuckle then i suggest refit it.If the threads aren't damaged then go ahead and throw it back in the knuckle and start the nut. It doesn't necessarily have to be tightened all the way.Just keep it bit connected.

Once this is done then break the jam nut loose. The nut has normal right hand threads, looking at it from the wheel well you'll turn the jam nut clockwise to loosen it.And counter-clock wise to tighten it.

OK.WHAT TOOLS ARE REQUIRED TO DO THIS TASK?

Not any special tool is required.
But if you can use longer tools then its better.Because that gives you more leverage. For tie rod ends and jam nuts  use an adjustable wrench that's about 18". A longer wrench will obviously give you more leverage. If you still can't get it to break loose then you'll need to apply some heat to the nut. This will dilute the rustiness and make the nut fitting bit smooth to slide out easily.

Now once the jam nut is loose ,you can now remove tie rod end from steering knuckle.

HOW TO REMOVE TIE ROD END?

Its not very hard.
You will need gripping pliers.large wrench, pipe wrench and heating tool(not required every time)

  • Hold the tie rod stationary with some Vise Grip type pliers.
  • Then grab the flats on the tie rod end with the large adjustable wrench, wrench, pipe wrench, etc.
  • Now to remove it turn  counterclockwise to loosen and remove it.
  • Please don't get confused. To remove the tie rod end nut you have to turn clockwise, but to remove tie rod end itself from knuckle you have turn it counter-clock wise.
  • If the tie-rod end is tight enough to turn. There here you will often have to apply heat to get it to break loose and come off.
NOTE: This heating is not required every time.Sometimes they will come right loose and come all the way off easily, but very often you have to heat them to get them to break loose.

This details will help.
Thanks.

How to replace Tie Rod Ends on Chevy silverado 2500HD?

The procedure to perform this task is as follows :----

2005-06 Models & 2007 Classic

  1. Raise and support the front end on jack stands.
  2. Remove the nut from the knuckle end ball stud. Discard the nut.

  3. Using a screw-type ball joint tool, separate the tie rod ball stud from the knuckle.
  4. On all except C3HD models, remove the nut from the inner tie rod ball stud.
  5. Using a screw-type ball joint tool, separate the tie rod ball stud from the relay rod.
  6. Clean the threaded parts of the tie rod ends thoroughly and count the exact number of threads exposed on each tie rod end. Measure the overall length of the tie rod assembly.
  7. Loosen the clamp nuts, spread the clamps and unscrew each tie rod end.
To install:
  1. Coat the threaded parts of the new tie rod ends with chassis grease. Screw the tie rod ends into the sleeve until the exact number of threads is exposed on each tie rod end. Check the overall length of the new assembly. Adjust as necessary. Don't tighten the clamp nuts yet.
  2. On all except C3HD models, position the tie rod assembly in the relay rod and install a new nut on the ball stud. Tighten the nut to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  3. Position the other tie rod end in the knuckle. Install the new nut and tighten it to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm) except on C3HD. On C3HD models, tighten the nut to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  4. Before tightening the clamp nuts, position the clamp as shown in the accompanying illustrations.
  5. Tighten the clamp nuts 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) except on C3HD. On C3HD models, tighten the clamp nuts to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).

Except Classic

  1. Raise and support the front end on jack stands.
  2. Remove the nut from the knuckle end ball stud. Discard the nut.
  3. Using a screw-type ball joint tool, separate the tie rod ball stud from the knuckle.
  4. Clean the threaded parts of the tie rod ends thoroughly and count the exact number of threads exposed on each tie rod end. Measure the overall length of the tie rod assembly.
  5. Loosen, but do not remove the jam nut. Remove the tie rod.
