2007 ford expedition engine cranks but wont start

Engine cranks fine but will not start

A common problem, noticed on many other vehicles too.

On this cases first see if the check engine light is coming on and remaining steady or blinking.

In any cases, getting the vehicle scanned helps.
At autozone service centers its free to get vehicle scanned.

But if no error code stored or no codes retrieved in diagnostics then for troubleshooting, you have to test and inspect few common parts manually.

When you turn the key to the start position, What does the red theft light in the dash do?

Inspect this light properly,Does it blink fast, stay on or go out?

If it blinks faster than normal you may have an anti theft problem but, If you hear a clicking noise coming from the engine compartment, this may be the sign of a weak battery with not enough cold cranking amps to turn over the starter or a faulty starter motor.

In this case, try jump starting the vehicle and see,if it starts fine by jump start, then its isue with weak battery or loose battery to start connections.
Get the vehicle checked with replacement battery.

Yes, the vehicle could have 12 volts which is what is needed to run all lights and accessories but the cranking amps are what is needed to turn over the starter as it requires a high amperage.

But if battery and other voltages, including starter checked ok,then the next thing to be checked is fuel system.

Try starting with starter fluid on throttle body and see if vehicle is running with starter fluid or not.
If yes then issue is with faulty or weak fuel pump or the fuel filter is dirty and needs to be cleaned or replaced.

Also before replacing fuel pump, get the inertia switch checked.

You have to check power coming into the inertia switch and power going out, if that's good then so far its looking like a new fuel pump is in order

There are two wires coming from inertia switch. The inertia switch wires should give the same voltage of what the car battery voltage is.
The battery voltage should be 12 volts. So the wires on inertia switch should give approx 12 volts.

The inertia switch for your vehicle is located behind the removable trim panel in the left side rear of the vehicle.

If the above troubleshooting details do not help. Then the problem is related to faulty sensors. Both camshaft sensor and crankshaft sensor.First  replace the camshaft position sensor. If that doesn't fix it; replace the crankshaft position sensor.

But if any of these sensors are faulty, then in vehicle scan diagnosis, you should get error codes, pointing out these sensors to be faulty.

These details will help.
Thanks.

VW Passat will not crank?

Vehicle starts but no cranks.

2002 Volkswagen has no crank.

Two parts needs inspection, before any major testing and parts replacement.

First is battery and another is starter.

Battery testing:]

You need test light or voltmeter with you to start this simple testing procedure.

Check the power at the starter motor, you should have battery voltage on the big thick cable that is bolted to the starter and then when the key is held in the crank position there should be battery voltage on the small thin wire that has a connector attached to it, this is the first area you need to check, .

The voltage should be 12 volt.If its less then its loose terminal or bad earth or loose connection somewhere.

Starter testing:]

If you have a bad earth or the starter motor is defective.
Then to confirm the issue check for a bad earth the quickest thing will be to get a jump lead and connect one end to the metal of the engine/gearbox and connect the other end to the body on a clean point.
Now with these done try and crank car over, if its still the same the starter would appear to be defective but if it goes to start then the earth cable which goes from the body to the engine is defective, and may need to be removed and cleaned and refitted.

These details will help.
Thanks.

Engine cranks but will not start?

There are multiple possibilities for this problem. Most of the branded or non branded car models face this types of problem.
The problem might be simple, but troubleshooting this types of problems takes time.

There is no simple answer, there are to many variables. If you have access to a scan tool, pulling the codes should help. Without them its back to old school hunt and peck method. At this point we need to narrow down the problem. You need to test for spark.
Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs.

Remove the spark plugs and install the spark plug wires to each spark plug.

Ground (do not hold spark plug) the spark plug; check if spark occurs while engine is being cranked.
Crank the engine for no more than 2 seconds at a time to prevent flooding the engine with gasoline.
If you have spark, You will want to make sure you have fuel injector pulse, along with fuel pressure. If you have spark ..simply spray some starting fluid in through the air filter and hold the gas pedal to the floor and crank it over while spraying. If it fires up, you know it is fuel related( fuel pump, regulator, or ECM if no injector pulse) . If you have no spark then look at ignition coil connection and trace through to the distributor( if equipped ). The crank shaft sensor has a tendency to fail on these as well. This should give you a few things to test and check to start you on your way to narrowing it down. If you have no spark then look at ignition coil connection for power and trace through to the distributor( if equipped ). If it is DIS( no distributor). It may be the Crank sensor or the ECU. The crank shaft sensor has a tendency to fail on these as well.
The ECU uses the signal sent from the Crank sensor to trigger the spark and fuel injectors. ( make certain you have checked all fuses).

This details will help.
Thanks.

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.
