Timing Belt Cover and Seal, 1C-LTC and 2CL-TC Engines
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
1C-LTC and 2CL-TC Engines
See Figures 1 and 2
- Remove the right front wheel.
- Remove the fender apron seal.
- Remove the washer and radiator reservoir tanks.
- Disconnect and label all vacuum hoses, cables and harnesses. Remove the cruise control actuator and bracket.
- Remove the power steering pump with bracket.
- Remove the alternator and alternator bracket.
- Remove the three clips, five bolts and remove the upper (No. 2) timing belt cover and gasket.
- Align the line mark of the camshaft pulley with the top end of the cylinder head by turning the crankshaft pulley bolt CLOCKWISE.
- Using SST No.'s 09213-14010 and 09330-00021 or equivalents to hold the crankshaft pulley stationary, remove the pulley setbolt and plate washer.
- Remove the five bolts and remove the No. 1 timing belt cover and gasket.
- Discard the timing belt cover gaskets and purchase new ones. Make sure the upper and lower covers are clean.
- Install the lower (No. 1) timing belt cover with the new gasket. Install and tighten the five bolts.
- Using SST No. 09214-60010 or equivalent, drive the crankshaft pulley onto the crankshaft.
- Hold the crankshaft pulley stationary with the same tool used during removal and install the set bolt and plate washer. Tighten the set bolt to 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm).
- Install the upper timing belt cover and new gasket with the three clips and five bolts.
- Attach the alternator and alternator bracket. Adjust the belt tension.
- Install the power steering pump and adjust the drive belt tension.
- Install the cruise control actuator and bracket. Engage the harnesses, cables and vacuum hoses.
- Check and adjust the injection timing.
- Install the fender apron seal.
- Install the right front wheel.
- Check and adjust the engine idle and maximum speeds.

- On some models the engine coolant reservoir must be removed.
- Remove the right front wheel.
- Remove the fender apron liner and right engine under cover.
- Remove the drive belts.
- Remove the cruise control actuator and bracket.
- On 2S-ELC engines, remove the power steering reservoir and belt. On 3S-FE and 5S-FE engines, remove the alternator and alternator bracket.
- Using a wood block on the jack, raise the engine enough to relieve the weight from the engine on the right mounting side.
- Remove the right engine mounting insulator and bracket. On the 5S-FE, remove the engine moving control rod.
- Remove the spark plugs.
- Remove the five bolts and remove the upper (No. 2) timing belt cover with gasket.
- Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC of the compression stroke as follows:
- 2S-ELC/USA : Align the oil seal retainer mark with the center of the small hole E mark on the camshaft timing pulley by turning the crankshaft pulley clockwise.
- 2S-ELC/Canada : Align the oil seal retainer with the center of the small hole on the camshaft timing pulley by turning the pulley clockwise.
- 3S-FE and 5S-FE : Check that the hole in the camshaft timing pulley is aligned with the bearing cap alignment mark. If hole and timing mark are not in alignment, turn the crankshaft one complete revolution (360°) and align them.
- Matchmark the timing belt with the camshaft timing pulley. Also, mark the belt where it meets the edge of the lower timing belt cover. Loosen the No. 1 idler pulley set bolt and shift the pulley toward the left as far as it will go, and temporarily tighten the bolt. Remove the timing belt from the camshaft timing pulley.
- Using spanner wrench to hold the camshaft timing pulley, remove the pulley setbolt. Remove the pulley and bolt. On 3S-FE and 5S-FE engines, remove the plate washer also.
- Using a spanner wrench to hold the crankshaft pulley, remove the pulley setbolt. Remove the pulley using a puller.
- Remove the four bolts and remove the lower (No. 1) timing belt cover with gaskets.
- Discard the upper and lower timing belt gaskets and purchase new ones. Make sure the gasket surfaces are clean.
- Install the lower (No.1) timing belt cover and new gasket with the four bolts.
- Align the crankshaft pulley set key with the pulley key groove. Install the pulley. Tighten the pulley bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
- On 2S-ELC engines, turn the crankshaft pulley and align the 0 mark on the lower (No. 1) timing belt cover.
- Align the camshaft knock pin with the matchmarks on the oil seal retainer.
- On 2S-ELC/USA engines, align the knock pin with the pin hole on the timing pulley E mark side. On 2S-ELC/Canadian engines, align the knock pin with the pin hole on the timing pulley. On 3S-FE and 5S-FE engines, align the knock pin with the groove of the pulley, and slide the pulley onto the camshaft with the plate washer and set bolt.
On 2S-ELC engines, make sure that the matchmark on the oil seal retainer and center hole of the small hole on the camshaft timing pulley are aligned.
- Using the removal tool to hold the pulley stationary, install and tighten the pulley set bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) on the 2S-ELC and the 3S-FE. On the 5S-FE, tighten the set bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
- On 3S-FE and 5S-FE engines, turn the crankshaft pulley and align the 0 mark on the lower (No. 1) timing belt cover.
- Install the timing belt and check the valve timing as follows:
- Align the matchmarks that you made previously, and install the timing belt onto the camshaft pulley.
- Loosen the No. 1 idler pulley set bolt 1 / 2 turn.
- Turn the crankshaft pulley two complete revolutions TDC to TDC. ALWAYS turn the crankshaft CLOCKWISE. Check that the pulleys are still in alignment with the timing marks.
- Tighten the No. 1 idler pulley set bolt to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
- Make sure there is belt tension between the crankshaft and camshaft timing pulleys.
- Install the upper (No. 2) timing cover with a new gasket(s). On the 5S-FE, align the two clamps for the engine wiring harness with the cover mounting bolts.
- Install the spark plugs.
- Install the right mounting insulator with bracket. Tighten the bracket bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm), insulator nuts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm) and thru-bolt to 52 ft. lbs. (71 Nm). On the 5S-FE, install the No. 2 engine mount bracket and tighten to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm); install the control rod and tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
- Lower the engine.
- On 3S-FE and 5S-FE engines, install the alternator and alternator bracket. On 2S-ELC engines, install the power steering reservoir tank.
- Install the drive belt and adjust the tension.
- Install the cruise control actuator with bracket.
- Install the fender apron seal and right engine under cover.
- Install the right front wheel.

- Remove the power steering pump reservoir and position it out of the way. Remove the right fender apron seal and then remove the alternator and power steering belts. On 2VZ-FE, remove the cruise control actuator and vacuum pump.
- On the 3VZ-FE, remove the coolant reservoir hose, the washer tank and then the coolant overflow tank.
- Remove the right side engine mount stays.
- Position a piece of wood on a floor jack and then slide the jack under the oil pan. Raise the jack slightly until the pressure is off the engine mounts.
- On the 2VZ-FE, remove the right side engine mount insulator. On the 3VZ-FE, remove the engine control rod.
- Remove the spark plugs.
- Remove the right side engine mounting bracket.
- Remove the eight bolts and lift off the upper (No. 2) cover.
- Paint matchmarks on the timing belt at all points where it meshes with the pulleys and the lower timing cover.
- Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC of the compression stroke and check that the timing marks on the camshaft timing pulleys are aligned with those on the No. 3 timing cover. If not, turn the engine one complete revolution (360°) and check again.
- Remove the timing belt tensioner and the dust boot.
- Turn the right camshaft pulley clockwise slightly to release tension and then remove the timing belt from the pulleys.
- Use a spanner wrench to hold the pulley, loosen the set bolt and then remove the camshaft timing pulleys along with the knock pin. Be sure to keep track of which is which.
- Remove the No. 2 idler pulley.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley and then pull off the lower (No. 1) timing belt cover.
- Install the lower (No. 1) timing cover and tighten the bolts.
- Align the crankshaft pulley set key with the key groove on the pulley and slide the pulley on. Tighten the bolt to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm).
- Install the No. 2 idler pulley and tighten the bolt to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm). Check that the pulley moves smoothly.
- Install the left camshaft pulley with the flange side outward. Align the knock pin hole in the camshaft with the knock pin groove on the pulley and then install the pin. Tighten the bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
- Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC again. Turn the right camshaft until the knock pin hole is aligned with the timing mark on the No. 3 belt cover. Turn the left pulley until the marks on the pulley are aligned with the mark on the No. 3 timing cover.
- Check that the mark on the belt matches with the edge of the lower cover. If not, shift it on the crank pulley until it does. Turn the left pulley clockwise a bit and align the mark on the timing belt with the timing mark on the pulley. Slide the belt over the left pulley. Now move the pulley until the marks on it align with the one on the No. 3 cover. There should be tension on the belt between the crankshaft pulley and the left camshaft pulley.
- Align the installation mark on the timing belt with the mark on the right side camshaft pulley. Hang the belt over the pulley with the flange facing inward. Align the timing marks on the right pulley with the one on the No. 3 cover and slide the pulley onto the end of the camshaft. Move the pulley until the camshaft knock pin hole is aligned with the groove in the pulley and then install the knock pin. Tighten the bolt to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
- Position a plate washer between the timing belt tensioner and the a block and then press in the pushrod until the holes are aligned between it and the housing. Slide a 1.27mm (3VZ-FE 1.5mm) Allen wrench through the hole to keep the push rod set. Install the dust boot and then install the tensioner. Tighten the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (26 Nm). Don't forget to pull out the Allen wrench!
- Turn the crankshaft clockwise two complete revolutions and check that all marks are still in alignment. If they aren't, remove the timing belt and start over again.
- Install the right engine mount bracket and tighten it to 30 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
- Position a new gasket and then install the upper (No. 2) timing cover. Refer to the illustration for bolt positioning.
- Install the spark plugs.
- On the 2VZ-FE, install the right engine mount insulator. Tighten the bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm), the bracket nut to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm) and the body nut to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm). Install the No. 1 stay and tighten it to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm). Install the No. 2 stay and tighten the bolt to 48 ft. lbs. (66 Nm) and the nut to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
- On the 3VZ-FE, install the control rod and tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm). Install the right stay and tighten it to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).
- Install and adjust the drive belts.
- Install the fender apron seal and the wheel.
- On the 3VZ-FE, install the No. 2 stay and tighten the bolt to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm), the nut to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm). Install the No. 3 stay and tighten it to 54 ft. lbs. (73 Nm).
- Install the coolant overflow tank and the washer tank.
- Install the power steering reservoir tank and the cruise control actuator.
- Connect the battery cable, start the car and check for any leaks.

Timing Belt Cover and Seal, 1MZ-FE Engine
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
1MZ-FE Engine

- Remove the engine coolant reservoir tank and the alternator belt.
- Remove the right front wheel and the splash shield.
- Remove the power steering pump drive belt by loosening the two bolts.
- Disconnect the two ground wire connectors.
- Remove the right engine mounting stay.
- Remove the engine moving control rod and the No. 2 right engine mounting bracket.
To extract the engine bracket and control rod, you will need to raise the engine slightly.
- Remove the No. 2 alternator bracket.
- Using a prybar and wrench or SST tool 09213-54015 and 09330-00021, remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
- Using a puller, remove the crankshaft pulley.
- Remove the No. 1 timing belt cover by removing four bolts.
- Remove the No. 2 timing belt cover as follows:
- Remove the bolt and disconnect the engine wire protector from the No. 3 (rear) timing belt cover.
- Disconnect the engine wire protector clamp from the No. 3 timing belt cover.
- Remove the five bolts from the No. 2 timing belt cover.
- Remove the No. 2 cover from the engine.
To install:
- Apply the new gasket to the No. 2 timing belt cover. Install it evenly to the part of the belt cover shaded black. After installation, press down on it so that the adhesive sticks to the belt cover firmly.
- Install the No. 2 timing belt cover with the five bolts. Tighten the bolts to 74 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
- Install the engine wire protector clamp to the No. 3 timing belt cover.
- Install the engine wire protector to the No. 3 timing belt cover with the bolt.
- Applky new gasket the way you did on the No. 2 cover on the No. 1 timing cover. Secure the No. 1 timing belt cover with four bolts. Tighten the bolts to 74 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
- Install the crankshaft pulley. Tighten the bolt to 159 ft. lbs. (215 Nm).
- Install the No. 2 alternator bracket. Tighten the nut to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm). Do not tighten the pivot bolt at this time.
- Install the No. 2 right engine mounting bracket and the moving control rod.
- Install the right engine mounting stay.
- Connect the two ground wire connectors.
- Install and adjust the drive belts.
- Install the coolant reservoir.
- Install the right front splash shield and wheel assembly.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Start the vehicle and check for any leaks.
- Recheck the ignition timing.
