How to replace Transaxle on 2002 Toyota Camry ?

Transaxle Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding
    Battery
    Air cleaner assembly
    Throttle cable from the throttle body
    Cruise control actuator cover and connector, if equipped
    Ground wire
    Starter
    Speed sensor connectors, direct clutch speed sensor, and the park/neutral position switch connector on the transaxle
    Solenoid connector on the transaxle
    Shift control cable
    Oil cooler hoses
    Front side transaxle mounting bolts
    Front engine mounting bolts
    Oil cooler line mounting bolts from the front frame
    Upper transaxle to engine mounting bolts

    Front exhaust pipe
    Engine side covers and undercovers
    Both halfshafts
    Front side engine mounting nut
    Rear side engine mounting bolts (remove hole plugs)
    Left side transaxle mounting bolts
    Steering gear housing
    Front frame assembly
    Rear end plate mounting bolts
    Torque converter cover
    Torque converter retaining bolts
    Remaining transaxle mounting bolts
    Transaxle


To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle aligning the 2 dowel pins on the block with the converter housing. 10mm bolts: 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm); 12mm bolts: 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
    Torque converter bolts coated with sealer. Install the bolts starting with the green bolt followed by the rest. Bolts: 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
    Rear end plate. Bolts: 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
    Front frame assembly. 12mm bolts: 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm); 19mm bolts: 134 ft. lbs. (181 Nm); Nut: 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
    Fender liner set screws
    Steering gear to the frame. Bolts and nuts: 134 ft. lbs. (181 Nm).
    Sway bar brackets. Bolts: 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
    Left transaxle mounting bolts. Bolts: 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
    Rear side mounting bolts and nuts. Bolts and nuts: 48 ft. lbs. (66 Nm). Install the plugs.
    Front engine mounting nut. Nut: 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
    Halfshafts
    Right and left engine side covers
    Lower engine cover
    Exhaust pipe. Nuts: 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm).
    Exhaust pipe to the converter. Nuts and bolts: 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    Upper transaxle mounting bolts. Bolts: 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
    Oil cooler clamping bolts to the front frame.
    Front side engine mounting bolts. Bolts: 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
    Front side transaxle mounting bolts. Bolts: 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
    Oil cooler hoses
    Shift control cable
    Solenoid electrical connector
    Park/neutral switch electrical connector
    Speed sensor and the direct clutch speed sensor connectors.
    Starter
    Ground strap
    Cruise control actuator and cover
    Throttle cable to the engine. Nuts: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    Air cleaner
    Battery and battery cables.

  2. Fill the transaxle to the proper level.
  3. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.

    Oil cooler hoses

    Starter

    Throttle cable to the engine. Nuts: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    Air cleaner
    Battery and battery cables.

  2. Fill the transaxle to the proper level.
  3. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.

  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine/transaxle assembly from the vehicle
    Halfshafts
    No,. 2 transmission control cable bracket
    Wiring harness clamps
    Starter
    Transmission electrical connectors
    No. 1 transmission control cable bracket
    Transmission oil filler tube
    Transmission oil cooler hoses
    Transverse engine mounting bracket
    Exhaust pipe support bracket and flywheel housing undercover

  3. Turn the crankshaft to gain access to and remove the torque converter bolts.
  4. Remove the transaxle mounting bolts and separate the transaxle from the engine.

To install:

  1. Install the transaxle to the engine and tighten the mounting bolts as follows:
    1. Bolts A to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
    2. Bolt B to 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).
    3. Bolts C to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).

  2. Install the torque converter mounting bolts. Install the green colored bolt first, then the 5 remaining bolts. Tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Flywheel housing undercover. Tighten to 69 inch lbs. (7.8 Nm).
    Transverse engine mounting bracket. Tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
    Oil cooler hoses. Tighten to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
    Transmission oil filler tube. Tighten clamps to 49 inch lbs. (5.5 Nm).
    No. 1 transmission control cable bracket. Tighten to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
    Transmission electrical connectors
    Starter. Tighten mounting bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
    Wiring harness clamps
    No. 2 transmission control cable bracket. Tighten to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
    Halfshafts
    Engine/transaxle assembly into the vehicle

  4. Start the engine and check for leaks.
