AIR BAG and steering wheel removal procedure on 2001 chevrolet silverado

FIRST THING UNHOOK THE BATTERY , thenwait 10 mintues. this will disable the sir system. here is the stering wheel instructions. column covers

Disable the SIR system.

Turn ON the ignition.

Turn the steering wheel 90 degrees so the side of the SIR module is at the 12 o'clock position in order to gain access to the holes behind the steering wheel.

Insert a screwdriver into the access hole and push the leaf spring to release the notched pin that retains the inflator module.

Turn the steering wheel 180 degrees in order to gain access to the remaining hole.

Insert a flat-bladed tool into the remaining access hole and push the leaf spring to release the notched pin that retains the inflator module

Tilt the top of the inflator module rearward to gain access to the SIR wiring.

Disconnect the SIR lead wire from the clip on the inflator module.Disconnect the SIR lead wire from the clip on the steering wheel.

Disconnect the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer from the SIR connector.

Disconnect the SIR connector.

Remove the inflator module.

Remove the tilt lever from steering column

You must check for 2 pan head tapping screws (1) in the lower trim before removal.

If necessary remove the pan head tapping screws (1) that retain the lower steering column trim cover to the steering column.

If no screws are present, gently unsnap the lower trim cover from the upper trim cover.

Tilt the trim cover down and slide it back in order to disengage the locking tabs.

Remove the lower steering column trim cover.

Slide the shift lever seal up the shift lever.

You must check for 1 TORX head screw (1) in the upper trim cover (2) before removal.

If necessary, remove the screw (1) that retains the upper steering column trim cover to the steering column.

If no screw is present, gently unsnap the upper steering column trim cover.

Remove the upper steering column trim cover.
