- Tighten the adjusting nut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm) while rotating the hub to seat the bearings.
- Loosen the adjusting nut.
- Tighten the adjusting nut to 48 inch lbs. (5.4 Nm) and check that the bearing has no play.
- Check the bearing preload with a spring tension gauge. The preload should be 6.4-12.6 lbs. (28-56 N) for 2001-03; 9.5-15 lbs. (42-67 N)

- Remove the outside oil seal from steering knuckle, using a small prybar

To install:
- Install the bearing to the steering knuckle, as follows:Bearing to the steering knuckle, using a press and tools 09950-60020 and 09527-17011, or equivalentNew snapring
- Install the new outside oil seal to steering knuckle, using a plastic hammer and tools 09223-15030 and 09527-17011. Coat the seal lip with MP grease.
- Install the axle hub to the steering knuckle, as follows:Dust cover to the steering knuckle. Torque the 4 bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).Axle hub to the steering knuckle, using a shop press and tool 09649-17010, or equivalent.
- Install or connect the following:Bearing spacer and Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor, if equipped with ABS

Bearing spacer, if not equipped with ABS, using a shop press and tools 09950-60010 and 09950-70010With 2wd, install a new locknut. Torque to 203 ft. lbs. (274 Nm). - Install the hub/steering knuckle assembly. With 4wd, install the halfshaft and install the nut loosely.
- Connect the knuckle to the upper arm. Torque the nut to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm). The nut can be tightened up to an additional 60 degrees to align the hole. Install a new cotter pin.
- Connect the lower ball joint. Torque the 4 bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
- Install the shock absorber.
- Install the rotor and caliper.
- Attach the brake line to the knuckle.
- Connect the speed sensor.
- With 4wd, apply the brakes and tighten the shaft nut to 173 ft. lbs. (235 Nm). The nut can be tightened up to an additional 60 degrees to align the hole. Install a new cotter pin.
- Install the grease cap.
- Install the wheel.
- Check the alignment.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
