how TO remove rear brake rotors ON 2006 cts cadillac?

ALL OTHER COMPONENTS LIKE BRAKE CALIPER,BRAKE PADS ALSO NEEDS TO BE REMOVED.THE PROCEDURE FOR THAT ALSO IS MENTIONED BELOW.


Brake Disc (Rotor)


Removal & Installation



  1. Check to be sure that the park brake is released.
  2. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
    NOTE
    Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak.

  5. Remove the brake caliper and the caliper mounting bracket as an assembly from the suspension knuckle and support the assembly with heavy mechanic's wire, or equivalent. Ensure that there is no tension on the hydraulic brake flexible hose.
  6. Matchmark the position of the brake rotor to the wheel studs.
  7. Remove the brake rotor mounting screw.

  8. Remove the brake rotor. Do not force the rotor off. If the rotor is difficult to remove, ease it off by gently rotating it as you pull outward.
  9. If the brake rotor cannot be removed perform the following:
    1. Assemble the slide hammer to the hook attachment.
    2. Insert the hook attachment between the rotor friction surfaces in the vent section of the rotor.
    3. Using slide hammer and hook attachment remove the rotor from the hub assembly.

  10. Inspect the park brake components for the following conditions:
    1. Bent or broken hold down spring.
    2. Broken, cracked or worn brake shoe lining.
    3. Bent or damaged brake shoe.
    4. Worn, bent or damaged backing plate.
    5. If any of these conditions are found replace the affected parts.


To install:

  1. Whenever the brake rotor has been separated from the hub/axle flange, any rust or contaminants should be cleaned from the hub/axle flange and the brake rotor mating surfaces. Failure to do this may result in excessive assembled lateral runout (LRO) of the brake rotor, which could lead to brake pulsation.
  2. Inspect and clean all mating surfaces.
  3. If installing a new brake rotor, adjust the clearance of the parking brake shoe to the drum-in-hat portion of the brake rotor.
  4. Install the brake rotor to the hub/axle flange. Use the matchmark made prior to removal for proper orientation to the flange.
  5. Install the brake rotor mounting screw. Tighten the brake rotor mounting screw to 124 inch lbs. (14 Nm).
  6. Install the brake caliper and the brake caliper bracket as an assembly to the suspension knuckle.
  7. Tighten the rear brake caliper bracket bolts to 88 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  8. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  9. With the engine OFF , gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2 / 3of its travel distance.
  10. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  11. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 9-10 until a firm brake pedal apply is obtained; this will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
  12. Check the fluid level in the master cylinder and fill as necessary.
  13. Road test the vehicle for proper brake operation.
  14. If the brake rotor was refinished or replaced, or if new brake pads were installed, burnish the pads and rotors.

(J55) Brake System
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Check to be sure that the park brake is released.
  3. Raise the vehicle.
  4. Remove the tire and wheel.
  5. Remove the brake caliper mounting bracket bolts.
  6. Remove the brake caliper and the caliper mounting bracket as an assembly from the suspension knuckle and support the assembly with heavy mechanic's wire, or equivalent. Ensure that there is no tension on the hydraulic brake flexible hose.
  7. Matchmark the position of the brake rotor to the wheel studs.
  8. Remove the brake rotor. Do not force the rotor off. If the rotor is difficult to remove, ease it off by gently rotating it as you pull outward.

  9. If the brake rotor cannot be removed perform the following:
    1. Assemble the slide hammer to the hook attachment.
    2. Insert the hook attachment between the rotor friction surfaces in the vent section of the rotor.
    3. Using slide hammer and hook attachment remove the rotor from the hub assembly.

  10. Inspect the park brake components for the following conditions:

To install:

  8. With the engine OFF , gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2 / 3of its travel distance.
  9. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  10. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 9-10 until a firm brake pedal apply is obtained; this will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
  11. Check the fluid level in the master cylinder and fill as necessary.
  12. Road test the vehicle for proper brake operation.
  13. If the brake rotor was refinished or replaced, or if new brake pads were installed, burnish the pads and rotors.

(JL9) Brake System
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
    NOTE
    Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak.

  4. Remove caliper mounting bracket bolts.
  5. Remove the brake caliper and the caliper mounting bracket as an assembly.
  6. Remove the brake rotor mounting screw.
  7. Remove the brake rotor.
  8. Clean all mating surfaces.

To install:

  1. Install the brake rotor.
  2. Install the brake rotor mounting bolt. Tighten bolt to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  3. Remove mechanic wire and lower brake caliper assembly into position.
  4. Tighten the caliper mounting bracket bolts to 94 ft. lbs. (128 Nm).
  5. Install tire and wheel assembly.
  6. With the engine OFF , gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2 / 3of its travel distance.
  7. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  8. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 9-10 until a firm brake pedal apply is obtained; this will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
  9. Check the fluid level in the master cylinder and fill as necessary.
  10. Road test the vehicle for proper brake operation.
  11. If the brake rotor was refinished or replaced, or if new brake pads were installed, burnish the pads and rotors.

Brake Calipers


Removal & Installation



(J55) Brake System
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Raise the vehicle.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel.
  4. Remove the brake hose from the brake caliper.
  5. Cap or plug the brake hose to prevent the brake system from becoming contaminated and fluid leakage.
  6. Remove guide pin bolts.
  7. Remove the brake caliper.

To install:

  1. Install the brake caliper.
  2. Install guide pin bolts and tighten to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm).
  3. Unplug the brake hose.
  4. Install the brake hose to the brake caliper. Install new gasket and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  5. Install the tire and wheel.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Refill the master cylinder and bleed the brake system.
  8. Road test the vehicle for proper brake system operation.

(Jl9) Brake System
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Raise the vehicle.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel.
  4. Remove the brake hose from the caliper.
  5. Cap or plug the brake hose to prevent the brake system from becoming contaminated and fluid leakage.
  6. Disconnect the park brake cable from the caliper.
  7. Remove guide pin bolts.
  8. Remove the brake caliper.

To install:

  1. Remove the brake caliper.
  2. Install guide pin bolts and tighten to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  3. Reconnect the park brake cable from the caliper.
  4. Unplug the brake hose.
  5. Install the brake hose to the caliper. Install new gasket and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  6. Install the tire and wheel.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Refill the master cylinder and bleed the brake system.
  9. Road test the vehicle for proper brake system operation.

CTS
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove 2 / 3 of the brake fluid from the master cylinder.
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4. Install 2 wheel nuts to keep the rotor in place.
  5. Using a large C-clamp against the inboard pad, compress the caliper piston into the caliper to provide clearance during removal.
  6. Place a catch pan under the caliper.
  7. Disconnect the brake hose from the caliper. Cap the line to prevent excessive fluid loss or contamination.
  8. Remove the caliper mounting bolts and remove the caliper from the vehicle.
  9. Inspect the mounting bolts; sleeves and boots for wear and/or damage. Replace parts as necessary.

To install:

  1. Before installing the caliper, make sure the piston is fully seated in the bore and the brake pads are properly seated.
  2. Lubricate the mounting bolt shafts and inner diameter of the sleeves with silicone grease.
  3. Install the caliper in the caliper mounting bracket and install the mounting bolts. Torque the mounting bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm).
  4. Connect the brake hose with the bolt and new gaskets. Torque the brake hose bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  5. Refill the master cylinder and bleed the brake system.
  6. Remove the 2 wheel nuts securing the rotor.
  7. Install the rear wheel.
  8. Road test the vehicle for proper brake system operation.

CTS-V
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. If the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, no brake fluid needs to be removed from the reservoir before proceeding.
  3. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
  4. Remove the front wheel.
  5. Carefully insert a plastic flat-bladed trim tool between the rotor and inboard brake pad.
  6. Carefully apply pressure to the inboard brake pad until both caliper inner pistons are compressed into the caliper piston bores.
  7. Carefully insert a plastic flat-bladed trim tool between the rotor and outboard brake pad.
  8. Carefully apply pressure to the outboard brake pad until both caliper outer pistons are compressed into the bores.
  9. Remove the brake hose and copper gaskets from the brake caliper. Cap the line to prevent excessive fluid loss or contamination.
  10. Remove the caliper-to-knuckle mounting bolts.
  11. Remove the brake caliper.

To install:

  1. Apply threadlocker to two-thirds of the threaded length of the caliper to knuckle mounting bolts.
  2. Apply a thin coat of high temperature silicone brake lubricant to the brake caliper pin.
  3. Install the brake caliper. Tighten the mounting bolts to 88 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  4. Connect the brake hose with the bolt and new gaskets. Tighten the bolt to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  5. Refill the master cylinder and bleed the brake system.
  6. Install the wheel.
  7. Road test the vehicle for proper brake system operation.

Brake Pads


Removal & Installation



CTS
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove 2 / 3 of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir.
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4. Remove the caliper mounting bolts.
  5. Remove the caliper from the steering knuckle without disconnecting the brake hose.
  6. Suspend the caliper from the coil spring with wire. Do not let the caliper hang from the brake hose.
  7. Remove brake pads from anchor bracket.

To install:

  1. Fully seat the caliper piston into the bore using a large C-clamp.
  2. Lubricate the brake caliper mounting surfaces.
  3. Install the brake pads onto the anchor bracket using new shims and clips.
  4. Place the caliper onto the anchor bracket and install the mounting bolts.
  5. Torque the mounting bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  6. Install the wheel and tire assembly and torque to specification.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
  9. Check the fluid level in the master cylinder and fill as necessary.
  10. Road test the vehicle for proper brake operation.

CTS-V
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. If the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, no brake fluid needs to be removed from the reservoir before proceeding.
  3. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
  4. Remove the front wheel.
  5. Holding the lower end of the retainer down and using a hammer and punch carefully tap the lower caliper guide pin inward out of the caliper.
  6. Rotate the brake pad retainer upward and remove the retainer.
  7. Using a hammer and punch tap the upper caliper to brake pad mounting pin inward out of the caliper.
  8. Carefully insert a plastic flat-bladed trim tool between the rotor and inboard brake pad.
  9. Carefully apply pressure to the inboard brake pad until both caliper inner pistons are fully compressed into the caliper piston bores.
  10. Carefully insert a plastic flat-bladed trim tool between the rotor and outboard brake pad.
  11. Carefully apply pressure to the outboard brake pad until both caliper outer pistons are fully compressed into the bores.
  12. Remove the brake pads from the caliper.

To install:

  1. Install the brake pads to the caliper.
  2. Install the upper caliper guide pin through the caliper, inner and outer brake pads.
  3. Using a hammer and punch seat the upper guide pin to the outer caliper half. Ensure that the caliper guide pin is seated into the outer caliper pin seat.
  4. Install the brake pad retainer under the upper caliper pin assembly.
  5. Rotate brake pad retainer down.
  6. Carefully apply pressure downward on the lower end of the brake pad retainer.
  7. Carefully install the lower caliper guide pin through the caliper, inner and outer brake pads.
  8. Using a hammer and punch seat the upper guide pin to the outer caliper half. Ensure that the caliper guide pin is seated into the outer caliper pin seat. Ensure that the brake pad retainer is centered retaining both brake pads.
  9. Install the front wheel.
  10. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
  11. Check the fluid level in the master cylinder and fill as necessary.
  12. Road test the vehicle for proper brake operation.

J55 Brake System
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
  3. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
  4. Raise the vehicle.
  5. Remove the tire and wheel.
  6. Remove the guide pin bolts.
  7. Rotate the brake caliper upward and secure with heavy mechanics wire or equivalent.
  8. Remove the spring clips. DO NOT use the old spring clip with new brake pads, replace with new.
  9. Fully seat the caliper piston into the bore using a large C-clamp.
  10. Remove the inboard and outboard brake pads.

To install:

  1. Install the new inboard and outboard brake pads.
  2. Install new spring clips.
  3. Remove mechanics wire and rotate the brake caliper into position
  4. Install the guide pin bolts. Tighten the bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm).
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. With the engine OFF , gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2 / 3of its travel distance.
  7. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  8. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 9-10 until a firm brake pedal apply is obtained; this will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
  9. Check the fluid level in the master cylinder and fill as necessary.
  10. Road test the vehicle for proper brake operation.

Jl9 Brake System
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
  3. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
  4. Raise the vehicle.
  5. Remove the tire and wheel.
  6. Remove the guide pin bolts.
  7. Remove the park brake cables from the retainers on the lower control arms.
  8. Remove the spring clips. DO NOT use the old spring clip with new brake pads, replace with new.
  9. Fully seat the caliper piston into the bore using a large C-clamp.
  10. Remove the inboard and outboard brake pads.

To install:


NOTE
When replacing the brakes pads, ensure that the wear indicators are on the inside pad on the bottom.

  1. Install the new inboard and outboard brake pads.
  2. Install new spring clips.
  3. Remove mechanics wire and install brake caliper into position
  4. Install the guide pin bolts. Tighten the bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  5. Install the park brake cables to the retainers on the lower control arms.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. With the engine OFF , gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2 / 3of its travel distance.
  8. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  9. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 9-10 until a firm brake pedal apply is obtained; this will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
  10. Check the fluid level in the master cylinder and fill as necessary.
