How to remove the power steering tilt motor on Toyota Landcruiser 100

  1. On models without tilt steering, proceed as follows:
    1. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
    2. Remove the two steering wheel lower covers. Using a Torx driver, loosen the Torx screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.
    3. Pull out the wheel pad from the steering wheel, then detach the air bag connector.

  2. Remove the steering wheel set nut. A special wheel puller may be needed. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and mainshaft assembly. Remove the wheel.
  3. Unplug the harness.

To install:

  1. Align the matchmarks on the wheel and the mainshaft. Tighten the wheel set nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  2. Attach the harness.
  3. Attach the air bag harness, then install the wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the Torx screw is caught on the screw case.
  4. Using a Torx driver, tighten the screws to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  5. Install the steering wheel covers.
  6. Check the steering wheel center point.

CAUTION
Work must not begin until at least 90 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative battery cable is disconnected from the battery. The SRS is equipped with a back-up power source so that if the work is started within the 90 seconds of disconnecting the negative terminal, the SRS may be deployed.

  1. On some models it will be necessary to remove the air cleaner.
  2. Disconnect the high tension lines at the distributor, then disconnect the air lines at the air valve.
  3. With a suitable device, suck some fluid out of the reservoir tank.
  4. Disconnect the return hose at the power steering pump.
  5. Separate the pressure line at the pump. Some models have a union bolt with gaskets. Discard the old gaskets.
  6. If equipped with a power steering pump belt, loosen the drive belt pulley retaining nut. Loosen the idler pulley and adjusting bolt and remove the drive belt.
  7. If equipped with a serpentine belt, loosen the tensioner to relieve belt tension, and then remove the belt.
  8. Remove the drive pulley and Woodruff key.
  9. Remove the power steering pump. Some models have an O-ring. Remove and discard the old O-ring.

To install:

  1. If equipped with an O-ring, coat the new O-ring with power steering fluid, then install it to the pump assembly.
  2. Install the pump in its bracket, and then tighten the nuts to 2729 ft. lbs. (3639 Nm).
  3. Install the drive pulley and belt. Tighten the pulley bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm) and check the drive belt tension.
  4. Attach the pressure line to the pump; tighten the flare nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm), and the union bolt with new gaskets to 42 ft. lbs. (56 Nm).
  5. Connect the return hose.
  6. Connect the air hoses and the high tension leads.
  7. If removed, install the air cleaner.
  8. Fill the reservoir with fluid, bleed the system and check for leaks.

BLEEDING




WARNING
Vehicles equipped with Rear Wheel Anti-Lock (RWAL) brakes use a different bleeding procedure than those not so equipped. Bleeding the RWAL system requires the use of an electronic brake tester, an expensive unit usually found only at dealers.

Without RWAL System
  1. Check the fluid level in the reservoir. It should be at the correct level (HOT or COLD) depending on engine temperature.
  2. Start the engine and run it below 1,000 rpm.
  3. Turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock 34 times.
  4. Shut the engine OFF . Connect a clear plastic tube to the bleeder port on the steering gearbox. Place the other end of the tube in a container of power steering fluid. Make sure the end is immersed in the fluid.
  5. Start the engine again. Turn the wheel lock-to-lock 34 times and return the steering wheel to the centered position.
  6. Loosen the bleeder plug. Observe the tubing; when no air bubbles are seen, close the bleeder plug.


CAUTION
Do NOT allow the tubing to come off the bleed port. The power steering fluid is under high pressure and may be very hot.

  1. Inspect the fluid level with the engine running; the fluid should not be foamy or cloudy. Shut the engine OFF and check the fluid level. If level rises too much, try re-bleeding the system. If the problem persists, repair the power steering system.

With RWAL System

The RWAL system uses power steering fluid pressure to maintain control pressures in the brake system. While the fluids NEVER mix, air in the power steering system can render the rear anti-lock brakes ineffective.

If the any of the lines or components in the power steering system are loosened or removed, the brake system must be bled as well. Preliminary bleeding of both the power steering and brake systems will eliminate most of the air, but the vehicle MUST be taken to a dealer to have the systems properly bled using the Toyota ABS Checker.


WARNING
Be warned that until this is done, the rear wheel anti-lock brake function may be impaired.

Power Steering Gear


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
T100
2WD MODELS
  1. Position the front wheels facing straight ahead.
  2. Secure the steering wheel so that it does not turn. The driver's seat belt can be used to secure the steering wheel.
  3. Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and control valve shaft. Remove the lower and upper joint bolts from the intermediate shaft. Disconnect the shaft.
  4. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the tie rod ends. Disconnect the tie rod ends using a separator tool.

  1. Disconnect the pressure and return pipes using flare nut wrenches.
  2. Remove the bracket bolts and grommets.
  3. Remove the steering rack assembly from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Install the gear housing then tighten the mounting bolts to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  2. Install the pressure and return tubes using new O-rings. Tighten the fittings to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  3. Connect the intermediate shaft. Install the lower and upper joint bolts. Tighten the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  4. Connect the tie rod ends, tighten to 67 ft. lbs. (90 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6. Fill and bleed the steering system.
  7. Check and adjust toe-in.

4WD MODELS
  1. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
  2. Drain the power steering fluid.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.


CAUTION
Work must NOT be started until after 90 seconds from the time the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative battery cable is disconnected from the battery. The SRS is equipped with a back-up power source so that if the work is started within the 90 seconds of disconnecting the negative terminal, the SRS may be deployed.

  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.

  1. Remove the pitman arm set nut and the spring washer. Using SST 0962862011 (or equivalent), disconnect the pitman arm from the gear assembly.
  2. Disconnect the pressure feed tube and return tube.
  3. Make matchmarks and disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
  4. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts and remove the gear assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the power steering gear assembly, and then tighten the bolts to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm).
  2. Align the matchmarks and connect the intermediate shaft to the steering gear.

If installing a new gear assembly, be sure the gear box and the steering wheel are centered.

  1. Connect the pressure feed tube and the return tube. Tighten the line fittings to 26 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
  2. Align the alignment marks on the cross shaft and the pitman arm and connect the pitman arm. Install the spring washer and the pitman arm set nut, then tighten to 130 ft. lbs. (177 Nm).
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4. Check the steering wheel center point.
  5. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Drain the power steering fluid.

  4. Remove the link joint protector.
  5. Remove the pitman arm set nut and spring washer. Using SST 09628-62011 (or equivalent), disconnect the pitman arm from the gear assembly.
  6. Using SST 09631-22020 (or equivalent), disconnect the pressure feed and the return tubes.
  7. Separate the sliding yoke sub-assembly from the steering gear.
  8. Remove the mounting bolts and the power steering gear assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the power steering gear assembly, and then tighten the bolts to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm).
  2. Connect the sliding yoke subassembly to the steering gear.
  3. Connect the pressure feed and the return tubes. Tighten the tube fittings to 26 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
  4. Connect the pitman arm and align the alignment marks on the cross shaft and the pitman arm. Install the spring washer and the pitman arm set nut. Tighten the nut to 130 ft. lbs. (177 Nm).
  5. Refill and bleed the power steering system.
  6. Install the link joint protector.
  7. Install the frame seal.
  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10. Test drive the vehicle. Check the steering wheel center point.
