How to replace timing belt on Mazda tribute?

Timing Belt, Cover & Seal


Removal & Installation



2.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  4. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe.
  5. Remove the spark plugs.
  6. Disconnect the throttle cables. If equipped, disconnect the speed control actuator cable. Disconnect the accelerator cable.
  7. Disconnect the catalyst monitor and heated oxygen sensor electrical connectors.
  8. Detach the electrical connectors from the bracket.
  9. Remove the wiring harness anchors from the valve cover studs and position the wiring harness aside.
  10. Remove the valve cover.
    WARNING
    The valve cover sealing surfaces are soft materials. Do not use abrasive grinding discs to remove gasket material. Use only a plastic scraping tool. Do not scratch or gouge sealing surfaces or oil leaks can occur.

  11. Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces of the valve cover and cylinder head. Both surfaces must be clean and flat.
  12. Remove the heated oxygen sensor (HO 2 S).
  13. Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube.

    Remove the two bolts.
    Loosen the EGR tube nut.

  14. Remove the catalytic converter nuts. Discard the nuts.
  15. Remove the catalyst monitor sensor.
  16. Remove the bolts and the catalytic converter bracket.
  17. Remove the flagnuts and bolts. Discard the flagnuts, springs and bolts.
  18. Remove the catalytic converter bracket nuts.
  19. Remove the catalytic converter and rear support bracket. Discard the ring seal and gasket.
  20. Remove the bolt and nut and position the coolant tube aside.
  21. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  22. Remove the right lower splash shield.

  23. Rotate the crankshaft to just before top dead center (TDC) (No. 1 cylinder). Remove the stud. Install special tool 303-574.
    NOTE
    Make sure the correct (second) notch in the pulley is indexed to the lower cylinder block.

  24. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise against the peg to bring it to TDC (No. 1 cylinder).
  25. Loosen the coolant pump pulley bolts.
  26. Loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt.
  27. Rotate the tensioner and remove the accessory drive belt.
  28. Remove the bolt and the crankshaft pulley.
  29. Remove the bolts and the lower timing belt cover.

  30. Install special tool 303-F072 to support the engine.
  31. Detach the ground strap.
  32. Remove the nuts, the bolt and the engine mount upper bracket.
  33. Remove the studs.
  34. Detach the knock sensor electrical connector from the upper timing cover.
  35. Remove the bolts and the upper timing cover.
  36. Remove the coolant pump pulley.
  37. Remove the accessory drive belt idler pulley.
  38. Remove the bolts and the engine mount lower bracket.
  39. Relieve the tension on the timing belt tensioner pulley.

    Loosen the tensioner pulley bolt.
    Release the tension on the timing belt by disconnecting the tensioner tab from the timing cover back plate.

  40. Remove the timing belt. Slide the timing belt off the camshaft sprockets and the crankshaft sprocket.
  41. Inspect the timing belt for wear. Install a new timing belt if required.

To install:


WARNING
The camshaft must be held stationary at the hexagons with locking pliers. Do not use the alignment tool to hold the camshaft in position or damage to the camshaft may occur.


NOTE
To loosen the camshaft pulleys, hold the camshafts by the hexagon.

  1. Remove the blanking plug from the exhaust camshaft pulley.
  2. Loosen the exhaust camshaft pulley bolt.
  3. Loosen the intake camshaft pulley bolt.
    NOTE
    Rotate the camshafts clockwise as necessary.

  4. Install the camshaft alignment timing tool on the back of the camshafts.
    NOTE
    Cylinder No. 1 is at top dead center (TDC) when the keyway is in the 12 o'clock position.

  5. Confirm the crankshaft position is at TDC (No. 1 cylinder) by rotating it clockwise against the alignment peg.
    WARNING
    Do not rotate the crankshaft; as necessary check that it is still resting against the timing pin.


    NOTE
    The lug of the belt tensioner should not be hooked in the sheet metal cover during timing belt installation.

  6. Position a new timing belt in place. Starting from the crankshaft timing belt pulley and working counterclockwise, position the timing belt in place while keeping it under tension.
    NOTE
    Incorrect timing belt tension will cause incorrect valve timing.

  7. Pre-tension the timing belt.
    1. Rotate the tensioner locating tab counterclockwise and insert the locating tab into the slot in the rear timing cover.
    2. Position the hex key slot in the tensioner adjusting washer to the 4 o'clock position.
    3. Tighten the attaching bolt enough to seat the tensioner firmly against the rear timing cover, but still allow the tensioner adjusting washer to be rotated using a 6 mm hex key.
      WARNING
      Tension the timing belt, working counterclockwise.

  8. Using the hex key, rotate the adjusting washer counterclockwise until the notch in the pointer is centered over the index line on the locating tab (the pointer will move clockwise during adjustment).
  9. While holding the adjusting washer in position, tighten the bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
    WARNING
    The camshaft must be held stationary at the hexagons with locking pliers. Do not use the alignment tool to hold the camshaft in position or damage to the camshaft may occur.

  10. Tighten the bolt on the intake camshaft sprocket to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.).
    WARNING
    The camshaft must be held stationary at the hexagons with locking pliers. Do not use the alignment tool to hold the camshaft in position or damage to the camshaft may occur.

  11. Tighten the bolt on the exhaust camshaft sprocket in three stages.
    NOTE
    Install a new oil plug seal.



    Stage 1: Tighten the bolt to 50 Nm (36 ft. lbs.).
    Stage 2: Remove the TDC peg and the camshaft alignment timing tool.
    Stage 3: Tighten the bolt to 115-125 Nm (85-92 ft. lbs.).

  12. Screw in the new oil plug on the variable camshaft timing assembly. Torque to 37 Nm (27 ft. lbs.).
    NOTE
    Turn the engine two turns in the normal direction of rotation by the crankshaft.

  13. Check the valve timing by inserting the special tools and correct the alignment as necessary.
    1. Screw in special tool 303-574 and make sure that the crankshaft is resting against the special tool.
    2. Insert special tool 303-465 into the camshafts. If necessary loosen the timing pulleys and correct the camshaft alignment.
    3. Remove the special tools.

  14. Install the front engine mount lower bracket. Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
  15. Install the accessory drive belt idler pulley. Torque to 45 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
  16. Install the coolant pump pulley. Hand-tighten the bolts.
  17. Position the upper timing belt cover and install the bolts. Torque to 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.).
  18. Install the studs. Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).
  19. Connect the knock sensor electrical connector to the upper timing belt cover.
  20. Install the engine mount upper bracket, the nuts and the bolt. Torque the upper nuts to 98 Nm (72 ft. lbs.); the lower bolt to 77 Nm (57 ft. lbs.).
  21. Attach the ground strap and install the nut. Torque the nut to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).
  22. Position the lower timing belt cover and install the bolts. Torque to 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.).
  23. Position the crankshaft pulley and install the bolt. Hand-tighten the bolt.
  24. Rotate the tensioner and install the accessory drive belt.
  25. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt. Torque to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.).
  26. Tighten the coolant pump pulley bolts to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
  27. Position the right lower splash shield and install the bolts.
  28. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  29. Install the stud. Torque to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
  30. Install the coolant tube. Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
  31. Position the catalytic converter into place and loosely install the two nuts. Install a new gasket and ring seal. Install new nuts.
  32. Connect the converter outlet to the muffler inlet pipe. Position the rear support bracket and install the washers and nuts. Loosely install the new bolts, springs and flagnuts.
  33. Lower the vehicle.
  34. Install the third catalytic converter nut and tighten all the nuts. Install a new nut. Torque to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
  35. Connect the EGR tube and install the bracket bolts. Torque the lower end to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.); the upper end to 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.).
  36. Raise the vehicle.
  37. Tighten the converter outlet to the muffler inlet bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
  38. Tighten the catalytic converter rear support bracket nuts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
  39. Install the catalytic converter bracket and bolts. Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
  40. Install the catalyst monitor sensor. Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
  41. Install the HO 2 S. Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
  42. Inspect the valve cover gasket. Install a new gasket, if necessary.
  43. Position the valve cover. Install the studbolts. Install the bolts. Torque to 9 Nm ) 80 inch lbs.).
  44. Connect the wiring harness anchors to the valve cover studs.
  45. Attach the catalyst monitor and heated oxygen sensor electrical connectors to the bracket.
  46. Connect the electrical connectors.
  47. Connect the accelerator cable. If equipped, connect the speed control actuator cable.
  48. Install the spark plugs.
  49. Install the air cleaner outlet pipe.
  50. Connect the battery ground cable.
