  1. Tighten the adjusting nut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm) while rotating the hub to seat the bearings.
  2. Loosen the adjusting nut.
  3. Tighten the adjusting nut to 48 inch lbs. (5.4 Nm) and check that the bearing has no play.
  4. Check the bearing preload with a spring tension gauge. The preload should be 6.4-12.6 lbs. (28-56 N) for 2001-03; 9.5-15 lbs. (42-67 N)


  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lockwasher
    Locknut. Tighten the nut to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm). Recheck the preload.
    Hub drive flange. Tighten the nuts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm) for 2001-03; 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm) for 2004 and above.
    Snapring. Pull out on the axle shaft and select a snapring that ensures that the clearance between the tip of the flange and the snapring is less than 0.008 inch (0.2mm).
    Grease cap
    Brake caliper
    Front wheel

    Locknut

    Hub drive flange. Tighten the nuts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    Snapring
    Grease cap
    Brake caliper
    Front wheel

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
    Grease cap
    With 4wd, cotter pin, lock cap and halfshaft nut
    Speed sensor wire from the knuckle
    Caliper and rotor. Support the caliper out of the way.
    Lower ball joint
    Axle hub/steering knuckle assembly and place it in a vise
    With 2wd, the grease cap
    Inner grease seal, for 4WD

  3. Remove the 4 bolts and shift the dust cover towards the hub side.
  4. Using a suitable puller, remove the hub from the knuckle.
  5. Remove the dust cover from the steering knuckle.
  6. With 4wd, remove the bearing spacer and Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor, if equipped with ABS


WARNING
Be careful not to scratch the speed sensor rotor serrations.

  1. Remove the outside oil seal from steering knuckle, using a small prybar
  2. Remove the bearing from the steering knuckle, as follows:

    Snapring
    Bearing from the steering knuckle, using tools 09950-60020 and 09950-70010, or equivalent.


To install:

  1. Install the bearing to the steering knuckle, as follows:

    Bearing to the steering knuckle, using a press and tools 09950-60020 and 09527-17011, or equivalent
    New snapring

  2. Install the new outside oil seal to steering knuckle, using a plastic hammer and tools 09223-15030 and 09527-17011. Coat the seal lip with MP grease.
  3. Install the axle hub to the steering knuckle, as follows:

    Dust cover to the steering knuckle. Torque the 4 bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
    Axle hub to the steering knuckle, using a shop press and tool 09649-17010, or equivalent.

  4. Install or connect the following:

    Bearing spacer and Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor, if equipped with ABS



WARNING
Be careful not to scratch the speed sensor rotor serrations.



Bearing spacer, if not equipped with ABS, using a shop press and tools 09950-60010 and 09950-70010
With 2wd, install a new locknut. Torque to 203 ft. lbs. (274 Nm). Stake the nut.
With 4wd, the bearing spacer using a press
Grease cap, for 2WD
Inner grease seal, for 4WD, using a plastic hammer and tool 09527-17011

  1. Install the hub/steering knuckle assembly. With 4wd, install the halfshaft and install the nut loosely.
  2. Connect the knuckle to the upper arm. Torque the nut to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm). The nut can be tightened up to an additional 60 degrees to align the hole. Install a new cotter pin.
  3. Connect the lower ball joint. Torque the 4 bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  4. Install the shock absorber.
  5. Install the rotor and caliper.
  6. Attach the brake line to the knuckle.
  7. Connect the speed sensor.
  8. With 4wd, apply the brakes and tighten the shaft nut to 173 ft. lbs. (235 Nm). The nut can be tightened up to an additional 60 degrees to align the hole. Install a new cotter pin.
  9. Install the grease cap.
  10. Install the wheel.
  11. Check the alignment.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
    Axle hub/steering knuckle assembly and place it in a vise
    Grease cap, for 2WD
    Inner grease seal, for 4WD

  3. Remove the axle hub from the steering knuckle
    WARNING
    Be careful not to scratch the speed sensor rotor serrations.



    4 bolts and shift the dust cover towards the outside (hub side)
    Axle hub from the steering knuckle, using tools 09710-30021 and 09950-40011
    Dust cover from the steering knuckle
    Bearing spacer and Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor, if equipped with ABS
    Spacer, if not equipped with ABS

  4. Remove the outside oil seal from steering knuckle, using a small prybar
  5. Remove the bearing from the steering knuckle, as follows:

    Snapring
    Bearing from the steering knuckle, using tools 09950-60020 and 09950-70010


To install:

  1. Install the bearing to the steering knuckle, as follows:

    Bearing to the steering knuckle, using tools 09950-60020 and 09527-17011
    Snapring

  2. Install the new outside oil seal to steering knuckle, using a plastic hammer and tools 09223-15030 and 09527-17011
  3. Install the axle hub to the steering knuckle, as follows:

    Dust cover to the steering knuckle. Torque the 4 bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
    Axle hub to the steering knuckle, using a shop press and tool 09649-17010

  4. Install or connect the following:

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
    Grease cap
    With 4wd, cotter pin, lock cap and halfshaft nut

    Grease cap, for 2WD
    Inner grease seal, for 4WD, using a plastic hammer and tool 09527-17011

  5. Install the hub/steering knuckle assembly. With 4wd, install the halfshaft and install the nut loosely.
  6. Connect the knuckle to the upper arm. Torque the nut to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm). The nut can be tightened up to an additional 60 degrees to align the hole. Install a new cotter pin.
  7. Connect the lower ball joint. Torque the 4 bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  8. Install the shock absorber.
  9. Install the rotor and caliper.
  10. Attach the brake line to the knuckle.
  11. Connect the speed sensor.
  12. With 4wd, apply the brakes and tighten the shaft nut to 173 ft. lbs. (235 Nm). The nut can be tightened up to an additional 60 degrees to align the hole. Install a new cotter pin.
  13. Install the grease cap.
  14. Install the wheel.
  15. Check the alignment.
