how to relace turn signal switch on a 1996 oldsmobile cutlass supreme?

The turn-signal unit on a 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme is part of the multifunction switch located inside the steering column. The turn-signal stalk is part of this assembly as well.
  • Pry the clamshell trim cover off the top of the steering column with your trim tool. The clamshell sits just in front of the steering wheel and covers the top of the steering column.

  • Remove the retaining screw from the base of the turn signal switch with your Phillips screwdriver. Set the screw aside within easy reach.

  • Disconnect the switch from the wiring harness manually. Lift the switch assembly out of the steering column.

  • Insert the new switch assembly and reinstall the retaining screw with your Phillips screwdriver. Plug the wiring harness into the switch manually.

  • --------------------
You have to pull the steering wheel...which means you have to disable the air bag, which means you should take it in. However, check all your bulbs first to make sure none are burnt out. Double bulbs in the rear lights need BOTH be working. Also, your turn signal flasher is located under the dash just beside your brake pedal (under the felt cowl, not the hazard flasher by the e-brake). Replace it if need be first. You can pop the little plastic face plate off your steering column by pushing the tab in front of the signal/cruise/wiper stem and get access to clean the turn signal contacts with canned air or a tiny (interdental) brush. This may clear up your problem in some cases of dirty contacts.
